2 Application charit 7,
In rotary printing presses it is often necessary to make the plate cylinder large enough to carry six plates around its circumference in order to obtain a rigid im pression; four plates around making the M12, 24 and 48 page signatures. Theob ject "of my invention is to provide improve ments in the signature collecting, folding and delivery mechanism for this. type of press Iwhereby. products of 8 page signatures and multiples of 8s, can be Collected, folded and delivered; this being accomplished. by providing double. folder. each collecting,
folding. and. delivery .mechanism. compris-- .ingafifour-way collecting cylinder and coact- A practicalvembodiment of my invention 1 of the double folder, it being understood fthat the right hand mechanism is the same ling folding cylinders three fourt-hs the diameter of the collecting cylinder and being re spectively. provided with two folding blades, and two folding jaws arranged 120 apart instead of 180 apart as is usualithe fold- ,ing blade cylinder being: also provided with two sets of grippers for receiving the collected groups of sheets from the collecting cylinder is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which i Fig.1 represents a diagrammatic view of the .double folder showing both the. right andrleft hand collecting, folding and delivery me chanisms. p Fig. 2 represents a detail vertical longitudinal section through theleft hand collecting, folding and delivery mechanism.
.Fig. 3 represents a similar section taken in another plane. y
F 1g. 4 represents a plan view of aportion of the left hand collecting, folding and delivery mechanism. v V
I will proceed to describe the left hand collecting, folding and delivery mechanism in reversearrangementl y The pair, of coacting two. bladed rotary I cutters for severing the superimposed Webs ,into sheets of the desired length is denoted by 1 and Apair :ofsuitableguides 3 and '13 of the cylinder 9- are arranged totrans- 1927. Serial No. 189,551.
4 direct the shoetsbetween the two bladed rotary tuckerhv and the collecting cylinder 6. This collecting cylinder 6 is provided with. four sets of grippers 7. The folding cylinders are denoted by. 81 and 9' and'they are tl'iree-fourths the diameter ofthe collectv are arranged 120 apart on their cylinder 8 and their corresponding floating folding jaws 13 and 14 are arranged 120 apart on their cylinder 9.. Thefloating folding' jaws fer. their folded'product to the setoflgrippers 15 carriedby the lower delivery cylinder 16 and the set of floatingfoldingjaws I 14 ofthecylinder 9 are arranged'to. trans. fer theirfolded product to the set of grippers-17 of theupper delivery cylinder 18'.
lower and'upperdelivery cylinders arearr'angedfto-deliver their folded products into their respective lower and upper" left hand The sets of, grippers 15 and 17 of these packer deliverieslQ'and 20. Lower and upper slitters 21 and 22 may be provided for ,coaction with the lower and'upper delivery cylinders to slitthe collected and folded product. f Y In the right hand collecting, folding, and
delivery mechanism the pair of coacting; rotary cuttersare denoted by 23, '24,,the-
rotary tucker by'25, the collecting. cylinder by 2,6, the folding cylinders by 27, 28,10wer and upper delivery cylinders by 29, 30 and the. lower andupper righthand packer deliveries by 31, 32' The gears connecting the right andleft handinechanisms are denoted by 33, :34, whichgears may-be di com nected where it 'is desired' to use only one of i the mechanisms. 7 the collecting cylinder'ti with. the rotary cutter 1 is denoted by 3.5 an'dl the gear which. connects the collecting cylinder 26 with the rotary cutter 24 is. denoted by 36.
Th e gearv which connects u The usualcamsare providedfor operatin'gthegrippers, blades and jaws at the proper times for producing thedesired re- I -sults, which cams will not be specifically described herein as they are so well known in this art.
An. example of the various deliveries is as follows: In handling the product of a double web press in which each press carries seventy-two plates and each plate cylinder carries thirty-six plates, SlX around and six across, the wide webs are slit into two narrow ribbons of equal width. IVhen runningthree 4:8S and three 32s and three 16s combinations, the four narrow webs are superimposed and carried to the, left hand mechanism. On the remaining products one-half ofthe product of the press is carried to each of the mechanisms. In this case only two narrow webs are superimposed.
Therefore, when only one of the collecting, folding and delivery mechanisms 18 used, the 48 page product is dellvered to the upper packer delivery. When 16 and 32 age combinations are-dehvered in a s ngle collecting, folding and delivery mechanism the 32 page signatures are delivered to the upper pa'ckerdelivery and the-16 page signatures to the lower packerdelivery. WVhen the right and left collecting, folding and delivery mechanisms are used, the 24 page pro ductsare delivered to the upper packer delivery of the right hand mechanism and to the upper packer delivery of the left hand mechanism. The 16 and 8 page'combinations arerun double, i..e. the16s to the upper packer delivery of each mechanism and'the 8s to the lower packer delivery of each mechanism. I
, From the above description it will be seen that by making thecollecting cyli nder of eachjrnechanism a four-way cylinder and by makmg the folding cylinders threefourths the diameter of the collecting cylinder and by arranging the folding blades and folding jaws 120 apart instead of 180 apart as they would be for a press havinga cylinder with either four or eight plates around its circumference, I am enabled to collect, fold and deliver 8s and multiples of Ssfiom a rotary printing presshaving six plates around printing cylinders.
' By the tern' fcylinder as used. in the description, I contemplate 'any equlvalent means for passing the sheets and signatures fthrough the prescribed paths, and by the term-grippers I wish to include any equivalent devices suitable for. the purpose of leading the sheets or signatures through said prescribed paths.
What I'claim is f lIA mechanism arranged to collect, fold and deliver signatures of ,8s and multiples of 8s, comprising a four-way collecting cylinder and two coacting folding cylinders, the
