This invention relates to an improved oven door of the type which consists of two pressed steel plates or panels" secured together, with hinge members secured within the corners thereof, and formed with projecting hinge elements.
The general object of the invention is to provide, in a device of this type, a simple and practical construction, wherein the several parts of the door are securely held together without any screws, bolts or other fastening devices being visible from outside the door, except those which secure the handle, so that the face of the door may be made in any desired design, and will present a smooth and attractive appearance. In the present embodiment of the invention, the
hinge members are bolted or otherwise effec-v tively secured to the inside plate or lining of the door, and the front plate or panel is provided with a rearward flange having an inturned lip, forming a channel in which the hinge members and adjacent edge of the lining are tightly held.
The detailed construction of the invention will be more particularly explained in connection with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the same in its preferred form.

The invention, as herein described, is adapted to be used on a gas range 10, and comprises an outer steel plate 11, which may be pressed to present any desired design, and aninner plate or lining 12. .Within the lower corners of the door, hinge members 13 are secured to the inner face of the lining 12 by screws 14 or the like. The blocks 13 are formed with arcuate hinge elements 15 adapted to project through openings 12 formed in the lining l2 and on which the dooris adapted to swing in a well known manner, one of said arcuate members 15 being provided with an aperture 15, at its terminal, for connection with a suitable coiled spring (not shown) to cause the automatic closing of the door, while the other member 15 is provided with a lug 15 to form a stop for the door and hold the same in a horizontal position when open. The outer plate 11 is formed on three sides with a flange 16, within which'fits a flange 17 formed on the corresponding three sides of the lining12. The fourth or lower side of the plate 11 is formed with a flange 18, having an inturned lip 19, which fits tightly over the offset lower portion 20 of the lining 12. The ends ofthe flange 18 are spaced from the ends of the flange 16, where the latter curve around the lower corners, to form openings 21, through which project lugs 22 formed integrally with the hinge members 13 and serving, in addition to the aforesaid screws 14, to form a more rigid seat for the hinge member between the front and back plates of the door. Between the hinge members 13, the lining 12 is provided with a flange 23, which fits tightly in the bottom of the channel formed between the lip 19 and the main portion of the front plate 11, and
also bears against the flange 18 of the plate 11, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawmgs.
l/Vhen the door is assembled, the hinge blocks 13 are placed within the peripheral flanges of the front plate 12 with the lugs 22 projecting through the opening 21. The lining 12 is then placed in position with its lower offset portion 20 beneath the lip19, andthe hinge members are secured to the lining by the screws 14. The lining and the hinge members form a tight fit beneath the lip 19, and the hinge members are provided with angularly disposed arms 13 which extend diagonally across the upper end portions of the door to points adjacent to the top flanges 16 and 17, and are there provided withapertures to aline with holes 24 formed in the upper portion of the lining 12 for receiving bolts 25, which secure the handle 26 to the front plate 11, and the latter. to the lining 12. The nuts of the bolts 25 are held from turning by depressed seats 2 1 in the lining 12. Thus, the parts of the door are securely held in assembled relation without any bolts or other fastening devices showing on the front face of the door, and the hinge members are materially strengthened, and their connection with the door rendered more rigid, by reason of their elongated arms 13 extending diagonally across the end portions of the door and having connection with the handle fasteners 25.
In the form shown in Figure 7, the hinge block 27 is formed with an outwardly projecting hinge trunnion 28, which is formed integrally with the block and extends outwardly at the lower corner of the door, in substantially horizontal alinement with the lower edge of the latter, there being one at each side. In this construction, the flanges l6 and 19 are provided with openings 29 and the lining 12 is, of course, cut away, as shown at 30, to provide an opening through which the trunnion 28 projects, and the flanges 16 and 20 are likewise suitably formed for the purpose.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be adapted to doors of various designs other than those illustrated, either on gas or coal ranges. It is also to be understood that various modifications may be made in the construction of various parts of the door without any material departure from the salient features of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is 1. 4. In an oven door, the combination of an outer plate and an inner plate with a space therebetween, hinge blocks disposed in said space and secured at their lower ends to the inner plate only, means formed on one edge portion of the outer plate and invisible from outside the door for receiving and retaining the corresponding edge of the inner plate and the adjacent edge portions of the hinge blocks, and means for securing the opposite edge portion'of the inner plate and the upper ends of the blocks to the outer plate.
5. In an .oven door, the combination of a front plate and a back plate having interfitting marginal flanges to provide a space therebetween, hinge blocks located in said space at the bot-tom of the door and adjacent to each end of the same, said blocks being secured to said back plate, the lower flange of the front platehaving an inturned lip to blocks to project therethrough.
6. In an oven door, an inner plate having flanges extending at right angles to the plane of the plate on its top, bottom and side edges, an outer plate having flanges extending at right angles to the plane of the plate on its top and side edges to receive the top and side flanges of the inner plate and having at its bottom a Ll-shaped channel portion to 'receive and fit over the bottom flange of said inner plate, hinge blocks in the space between said plates, said inner plate and said outer plate having openings in their flanges,

and said hinge blocks having elements prosaid outer plate may be removed without disturbingsaid inner plate and hinge blocks.
7. In an oven door, an outer plate having its edges extended over at right angles .to constitute flanges at four sides andhaving the bottom flange interrupted at the sides to constitute openings and having that portion between the openings provided with a lip ex tending back parallel to the body of the plate, thereby constituting a substantially U -shaped channel portion, an .inner plate having its top, side and bottom edges extended at right angles to constitute flanges to fit Within the flanges and channel of said outer'plate, said inner plate being inwardly offset along its lower edge to receive the lip of said U -shaped channel member whereby said lip will lie flush with the outer face of said inner plate, and hinge elements located between said plates and having portions projected through openings in said flanges, and means securing said plates together at the top whereby said outer plate may be removed from said inner plate substantially as specified.

9. In an'oven door, an outer plate having right angled flanges on all four sides, the flange along one side having an inturned lip thereby constituting a channel along that side, an inner plate also having a right angled flange on all four sides to fit within the flanges and channel of said outer plate, hinge elements located within the space between said plates, means located adjacent the edge of said plate opposite the channel for detachably holding said plates together, all being arranged whereby upon releasing said detachable holding means said plates may be swung apart with the channel as a fulcrum and then the inner plate lifted out of said channel to complete separation of the plates, said inner plate along that side which cooperates with the channel being inwardly offset to receive said lip whereby said lip will lie flush with the exposed face of said inner plate.
