Description

WLVANDEV E NTER. Door-Check.
No. 167,590. PatentedSept.7,l875.
INVENIOR' M l/MW VWTNESSES ATTORNEYS WILLIAM VANDEVENTER, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,590, dated September 7, 1875; application filed June 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM VANDEVEN- TER, of Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in'Door Stops and Supports; and I do hereby declare .that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a vertical section of door stop and support. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a front view. Figs. 4 are detailed views.
This invention has relation to improvements in devices which are designed to sustain a door, and thereby to prevent its sagging; and the nature of the invention consists of an angular roller-frame, recessed in the lower face of the door, so as not to project beyond the door-face, in connection with the track-plate provided with inclines and a stop, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the jamb of a door-casing, to which is hinged in any suitable manner a door, B. This door is recessed upon its lower partand inner edge, for the purpose of receiving the angular frame U of a supporting-roller, D, which has its bearings in the said frame. This frame is secured to the lower edge of the door by means of a screw or screws, 8.
In practice, the door may be hung in its frame so that its lower edge will be free of the lintel. In this case the opening thus made will be filled up by a Weatherstrip, a, and the wear of roller D thereon will be prevented by the interposition of a metallic plate, I), which will be secured to the said strip.
When the door is opened, forming with the wall of the house an angle of ninety degrees, roller D will run upon a metallic plate, E, in the nature of a track, which plate is supported by means of a stringer, c, rigidly secured to the floor, within proper distance from the Wall, as shown.. Track-plate E is provided with an upward incline, (1, upon its front end, followed by a downwardly-inchned surface, 0, and an upwardly-projecting lug or shoulder, f,- consequently, in mounting the rail rollerD will first raise the door slightly in mounting incline d, then lower it in descending incline 0, thereby bringing it in contact with shoulderf. The
natural tendency of the door to run down incline e, and the slight react-ion of the hinges of the door, caused by the latter ascending inclined, will cause it to be securely locked to the plate, and will prevent it from being slammed against the wall by sudden gusts of wind, or its being closed thereby.
It will be observed that the angular rollerframe is recessed in the lower end of the door, so as to afford no obstruction, and be flush with the door, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
I am aware that a door-holder, consisting of a pivoted arm provided with a roller, has heretofore been employed, in connection with a spring and stop attachment, and I therefore lay no claim to such invention, which is objectionable on account of the pivoted roller projecting beyond the door, and presenting an obstruction.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The angular frame 0, provided with the roller D, and recessed in the lower face of the door, and flush with it, in combination with the track-plate E, having the inclines d e, and stop f, constructed as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM VANDEVENTER.
Witnesses B. H. MORSE, V GEORGE E. UPHA'M.
