IMPROVEMENT IN BOOTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,450, dated September 7, 1875 application filed July 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY HALL, of Pontiac, Oakland county, Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boots, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is an inside view of a portion of a boot-leg, showing my invention; and Fig. 2 is a detail crosssection of the same, taken through the line at m, Fig. 1.

The object of this invention is to furnish boots the legs of which shall beso made that the same cannot wrinkle, and at the same time shall be soft and pliable, and will not hurt the ankles or impede walking.
The invention consists in the combination of the front, the back, the supporters D, the flat wires or whalebones with each other, in forming the seams of boot-legs, in substantially the manner hereinafter fully described.
A represents the front, and B the back, of a boot-leg. O are the supporters, which are pasted upon the inner surface of the front A and back B along their edges, and all sewed to said front and back with a waxed-thread machine down to the top of the counter D before the seam is closed. The edges of the front and back A B, the edges of the supporters O, and the welt E are then sewed together. The ends of the counter D are then laid over the lower parts of the seam, and the rows of stitches that secured the supporters O to the front and back A B are continued, securing the ends of the counter D to said front. The boots are then made in the ordinary way. F are fiat wires made of steel, whalebone, or other suitable materiaLwhich are inserted beneath the supporters 0, between the rows of stitching and the seam, and are secured,when made of steel, at their upper and lower ends by rivets G, the said wires being of such a length as to extend from the top of the bootleg to a little below the top of the counter D, as shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described myinve11tion,Iclai1n as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the supporters G, welt E, and flat wires or whalebones F with the front A, back B, and counter D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
