R. w. JOHNSON COLLAPS IBLE TUBE Filed June 8, 1927 ilvwewro'a A. W. WOH/YJO/Y attouuzq i e to say that in I Patented June19 1928.-
UNITED PATENT for-Pica ROBERT w- JOHNSON,
on NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T0, JOHNSON 8a oH soN, OF NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION on NEW JERSEY.
COLLAPSIBLE' e My present invention provides certain imqprovements in collapsible tubes wilh the View o't-minimizing the cost thereof by simplifying the construction and-operation of I the dispensing portion :and providing rea-. sonable assurance of less delinquencvjcarc lessness ,or' neglect with reference to the use of the cap.
Collapsible tubes are used extensively {or 1 dispensing various creams,-dentifrices, emollients, medicament-s, and other preparations too numerous to mention. Their usual co1ii'-. plement is a. screwcap and it is conservative the average household whether by choice or habit 'or neglect'the cap is abandoned. or lost long betore ithas served its purpese,,although ot-coursethere are occa'sions when because of the plasticity of the metal thread stripping occurs, whiclrmakes it exceedingly awkward it not impossible to applythe cap. Sometimes the caps are made captive as by awire or .other flexible con nection. It has also been proposed to provide a tapered nozzle which wilhafford a '25 friction grip for a matedcap. So also plugs and various otherspecral constructions have, been tried orsuggeeted. All ofthese-meas -ures are objectionable from the cost standpolnt if for no other reason.
v 4 The desideratumis the solution of the'cap probleinwithout serious departure from the usual method of production, and that is the ultimate object and result of my invention an embodiment of which-is shown in the, ac-
- companying drawing-to which reference will now be had. I 7
Figure 1 is an elcvational view of the improved tube and cap in detached relation.
i Application filed June 8f1927. Serial No. 197,393.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the assembly. .The lnvention is illustrated in connection withthe practice which involves a metal film-or seal requiring a piercing element to destroy it.
According tojmy invention, the breast portion 5 0t thetube is; formed with a straight cylindrical nozzle 6 having; two external diaineters,---in that its basal part or Where it joins'the breast is formed as an annular olfset or shoulder-7 whereof the perimeter 1s smooth finished.
The'piercing element has a depending annular Wall or skirt 8 forming a cap or thin]- ble closure, the interior of which is smooth finished. The internal diameter of the cap exceeds the external diameter of the nozzle" proper in order to provide for full clearlance. and is a trifle less than the diameter of the shoulder 7 to insure-abinding or ground fit thereon; Evidently the cap is substantially completely in place before it.
meets with resistancefand merely requires slight turning movement to ridge orseat on the tube. A sealing disk 9 carried in the thimble'p'ortion completes the assembly.
bind it to the I-Iaving' described my invention, I claim:
A collapsible tube having an externally smooth stralght cylindrical nozzle formed with a smooth finished annularridge where it joins the breast of the tube, and a cap having a'straight cylindrical bore of a diameter to clear the nozzle and fit on the ridge. 7 v i In testimonywhereof I atfix'my' signature.
