UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY BAUMGARTEL, OF STURGIS, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN FILE-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,731, dated September 14, 1875; application filed March 6,1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BAUMGARTEL, of Sturgis, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in File-Holders, of which the following is a specification My invention has for its object to provide a device for clamping a triangular file of any length between a pair of handles, one at each end, whereby the file may be held steady and true, and used with less fatigue than a file Without a handle at the point.
The invention consists in an extensible metallic frame, in two parts, secured together by a clamp-screw, the one being provided with a socket to receive the tang of the file, and the other with a socket for the point of the file, each also having secured to it a wooden handle of suitable form and size.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device, as attached to a triangular file. Fig. 2 is a cross-section at as m. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the front half of the device, looking at it from the left side, showing the triangular socket for the point of the file.
In the drawing, A A represent an archshaped casting in two parts, which overlap each other atthe inner ends, which are slot-ted to receive a transverse bolt, B, having a flat or square shank next the head, to prevent it from turning in the slot; also, outside the laps it receives a thumb-nut, B by means of which the parts are clamped together. The front part has a socket, a, triangular in cross-section, to receive the point of a saw-file, 0, in line with a socket in the other part, which receives the tang of the file. The file-holder is adjustable, so as to receive files of varying lengths, and to compel the sockets to remain in line in adjusting the parts. These latter are tongued and grooved togetherthat is to say, one has a pair of parallel ribs on its inner face sliding into corresponding grooves on the face of the other. D D are wooden handles, which are secured to the parts of the fileholder, the front one being the smaller, as it is usually grasped by the thumb and forefinger of one hand, to steady and direct the course of the file, and also to exert a downward pressure thereon. The device in question is more especially designed for holding saw-files, for which reason the triangular socket on in the front part is made apex down, to present acorner of the file to the edge of the saw-blade.
I do not pretend to have been the first to invent a file-holder, whereby files of different lengths can be used, or providing such a fileholder with handles; but- What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described file-holder, consisting of the parts A A, adjustably secured together by the bolt and nut B B, and having the ribs and grooves described, each part provided with a socket to receive an end of the file, and a handle, all constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
HENRY BAUMGARTEL.
