CYLINDER-HEAD LIFTER.
Application filed September 13, 1927. Serial No. 219,310.
This invention relates to a cylinder head lifter, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind for ,f210111- tating the removal, handling and reinstall ng of cylinder heads for internal combustion engines without removing the rocker arms and shafts.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind to facilitate easier handling of cylinder heads and to speed up service operation by permitting a cylinder head to be removed, handled and reinstalled while assembled. I.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a lifter of this kind which open ates to hold the rocker arms in their natural operating position while handling a head and which in its use avoids the necessity of removing bolts, rocker arms, rocker arm shafts and studs from the cylinder head.
Furthermore, it is an object of the iiivention to provide a device of this kind which permits the handling of a cylinder head while hotv and which can be readily used by one man with one hand free to line up push rods. i
The invention also has for an object to provide a lifter of this kind which can be readily employed for properly manipulating a cylinder head without danger of spilling oil or sediment from the valve pockets.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved cylinder head lifter whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of our invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view of a cylinder head with a lifter constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention operatively engaged therewith;
Figure 2 is a view in top plan of the structure as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in end elevation of the structure as shown in Figure 1 with the major portion of the cylinder head and its parts diagrammatically indicated by broken lines;
Figure 4: is a view in perspective of our improved lifter as herein disclosed unapplied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, H denotes a cylinder head of a well known type provided with overhead valves. Each of the valves comprises an upstanding stem 1 constantly urged outwardly by an encircling spring 2 and which has contact in a well known manner with an end portion of a rocker arm 3 supported substantially midway its length upon a rocker shaft 4. The shaft at is operatively mounted upon the head H in spaced relation thereto through the medium of a bearing block 5 or the like.
Our improved lifter, as herein disclosed, comprises a substantially U-shaped member M, the side members 6 of which have their free extremities continued by the 'substan tially perpendicularly related fingers 7 arranged in parallelism. Eachof these eX- tensions or fingers 7, as herein disclosed, is substantially sigmoidal in form with the inner part of its upper marginal portion recessed, as at 8, so that said fingers 7 may be readily engaged beneath the shafts 1 and effectively engage the same when it is desired to lift the head H.
Pivotally connected, as at 9, with the side members 6 of the member M are the side members 10 of a second substantially U-shaped member M. The pivotal connections 9 are positioned a material distance inwardly of the free extremities of the side members 10 of the member M. Disposed through and supported by said free extremities of the side members 10 is an elongated, rod 11 which extends a material distance beyond the opposite ends of'the member M.
When it is desired to lift or otherwise handle a cylinder head, the fingers 7 are engaged from below or inwardly of the shafts 4: and the intermediate portion of the member M is swung toward the intermediate portion of the member M. This movement of the member M will bring the rod 11 into contact with the end portions of the rocker arms 3 contacting with the valve stems 1.
The members M and M when in working engagement with the head H have their intermediate portions sufliciently close together to permit the same to be readily grasped by one hand of the operator leaving the other hand'free to lineup the push rods or to perform such other necessary operations as may be required.
it is also believed t'o' be obvious that with the use of our improved lifter asherein set forth it eliminates the necessity of removing bolts, rocker arms, rocker arm shafts and studs from a cylinder head When being removed liandled or reinstalled and that the lifter holds the rocker arms during such manipulations in their natural operating positions. It will be-under-stood that the construction of our lift-er is such that the tighter the members M and M are held the harder the device Will grip the head;
a From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a. cylinder head lifter. constructedzin accordance with my in vention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason ofv the convenience and facility with which it may beassembledand operated audit will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of soine'change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit: thereof and for this reason we do not Wish to be understooc limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carryingout our invention in practice except as-hereinafter claimed.
We claim 1. A cylinder head lifter comprising 21.,
U-shaped member, the side members of Which have their free extremities provided With angularly disposed lingers, asecond U-shapedmember having its side members pivotally engaged With the SlLlQ'DIOlHl'JGI'S of tlie first named U-shap'ed member and a rod carried; by the free extremities of the side members of the second U-shaped me: ber.
2. A cylinder head lifter comprising a U-shaped member, the side members of which have their free extremitiesprovided with 'angularly disposed fingers, a second U-shaped member having its side'members pivotally engaged with the side members of the first named U-shaped member, and a rod carried by the free extremities of the side mei'nbers of the second U-shaped member'and extending beyond the opposite ends of the first named .J-shaped member.
3. A cylinder head lifter comprisingtivo pivotally connected members, one of said members having means to engage from below the rocker arm shafts of a cylinder, head, the other of said members: having means to engage therocker arms carriedby the head for holding said rocker arms in substantially their normal positions during a lifting operation.
In testimony whereof We hereunto a'liiii our signatures. I
