SHEET innrirvnny.
Application filed-November 7,4918, Serial No. 261,453]
To all whom it may concern: u
Be it known that I, OSCAR Ronsnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, :have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet Deliveries, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part" of the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in delivery mechanism for printing machines.
Incertain type of deliveries a plurality of sheets are collected to produce a product of sixteen, thirty-two, etc. pages, these collected sheets being folded and then "delivered. This class of product has sufficient body so that it can be readily delivered with the usual stacker delivery. Insorne instances, however, it is desired to deliver a sheet folded once to produce a'four page product. l/Vith this class of product difiiculty has been experienced because such a product, owing to its lightness or lack of body, renders itself liable to displacement when delivered to the stacker or other de-' livery, and, furthermore, because of this lightness difficulty has been experienced in" H I 1 and in which the folded sheets may be colproduce a construction in whichby silencing certain parts a product collected to any desired number of pages may be folded and delivered.
A further object of the invention is to produce a construction oapacitated to collect v I I "blades of cylinder 3 will be t med to operatefeither to fold off a single: sheetor a' cola folded product and then collect such folded products into bunches and deliver such bunched product. I
It is a further object of the, invention to produce a mechanism capacitated to handle previously cut sheets or to cut sheets from a continuous web and handle such cut web sheets. i I V may be sent direct to the delivery.
Generally speaking, the invention consists in the"provisionv with sheet forwarding or" new ing'cylinder co-operating therewith for collecting a bunch of the products forwarded and the collecting mechanism of such cylintoit from the first cylinder, the second cylinder delivering these. bunched products der beingso arranged that, if desired, a
collected 'product from. the first cylinder For a full understanding of the invention reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, which'illustrate diagrammatically so much of the mechanism as is necessar forunderstanding the invention. nc these .c lraw1ngs:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view ofa con.
struction in which a web may be forwarded,
sheets cut therefrom, these websheets collected and 1 folded, if desired, and the collectedand folded sheets again collected in bunches for deli ve ry,'or single web sheets,
folded, collected in bunches and delivered.
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic view of a construction in which cut' sheets maybe forwarded either singly or collected andfolded,
l'ectedi in bunches for delivery, or a collected product forwarded todelivery without second collection.
Referring now to Figure 2,a cut sheet is forwarded in any to the drawings, and first the sheet'to a folding and collecting mechanism which is illustrated in the formof a cylinder The sheets are folded from A further object ofthe invention is to this cylinder to a pair of folding off rolls 5, 6. In the best construction this cylinder 3 will, also, be a collecting cylinder for 001 lecting a plurality ofsheets, the cylinderfor this purpose being provided with sheet taking devices, such as a pair of pins 7. It will be understood thatthe folding lected product when the cylinder is being used for collecting.
. From the folding rolls "5, 6, 'where such bunches, where a light product is to be handled, or can be arranged to act as a straight delivery to deliver a product collected by the cylinder 3, where no second collection is desired. While this mechanism may be varied 'within wide limits, in the particular construction illustrated, there is acting to collect the product in the usual manner.
, If it be desired to employ the cylinder simply as a forwarding cylinder, these grippers are silenced, and there are provided forwarding rolls 11, 12 co-operating with the cylinder, which act to forward the product from the folding rolls 5, 6 to the usual draw off rolls 13, from which the product is delivered to any suitabledelivery, as for instance, the pusher delivery 14. illustrated.
With this construction a light folded product may be collected in bunches of such thickness that they can be handled by the delivery, or a collected product may be sent through the machine and folded, the only change in mechanism being the silencing of the gripper devices on the second collecting cylinder, and rendering operative the pins 7.
In Figure 1 there is illustrated a conwarding a web, severing sheets therefrom, and either collecting such sheets in a desired product, folding them, and delivering them, or folding single sheets, collecting such sheets in bunches, and delivering the bunches, or collecting in bunches a plurality of collected. sheets, the construction shown in this figure permitting a wider range of products to be secured than in constructions specifically illustrated in Fig. 2.
Referring now to Figure 1,1the web W, which like the sheets referred to in the description of Fig. 2 may come from a printing machine of any desired character, is forwarded by a pair of forwarding rolls 15, 16 to a cutting mechanism, shown as cylinders 17 18, by which the web is severed into sheets. These cut sheets may be for warded by a pair of forwarding rolls-'19, 20, to a collecting and folding mechanism. This mechanism includes a first cylinder 21, which may be employed as a collecting cylinder, being provided with'three sets of sheet taking devices, as long and short grippers 22, 23. This cylinder 21 may also operateas, a folding-off cylinder, beingprovided with folding blades 24, folding off nism by which a plurality of folded single sheets or a product of folded collected sheets may be collected for final delivery. This mechanism is illustrated in the form of a cylinder 27 provided with collecting devices in the form of long and short sheet taking grippers 28, 29. From this cylinder the product is finally delivered to any suitably delivery, as a stacker delivery 30, similar to delivery let, before referred to. i In the construction illustrated in this figure, a wide variety of products may be ob tained and delivered. If a single collected product from cylinder 21 is to be delivered, the collecting grippers of cylinder 27 are silenced and the collected folded product delivered. If, however, folded single sheets are desired as a final product,these-sheets are folded as described and collected on the cylinder 27, and the bunch of folded sheets delivered. If it be desired to produce a large product, both cylinder 21 and cylinder 27 may be operated in their collecting capacity, a product being collected on cylinder 21 and a plurality of such collected products being collected on cylinder 27, and
, then delivered. struction which may be employed for for.
lVhile theinvention is shown in its preferred form, it will be understood that various changes may be made in the specific mechanisms for carrying out the invention, and that by changing the sheet taking devices on the different collecting cylinders a wide range of products may be obtained, and the invention is not restricted to the precise arrangement or operation of these collecting cylinders.
hat is claimed is z.
