The invention is an attachment for linotype, intertype or line casting machines which works in conjunction with the normal operation of the machine andautomatically operates to stop the machine when using the high mold for 18. to 86 point and also the mold for 42 point and up-ward.
This invention is an improvement over the device disclosed in an application for the same thing which was filed April 7, 1927, with the Serial Number 181,694; in that the dog is made with three slidable members which will permit the device to operate while using the mold for 42 point and upward in addition to operating with the high mold for 18 to 36 point.
The object of the inventionis to provide an automatic safety stop which will not interfere with the normal operation of the machine and which will automatically stop the machine when the first elevator travels beyond the correct position.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for constructing the ,vise automatic stop mold disc dog which will permit a part of the dogto slide to automatically operate a safety. device when the machine is operating normally while the remaining part remains stationary.
A further object of the invention is to provide a slidable attachment on the vise automatic stop rod which will engage the upper portion of the dog.
A still further object ofv the invention is to provide a slidable attachmenton the vise automatic stop rodwhich will not interfere with the normal operation of the machine.
And a still further object of the invention is to provide an' attachment tor.auto mat-ically stopping the machine when the first elevator slide fails to stop at the correct position, which isof a simple and economical construction.

The disc dog 1 is made as shown in Figures Sande with a lower section e, an intermediate section 5 and an upper. section G. Thelower section t ismade with a circular opening extending tozthe point 8. and a projection 9 that extends upward througha slotv 10in the member 5 and at-the upper end; of the projection 9 is a smaller pro jection. 11 which extends into a slot 12in the member 6 A spring 13 is provided in the device and it will be observed-that the spring will resiliently hold the. member5 in the position shmzvn however it will permit the lower portion 4 to slide as shown in Figures 6 and 7 when the members and 6 are held and will also permit the members 4 and 5 to slide when the member 6 is held. It is also understood that this dog may be made square as shown in Figure 5 or may be made of any suitable shape as may be desired. This dog is slidably mounted in the circular opening provided in the frame for the vise automatic stop mold disc dog.
The bar 2 is vertically and slidably held by a U-shaped band 14 which is placed around the vise automatic stop rod which is indicated by the numeral 15 and at the upper end of the bar 2 is a lever 16 which is pivotally attached to it by a pin 17 and which extends upward through'the elevator frame which is indicated by the numeral 18 to a point 19 so that it will engage the under side of the first elevator slide head as it moves downward. The lever 16 is provided with a spring 20 which is attached to an 7 eye 21 onthe underside of the frame 18 to resiliently hold the lever and bar 2 in the upper position shown in Figure 1 It will be understood that any other suitable means may be used for slidably mounting the bar 2, for moving it downward when the elevator slide moves beyond the correct position, and for resiliently holding it upward.
The clip 3 may be readily attached to the disc adjacent the mold when using the upper moldand it will be observed that it will engage the upper portion of the dog 1 and thereby force the dog against the lower end of the bar 2 when the operator has neglected to throw the filling piece into place as indicated'by the numeral 22, and the head of the elevator slide has moved downward beyond the correct position. It will be noted in Figure 8 that the fillingpiece 22 is pivotally mounted on the first elevator frame at the point 23 and when the upper mold is being used it is thrown over from the position shown in full lines 'to the position shown in dotted lines so that it will engage the underside of the upper end of the first elevator slide.
The machine is'also provided with an additional filling piece which is indicated by the numeral 24 and when using the machine for the 42 point and upward molds both of the filling pieces may be placed under the head of the elevator slide which will permit the device to operate, however if either of these pieces are neglected the bar 2 will move downward and engage the end of the dog 1 and stop the machine as hereinafter described.
It will be noted that inthe normal o'peration of the machine a screw as indicated by the numeral 25 and located in the upper end of the elevator slide engages a pin 26 at the upper end of the vise automatic stop rod 16 and forces this rod downward so that a projection 27 will pass below the under side of the dog 1 and permit the dog to move outward to the position shown in Figure 3, however when the first elevator slide fails to move downward to the proper position the pin 26 is not moved downward so that the dog 1 will engage the projection 27 and prevent the mold disc moving over so that the machine will stop. This new device operates to stop the machine when the elevator slidemoves'downward too far when the upper or 18 to 36 point mold is being used as when the slide moves downward to such a positionthat it moves the bar 2 downward with the clip 3 in place the clip 3 will force the dog 1 against the bar 2 and stop the machine.
7 It will be notedthat the clip 3 may be made with a large surface as indicated by the numeral 28 as shown in Figure 1 or with a very narrow surface as shown in Figure 2 and'when it is desired to use the machine for the 18 to 36 point mold the. clips shown in Figure 2 will be used whereas when it is used for the mold for 42ipoint and upward the clip shown in Figure 1 is used. These clips are placed directly opposite the molds with which they are being used so that they will engage the dog which is directly below the mold that is being used. ing three slidable members therefore permits the machine to be used for the'regular mold, for the 18 to 36 point mold and for the mold for 42 point and upward and provides a positive stopping means for either of these molds when notopera-ting properly. It will be observed that the clips 3 are omitted for the regular mold and when using the device with the regular mold the upper portion of the dog will remain shown in Figure 7 and when using it with the 18 to 36 point mold as shown in Figures 2 and 6 the upper slidable member only will remain stationary, however if the operator fails to use the filling piece the bar 2 will move downward to the position shown in Figure 2 and thereby engage the end ofthe member 5 as well as 6 and stop the machine. hen using the machine for the mold for the 42 point and upward it is necessary to use both filling pieces and the clip with a large surface 28 is used so that it will engage both of the upper members of the dog and should the operator fail to use either of the filling pieces or both the bar 2 will move downward untilit engage the slidable member of the dog and thereby stop the machine.
It will beimderstood that'changes may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of theinventon, one of which'changes may be in the design or arrangement of the dog 1, another may be in the use of other means for supporting the bar2 or in the use of a bar of another'design,

The construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description. To use the device the dog 1 and the bar 2 may be readily attached to or built into the machine and may remain in place while the machine is being used to operate with either of the molds. hen using the upper molds the clip 3 may be attached to the disc and it will be observed that it will function to stop the machine when the first elevator slide moves beyond the correct position.
Having thus fully described the invention what I claim as new and desire to se cure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, a split dog, means for resiliently holding the members endwise, said dog being adaptable to replace the vise automatic stop mold disc dog of a casting machine, a clip adaptable to be attached to the mold disc to engage a portion of the said dog, a bar slidable on the vise automatic stop rod, means whereby the said bar will be automatically moved downward to engage another portion of the said dog when the first elevator slide fails to stop at the correct position means for resiliently holding the said bar upward and another portion of the said dog adaptable to be engaged by the mold on the said mold disc so that it will engage the vise automatic stop rod to stop the machine and thereby perform the normal function of the dog.
2. In a device of the class described, a split dog, means for resiliently holding the sections, one of the said'sections being adaptable to be engaged by the mold on the mold disc, removable means for engaging the other of the said sections, a bar slidably mounted on the stop rod and adaptable to be engaged by the sections of the said dog, and suitable means for operating the said bar as desired.
3. In a device of the class described, a split pin adaptable to replace the vise auto matic stop mold disc dog of a casting machine, one section of the said pin being adaptable to be engaged by the mold on the said mold disc, clips on the said mold disc for engaging the other of the said sections and means for engaging the opposite end of the said pin to stop the operation of the machine as desired.
.4. In a device of the class described, a resiliently held split pin adaptable to replace the stop dog of a line casting machine, said pin adaptable to permit the machine to operate normally, and means adaptable to engage the said pin to stop the operation of the said machine when the elevator slide fails to stop at a correct position, said engaging means being adaptable to operate for a plurality of positions of the said slide.
5. In an attachment for line casting machines, a slidable member having three slidable sections, means a for resiliently holding the sections in relation to each other, said slidable member adaptable to replace the vise automatic stop mold disc dog of a casting machine, the lower of the said sections adaptable to perform the function of the vise automatic stop mold disc dog, the intermediate section adaptable to function to stop the machine when the operator fails to place the filling piece in position for using the 18 to 86 point mold, and the upper of the said sections adaptable to function to stop the machine when the operator fails to place the filling pieces in position for using the mold for 42 point and upward.
6. In a casting machine, a dog adaptable to replace the vise automatic stop mold disc dog having a plurality of slidable sections adapt-able to function with the regular mold, and also additional molds to stop the machine automatically when the first eleva tor slide fails to stop at the correct position for the mold being used.
