To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR RoEsEN, a citizen of theflllnited States, residing at New York'city, county of New York-and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding and Delivering Mechanism, fully described and represented iii the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in folding and associating mechanism for printing machines In arinting mechanisms of certain constructions, as, for instance, a press in which the form cylinders are provided with plates six pages across the cylinders and four pages around, the full capacity of the press cannot be utilized for the production of certain products, as, for instance, products having sixteen pages, without the use of two folders. This use of such presses is desir able for the'large production of such small products. The use of two folders, however, requires double mechanism for operating them, and when it' is desired to add a cover or an insert to the product, separate cover and insert feeding mechanisms for each folder and delivery is necessary. Such double folding and feeding echanisms therefore require a machine'of omplicated constructiomboth expensive to build and to operate.
It is one object of the present invention to produce an improved folding and associating mechanism whereby the full capacity of a press such as is above referred to may be utilized in producing small products of sixteen pages with a single folder.
It is a further object of the invention toproduce such a folding and. associating mechanism, including a single folder orde- .livery, which is compact and which can be arranged to cotiperatev with the usual numberof cover and insert feeding mechanisms where they are employed, so that the number of such cover and insert feeding mechanisms does not have to be increased.

The particular machine illustrated in the drawing is capacitatedto produce products from a web printed six pages wide and four pages around the. cylinder, forty-eight pages being printed at each revolution of" a printing couple, and'for producing a product of sixteen pages, though it will be understood that other products may also be 'produced'andfrom a machine printing a different number of pages. In the present f instance, when forty-eight pages are printed at one revolution to produce full capacity of sixteen, this web will be slit into three ribbons each two pages wide, and in the machine illustrated two of these ribbons will be superposed in the usual manner by suitable turner bars 1, and thedouble and single ribbons will be forwarded side by side through the machine over a guide-roll 2. Suitable forwarding devices are' employed, and in machines embodying the invention in its preferred form, and as shown in Figs. 1 to 6, the webs will be cut into sheets at the half turn, that is, each sheet will be two pages wide and two pages long,

they are forwarded through guides 5 by each operation thereof, and a product from the other end at every other operation thereof. As shown, this is capacitated to receive the superposed webs and the'single web used in the particular machine shown, side by side, and operates to produce a product of sixteen pages from one endat each operation and a product of sixteen pages from the other end at every other operation. While the particular mechanism for effecting this may be widely varied, in the par ticular construction illu trated there is provided a folding and ollecting cylinder which is provided with sheet-taking devices which are supported so that they can be operated at different times longitudinally of the cylinder -thus providing for an unequal collection of the sheets on each side of the cylinder.

The folding and collecting'cylin'der 10 is,
in the particular construction shown, capacitated to receive sheets cut from the superposed webs and from a single web which are dorwarded to-it side by side and the cyliner operated to deliver a product from the superposed sheets at each revolution and a product from the single sheets at every other revolution. While the sheet-taking devices may be varied, in "the particular construc: tion illustrated these sheet taking devices are grippers. In the particular construction illustrated there are provided pairs of grippers 16, 1,7 and 18, 19. The grippers 16, 17 are located at one side or end of the cylinder and are carried on arms 20, 21, these arms being mounted on rods 22, 23. The rod 22 finds its bearings at one end in a central web 24 ofthe cylinder, and at marked 10 in the drawings,

In the particular construction illustrated, referring to Figs. 3 to 5, the pairs of'grippers on each side of the cylinder include a long pair and a short pair. These pairs of grippers on each end of the cylinder will be mounted and operated'so as to have the usual opening and closing movement for taking and releasing the sheets. The box cams carry studs 46, 47, to which are connected connecting rods 48, 49, which in turn are connected at 50, 51 to lever arms 52, 53 pivoted on short shafts 54, -55 suitably journaled in the frame of the machine. Also pivoted to the short shafts 54, 55 are cam lever arms 56, 57, which are so arranged as to be connected to the lever arms 52, 53 by I bolts 39, and which carry .cam rolls 58, 59
running in grooves 60 of cams 62, 63, which are mounted 'on an operating shaft'64 extending across the machine. The cam lever arms 52, 53 are provided with extensions 65, 66 by which these arms can be locked to the frame ofthe machine by bolts 61 and prevented from operating, as shown in Figs.
2 and 3, this being done to permit the machine tobe operated as hereinafter described.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5, and as just described, the parts are illused off from the left hand end of the cylinder at each rotation thereof, and a collected product is folded off from the right hand end at every other rotation thereof. In other words, in the construction shown in these figures, and as so far described, the as a folding-0E cylinder at one end and a collecting cylinder atthe other at each rotation, and as a folding-off cylinder on both ends on every other rotation. When this construction is used, the

When the-cyl1nder is thus operating to effect this, the cam lever arm 52, shown in Fig. 3,is-l oc ked, so that the gripper operating cam 38 is not shifted and the long set of grippers have simply an idle opening and closing movement, the sheets 1 being taxen by the short rlpperarms.

In machines embodying the invention in its best form, means may be provided for covering side to the cylinder 10, which are or may be of the usual constructon. The operation of the machine may be briefly stated as follows, it being understood ply webs being forwarded side by side and" cut at half turn, that is, into sheet lengths two pages long longitudinally of the web. When this product is to be produced, theL cylinder 10 acts as a collecting cylinder on I one end and as a folding ofi cylinder on the other end at each revolution. Assuming the two-ply sheets to be forwarded to the. left hand side of the cylinder shown in Fig. 2, the parts "will be in the position shown in Fig. 3 for this section of the cylinder. As the two superposed webs form a product sixteenpages when folded, the cylinder at this end delivers to the delivery cylinder two superposed sheets at each revolution When this is done, the gripper 16 takes the leading end of the two'sheets which are car-' ried around the cylinder and folded ofi by the nipping jaws 69, the cam 71 being in position to allow the folding ofi' jaws on the left hand end of the cylinder 67 to operate at each revolution, as shown in Fig. 3. lVhen the machine is thus operated the cam 38 is so positioned that the movement of the grippers 17 is an idle movement, taking place after the grippers have passed'out of the path of the leading end of the sheet, so as to leave the short grippers clear to take the sheet.
As only one sheet is going to the other side of the cylinder, that is, the right hand end of the cylinder shown in Fig; 2, it is necessary to collect from this cylinder two products to produce sixteen pages. This is effected, as before described, by positioning the parts as shown in Fig. 4, in which the cam operating arm 53 is unlocked and free to be reciprocated by the cam arm 57 and cam roll 59, which acts to shift the cam 41 so as to give the long grippers their proper opening and closing movements. When the machine is thus operating, the long grippers take the leading end of the first sheet and carry it around the cylinder, the short grippers taking the leading end of the next succeeding superposed sheet and acting to carry .both the sheets around thecylinder, the long grippers19 having their opening movement delayeduntil the short grippers have seized both sheets. =The shiftingof the cam also.

What is claimed is:
1. The combination with means for forwarding a plurality of webs side by side, of sheet-severing means, a single-folding and collectingmechanism to which the sheets are forwarded side by side, sheet-taking de vices on each end of the folding and collecting mechanism, and means for operating the sheet-taking devices whereby the folder and collector may act to fold ofl' a product; .on one end and a collected product on the other or a collected product on both ends.
2. The combination with means for forwarding a plurality of webs side by side, of sheet-severing means, 'a single folding and collecting. mechanism to which-the sheets "are forwarded side by side,v sheet-takihg devices on each end of the folding and collecting mechanism, means for operating the sheet-taking devices whereby the folder and collector may act to fold off a product on one end and a collected product on the other or a collected product on both ends, and a delivery mechanism.
