This invention relates to improvements in gas stove construction, and more particularly to means for safe guarding the several valves against accidental or unintentional opening, and at the same time providing a closure for the front portion of the gas stove which houses the manifold, gas valves and the gas and air mixers.
The object of the invention therefore, is two-fold. in that while serving as a safety appliance the device also serves the func tion of concealing the otherwise unsightly valve mechanism and its associated parts,
- usually found in ordinary gas stoves and ranges. v
I am fully acquainted with safety devices as disclosed by the prior art, but to my knowledge, none of them serves the double function of concealing the valves, manifold, etc. and simultaneously locking the valves against operation, or access to them.
Further, the device is of extreme simplicity and serves to enhance the appearance of the gas stove or range to which it is applied, it being one of the principal objects of gas stove manufacturers at this time to construct stoves and ranges in such manner that all possible operating parts are concealed from view, since a stove having a neat appearance as well as utility is desired in the modern kitchen.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the upper front portion of a gas stove or range embodying my improved form of combined safety device and closure; Figure 2 is a rearperspective view of the closure having the safety device attached thereto, and Y Figure 3 is a top perspective view, partly in section, of a stove embodying my improvement.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings by numerals reference, 1 indicates generally the body of the stove, and 2 a hinged cover which may be moved downwardly to cover the burners, grate and the valves, etc. thereby concealing the several parts from view when looking down upon the stove.
The frame of the stove indicated enerally at 3 is of rectangular form an in detail, comprises a top supporting ledge 4 and a vertical stop flange 5 which serves as an abutment for the door or closure shown 5 generally at 6.
Specifically, the door, which is rectangular in outline, is formed of two opposed plates 7 and Shaving complemental opposed flanged portions 9 and 10, the plates'being o0 maintained in spaced relation by a'. flanged plate 11, suitably secured.
The gas manifold 12, carrying the valves 13, controlled by handles 14 is supported in the usual manner in the chamber 15 as in 5 the ordinary stove construction, the usual mixing valve is shown at 16. A I
Supported upon the rear plate 7 of the door or closure 6, is a horizontal guard flan e 17, the rear edge of which is slightly roun ed or upwardly beveled as at 18 so that, when the door is moved from the dotted line position to the full line position shown in Figure 1, any valves which are not fully closed will be engaged by the said beveled 7 edge of the flange 17 and be moved to the fully closed position shown more clearly in Figure 3. When the door is fully closed, with the guard flange resting over and upon the several valve handles 14 it will be impossible to to them.
The door. is provided upon the rear plate 7, and adjacent each end thereof, with an operate said valves or have access arcuate arm 19, terminating at its lowerss end in an integral, forwardly extending arm 20. The front end of each arm 20 is pro vided with an opening adapted to receive a hinge pin 21 whereby the door as an entirety may be hinged to the side plates 26 of the stove.
For the purpose of maintaining the door in closed position, I provide a coil tension spring 22, the upper end of which is secured to the arm 20 adjacent its junction with the mitted to be swung outwardly and entirely on, or can-:-
free of the stove frame member 24 at its lower portion.
It is to be noted that the intermediate frame member 24. is of T-form and that the spacing flange 25 between the compartments 15 and oven compartment 26 is extremely thin, and of such width that the door 6, as well as the oven door 27 are substantially flush with the outer edges thereof, as well as the corresponding parts of the main or body frame 3.
By providing such a construction a much neater appearance is given the stove front. lhe door 6 is also provided with an operating handle 28 suitably secured to the door.
The valve compartment 15 is separated from the oven compartment 26 through the medium of a pair of spaced plates 29, suitably secured to the frame members of the stove.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A safety device for gas stoves and ranges comprising, a gas stove having a compartment open at its forward end and containing the gas valves, a frame for and defining said opening, a door or closure pivotally mounted on said frame and adapted to swing outwardly, a guard secured to the inner face of said door and adapted to be disposed over the handles of said valves when said door is in closed position.
2. A. gas stove or range having a compartment open at its forward portion, and adapted to house the manifold and gas valves, a door frame for said opening, a door or closure for the opening of said compartment pivotally mounted upon the door frame, a guard mounted upon the rear face of said door and adapted when said door is closed to engage the handles of all of the valves simultaneously and thereby prevent their operations.
3. A safety device for gas stoves and ranges, comprising in combination with a stove having an upper compartment open at its front end and having therein a plurality of gas valves provided with operating handles, a frame for and defining said front opening, a door hinged to said door frame and adapted to cover and uncover the opening of said compartment, and'a guard plate secured upon the rear face of said door and provided with a beveled valve handle engaging edge.
4:. Asafety device for gas stoves comprising in combination with a stove having a forward open valve compartment, a frame surrounding said opening provided with outwardly extending flanges, a closure for said compartment adapted to swing outwardly to uncover said opening, and which when closed will have its outer face subflanges of said frame, and a valve guard mounted upon the inner face of said door.
5. A gas stove comprising a valve containing compartment having afront opening, a frame for said opening, a door hinged to said frame along its lower portion adapted to cover and uncover said opening and a valve guard mounted upon the inner face of said door.
6. A gas stove comprising a valxe containing compartment having a front opening, a door adapted to cover and uncover said opening, a valve uard mounted upon the inner face of said oor, an inwardly extending arcuate arm rigid with said door, and means for hingedly connecting the in ner end of said arm with a fixed part of the stove.
7 A gas stove such as set forth in claim 6, and spring means connected respectively with the arcuate arm, and a fixed part of the stove for normally holding the door in closed position.
8. A gas stove safety device, comprising a compartment which has an opening at its forward portion to expose the valve handles and provided with a front door frame, a door pivotally mounted upon said frame and adapted to swing outwardly, and a valve guard mounted upon the inner face of said door.
