This invention relates to fruit'and vegetable graters, and the prlnclpal ob ect of the same is to provide a. str ctly samtary grater in which the grating operation is performed in a closed casing, so. that foreign material can not obtain access thereto, and 1n -Wl110ll the operating parts are shielded so that there is no danger of injury being done to the operator incidental to the operating of the ill) machine.
Another object of the invention is the' construction of a. grater which is peculiarly reinforced, or braced to prevent sagging, or
twisting out of shape, of .the base structure of the same, whereby a very durable and efiicient machine 1s produced. I
. This application discloses certain new and useful improvements made to my machine as disclosed in my prior United States Patent No. 977,872, patented Dec. 6, 1910.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrange ments-of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appendedclaims. v

The body of said casing is substantially cylindrical and is open at its top. The-shaft 2O terminates. in a crank handle 26, which is equipped with a grip 27 by means of which the grating cylinder may be manually operated. Said shaft21 also carries a pulley 28, by means of which the shaft may be placed incbelted communication with a motor for operating thecylinder, when necessaryor desirable.
To efficiently fasten my grater to table 29, I preferably employ four screws 30, extending through the curved side 2 and base 1 into the table, as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 5. To prevent these screws 30 from havinga tearing action on the metal through which they pass, I provide for each, a primar-y sleeve 31 enclosing and slidably mounted upon an auxiliary sleeve. 32 (Finn. 5). Each .of the sleeves 31. and 32 exten into apertures of the base and sides, so that the apertures are reinforced, with no out or raw edge exposed, hence their tearlng pos sibilities are greatly decreased. .mary sleeve is provided with a flat collar 33 thatrests flat upon the top face of the curved V side, which further increases the durability and efiicieno of my grater by giving a good bearing sur ace for the head of the screw.

and 5. Now, the screw-structures not only efliciently fasten my grater to a support, such as table 29, but they also brace the whole apparatus against sagging or twisting or undue bending, which 1s very desirable, be-
cause practically a rigid and durable structhe grating cylinder securely in place withy in said casing. Another feature of my apparatus is the employment of removable end caps, held by any suitable fastening means upon the grating cylinder, whlch can be readily removed to give access to the interior of said cylinder.
. l Vhile I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention and illustrated the same'in the accompanying drawings, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates during the extensive manufacture of the same, and I, therefore, reserve the right to make such changes or alterations as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combinationof a casing provided with ends, said ends provided with shaft receiving slots, a cylinder wit-h shafts seated in said slots, end latches on the ends of said casing and normally straddling said shafts and entirely closing said receiving slots, and a cover for said casing normally closing over and bearing upon said end latches forholding them in a lockedposition.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a. casing-provided with substantially V-shaped slots having bearings formed at their inner ends, a cylinder provided with shafts extending from its ends, said shafts journalled in the bearings of said V-shaped slots, large flat end latches pivotally secured to the ends of said casing and straddling said shafts and'entirely closing said V-shaped slots and extending to the top edge of said casing, and a cover for said casing provided with end flanges bearing against the sides of said end latches and the cover bearing upon tlie-"top of said end latches whereby the latches and shafts are held in position against displacement off said cylinder.
