Description

J. ci. MOORE VALVE LIFTER Filed Aug. 23, 1923 lNVE NTOR JHMES C- MOORE 3/ ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 11, 1924.
UNITED ST OFFICE.
VALVE LIFTER.
Application filed August 23, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JAMES C. hloonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
My-invention is an improved valve lifter.
The object of my invention is to provide a valve lifter which may be operated upon. any type of motor irrespective of the size.
Another object is to provide a lifter which is simple in construction and effective in operation.
A further object is to provide a lifter which may be readily disassembled and packed away in the tool box.
Further objects and advantages will be more specifically described in the following detailed description.
In the annexed drawing in which my invention is illustrated:
Figure 1 is a side View of my valve lifter.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view of the gripping collar.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing: my lifter comprises a post 1, which is adapted to slide in a guiding sleeve 2. A supporting arm 3 is removably secured in the sleeve 2 by means of a bolt 4: and wing nut 5, by the removal of this bolt and nut the arm may be removed for packing. A depending finger 6 is formed on the end of the arm 3 which engages the cylinder block during the valve lifting operation.
Valve spring engaging arms 7 and 8 are pivoted on either side of the rod 1 at the bottom thereof, and are held in a horizontal position by a bolt 9 which extends through the post 1 and through the upstanding lugs 10 and 11 formed on the arms 7 and 8 respectively. By removing the bolt 9 the arms 7 and 8 may be swung against the post 1 on their pivot 12. The arms 7 and 8 may be adjusted to accommodate various sizes of springs by a bolt 13 extending through said arms, and a wing nut 14 threaded on said bolt. A
Serial No. 658,911.
spring 15 surrounds the bolt 13 between the arms 7 and 8 and tends to urge said arms apart. Spring engaging jaws 16 and 17 are formed on the ends of the arms 7 and 8 respectively.
.An actuating collar 16 surrounds the post 1, and is provided with a bore 17, through which said post extends. This bore is cut at an angle through the collar which permits the collar to bind against the post in moving it upwardly. Dogs 18 and 19 are secured on the top and bottom of the collar 16 respectively and are adapted to engage the post 1 to move it upwardly, and to pre-.
vent it moving downwardly.
A spring 20 is secured to the sleeve 2 and extends downwardly parallel to the post 1, and is formed with a hook 21 at the lower end thereof. This spring bears against the collar 16 and holds it in a horizontal position so that the post 1 may be moved vertically within it.
A handle 22 is pivoted to the collar 16 and a link 23 is pivoted to the handle and to the sleeve 2.
In operation, the arm 3 is placed on the engine block and the jaws 16 and 17 are placed around the bottom of the valve spring. The handle 22 is now moved downwardly, which causes the dog 19 to engage the post 1 and thereby raise said post and. compress the spring.
The handle may now be released and the post will remain in position, since the dog 18 engages one side thereof and prevents any downward movement.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A valve lifter comprising a post, a. guiding sleeve, a supporting arm secured to said sleeve, valve gripping arms secured to said post, a collar surrounding said post, a handle pivoted to said collar, and a link pivoted to said collar and to said handle.
2. A valve lifter comprising a post, a guiding sleeve, a supporting arm removably mounted on said sleeve, valve gripping arms mounted on said post, a collar on said post, dogs secured to said collar, and adapted to engage said post, a handle pivoted to said collar, and a link pivoted to said handle and to said sleeve.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JAMES C. MOORE.
