Application filed January 9, 1928, Serial No. 245,561, and in France January 14, 1927.
The present invention relates to powder boxes and more particularly to those of the type designed to deliver small quantities ot' powder' from a main storage compartment according to the needs and desires of the user. I l
One of the objects of the invention is to simplify the construction of powder boxes of the special type hereinabove mentioned so that the number of parts is reduced to a minimum.
Another object is to provide an arrangement of parts which will take up a minimum amount of space.
A further object is to provide a form of construction in which the coacting parts of the box are free of projecting portions and interengage in a manner which prevents accidental openingr of the powder magazine.
Still further objects will appear 1n the course of the detailed description now to be given with reference to the accompanying drawings in which.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 4, there is shown a powder magazine comprising a ring member a closed at one end by detachable bottom member b and at its other end by a perforated plate o resting on the upper surface of rin member a and free to rotate thereon. erforations 0 are punched through plate c so as leave at least part of the Arough turned under edges in place. The peripheral portion Z of plate c extends into space m and coacts with a toothed member p rigidly mounted on a shaft g extending through casing n o. There are no projecting parts and accidental opening of the powder magazine is therefore impossible. In the form of device shown in Fig. 5, the various operating elements are similar to those shown in Figs. 1 to 4. Bottom member 7) is here arranged to have the form of a slide engaging flush with casing o. A recess b* permits the detachable bottom to be removed when desired. The bottom closure of the device shown in Fig. 6 is hingedly mounted on casing 0 at d and -is held in closed position by a spring latch d1. in this form of the device, as also in the device shown in Fig. 5, spring h shown in Fig. 1 is replaced by a star shaped spring 71.1 attached to false bottom e and engaging only by friction with bottom member b. To prevent rotation of false bottom e when plate c' is given an angular displacement, guides el are arranged to engage in an appropriately formed recess in e. The assemblies shown in any one of Figs. 1 to 6 are completed by a cover member z' hingedly mounted on the casing, a spring e? tending Ill() to move the cover towards open position, and a spring latch assembly j, y adapted to lock and release the cover member.
T he manner in which the device operates is as follows: Bottom member b together with false-bottom e are removed and powder f is poured into the receptacle. b and e are then forced into place, bringing powder f under compression against plate Q. To remove powder from the receptacle it suices to merely rotate (j, whereupon plate c cuts into powder f and brings a small quantity of the latter to the upper surface of plate c for use.
Devices of the type hereinabove described are known in which the number of constituent elements is considerably greater and in which bottom member b has salient portions which permit accidental opening of the powder compartment. The inventor does not pretend to be the first to devise a powder box provided with an angularly displaceable plate for feeding powder from a powder compartment but has improved such devices so as to (1) render them simple-r, more compact and more convenient for use, and (2) insure against accidental opening of the powder compartment.

A device of the class described comprising in combination a casing, a powder compartment located in saidv casing, a bottom closure for said compartment including a main bottom member adapted to engage with said casing, a false bottom member and resilient means interposed between said main and false bottom members; a rotatable perforated plate closing the to of said powder compartment and rotatab e means extending through the casing and engaging with said rotatable perforated plate, said rotatable means being adapted to move the perforated plate over the powder maintained under pressure in Contact with said plate by the resilient means interposed between the main and false bottom members.
2, A device of the class described comprising in combination a casing, a powder compartment located inside said casing, a bottom closure for said compartment includinga main bottom member adapted to engage with said casing, a false bottom member and a spring interposed between said main and false bottom members; a rotatable perforated plate closing thetop of said powder compartiment, said plate having openings formed therein adjacent the periphery thereof. a toothed member positioned to engage insaid openings and operable to give said perforated plate an angular displacement, and a rotatable shaft connected to said toothed member and extending through the casing, said rotatable shaft being operable to rotate the perforated plate over the powder maintained under pressure against said plate by the spring interposed between the main and false bottom members.
3. A device of the class described comprising in combination a casing, a powder compartment located inside said casing, a bottom closure for said compartment including a main bottoni member of lesser area than the area of the bottom of the casing, said main bottom member having means associated therewith for maintaining the same substantially flush with said casing when said member is in closed position, a false bottom member, and a spring interposed between said main and false bottom -members; a rotatable perforated plate closing the top of said powder compartment, said plate having openings therein adjacent the periphery thereof, a toothedmember positioned to engage in said openings and operable to give said perforated plate an angular displacement, and a rotatable shaft connected to said toothed member and extending through the casing, said rotatable shaft being operable to rotate the perforated plate over the powder maintained under pressure against said plate by the spring interposed between the main and false bottom members.
