JAGQE fiEiItAND, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOB T0 STRANSKY PRODUCTS CORPORA- TICK, OF NEW YOBK,.N. Y., A. CORPORATION. OF NEW YORK.
ANCHORING DEVICE FOR FEB-HEB PI TURES AND THE Application filed November 10, 1826. Serial No. 147,525.
This invention relates to the art of hanging framed pictures, mirrors, signs, and the like, and has particular reference to means for anchoring suchsuspended articles indesired alincrnent and in spaced relation to the wall against which the article is suspended.
In hanging pictures and the like, it has been found desirable to maintain the article completely away from the wall against which it is hung, whereby to prevent accu mulation of dust and consequent soiling of the wall behind the picture. It is also de 'sirable. to anchor the picture to prevent lateral movement of it with reference to the wall. One object of the present invention is to provide an anchoring device which will maintain suspended articles in the desirable positions above pointed out.
Another object is to provide such a device as an accessory for picture frames and the like, it being easily and quickly applicable in combination with other well known forms of fastening elements.
Another object is to provide such a device which will be invisible from the front of the picture, and which will not substantially mar or injure the wall surface.
Another object is to provide'such a device which will be simple in construction, strong and durable in service, economical to manufeature, and a substantial improvement in the art.
These and other objects and advantages will bereadily apparent from the foliowin description when taken in connection wit the accompanying drawings, wherein two embodiments of the invention are shown by way of illustratiomand wherein: v I
Fig. l is a side elevation of asuspended picture frame equipped with the improved anchoring means; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail elevation, partly in section, of one form of anchoring device;
Fig. 4 is a to plan view of the same; Fi 5 is a Si e elevation. showing a modi-v tied orni of'the invention; and
Fig. 6 is a to plan view of the modified anchoring mem r, se.-. I In Figs. 1 to 4 inc usive, the improved anchoring device 10 has been apghed to a picture frame=11 or the like, whic is suspended. on a wall12 by mcans'of a wire or cord 13.
. The wire 13 may be centrally supported by u apart as shown in Fig.2 and preferably in horizontal alinement, and spaced inwardly from the side and bottom edges of the frame whereby to be invisible from the front thereoi. Each of the anchoring device 10 in-.'
eludes a spacing'element for securement to the back of the frame and has a head mem- .ber extending rearwardly therefrom, and anchoring member.
The spacing element shown in the drawings is a tack of the type commonly referred to as a push pin, and includes a cylindrical means associated with said head body portion 16 having at it'sinner end an enlarged base or flange 17, and at its outer end an enlargfd head portion 18. The outer side of. the end portion 18 may be substantially smooth and fiat and its inner side is defined by an inclined shoulder 19. -Extending inwardly from the base or flange 17 is a pointed shank 20 formed of suitable metal or wire secured in any suitabie mannor to b 17, and b forcing said shank 20 into the material 0 the frame 11 it may be {firmly secured. in place.
The anchoring'element has been shown in the draws as rormedof sheet metal, but obviously its salient features maybe incorporated in other structures. Itincludes a cap portion 21, here shown as circular in outline, adapted to overhe'the outerend of the head 18 of the spacin element, and provided with a peripheral ange or skirt portlon 22. Adjacent its ed e the skirt portion 22 is deflected'inward y as at 23 to provide resilient gripping means adapted to be sprung oventhehead of the spacing element for detachably securing the anchoring element to. the spacingelement Extending outwardly from the cap 21 in a direction away from that of the skirt portion 22, is a relativelp sharp inted barb. or prong 24, preferab y locat at the center-of'the de'-' vice. The pro rtions are such that the prong 24; W111. ecapable of iercing and entering the wall 1211s clear y Fig.- 2, and will hold the suspended article inst-lateral displacement without danger shownin' of injury to the'wall. When the device is formed from sheet metal, the prong 24 may be integrally formed by deflection of a triangular area from the cap portion 21, or it may be formed-of a separate piece of mater1al secured in any suitable manner. a In Figs; 5 and (3 a modified form of the invention has been shown also formed from sheet metal and having a disc shaped cap 26 provided around its edges with a plurality of spaced resilient clips 27, the extremities of which are deflected inwardly at 28 to engage the inner shouldered edge of the head 18 and to hold the anchoring element on the spacing element by springing the clips onto the head of the spacing element. The prong or barb 29 is substantially similar to the barb 24 of the first described embodiment.
It will be evident from the foregoing that an anchoring device in the form of an accessory for suspended articles has been provided, the construction being extremely sim le, economical to produce, and easy to app y, and'thoroughly practical in every way. When a suspended article, for example, a framed picture, is so equipped, it
will be permanently spaced away from the wall, reventing the accumulation of dust behincFthe picture, and it will be maintained in its desired level condition. Any other well known form of fastening element having a head portion, may be substituted for the push pin, and the invention is susceptible of numerous other modifications. The right is herein reserved to make such chan es as fall within the scope of the append ed claims without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination with a picture frame or the like, a spacing element adapted to be secured to the back of the frame and having a head extending a substanital distance'away from the frame, and piercing means detachably carried by and mounted on the head for piercing the wall on which the article is suspended, whereby to take up the thrust of the spacing element and to hold the article against lateral movement.
'ing member proper suspended position;
2. In combination with a picture frame or the like, suspended against a wall, a spachaving a head extending away from the frame toward the wall and provided with a fastening element for securement to the back of the frame, and detachable anchoring means resiliently held on said head for engaging the wall to hold the frame against lateral movement and in spaced relation to the wall.
3. In combination with a picture frame or the like suspended against a wall, a spacing member having a head extending away from the frame toward the wall and provided with "a fastening element for Securement to the back of the frame, and an'anchor'ing' member detachably held on the head of the spacing member, said anchorin member being provided with a rearwar ly extending barb adapted to enter the wall to hold the frame in its proper suspended position.
4. In combination with a picture frame or the like suspended against awall, a spacing member having a head extending away from the frame toward the wall and provided with a fastening element for securement to the hack of the frame, and an anchoring member detachably held on the head of the spacing member, said anchoring member being formed from sheet metal and provided with resilient means for gripping the head of the spacing member and a barb adapted to enter the wall to hold the frame in its 5. An anchoring device for framed pictures-and the like, having a body portion, in-
wardly extending resilient gri ping means element adapted for anchorage in a wall, and
all formed from sheet metal. u 6. An anchoring device for framed pictures and the like, formed from sheet metaland having a substantially circular body ortion provided at its peripherywith resil- 1ent means for gripping a tack head or the like when the resilient means are sprung onto the head, and a substantially central prong extending outwardly from the body ortion.
