Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,700, dated September 14, 1875; application filed June 12, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW SHIELS, of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and- State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Loung'e, of which the following is a specification r The invention relates to certain improvements in lounges; and consists in the combination, with the hinged bottom boards, of devices which enable the patient to adjust himself either from a recumbent to a sitting posture, or vice versa, without assistance.

The middle portion A of the bottom of the lounge is stationary. The portion B between it and the head is made in one piece and hinged to it. The portion 0, between A and the foot, is made in two pieces, which are hinged together, and the upper one is hinged to the piece A. D is a crank, under B, for raising it by the lever-handle E. Fis a crank, under part 0, for raising it by the arms G and lever H. I represents ratchet-bars, to hold the cranks in different positions. J represents legs, hinged to the under side of part B of the bottom, for holding it in a more upright position than the crank will, to support the patient in a sitting position. K is a book-rack, mounted on the swinging arm L, over the lower portion of the lounge, for the convenience of the occupant when supported in a sitting position by the back-rest B. The arm L is pro vided with a ratchet-bar, M, for holding it any required distance from the sitter.
The levers H andE are arranged so that the occupant of the lounge can adjust the bottom while lying on it. i
The apparatus is simple, can be easily operated, and iscalculated to afford a very useful lounge for invalids and others.
I am aware of the fact that lounges for invalids have been constructed with the backrest and foot portion hinged, in a manner similar to mine; and I therefore limit my invention to the particular devices for enabling the patient to adjust his lounge to suit himself, and without assistance.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.. The combination, with the hinge portion B, and the hinged legs J, of the crank D, lever-handle E, and ratchet-bar I, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the double-hinged I portion 0, of the crank F G, ratchet-bar I, 1ever-handle H, and connecting-rod, as and for the purpose described.
