MANIOURING FILE.

This invention relates to manicuring instruments, and especially to a manicure or nail file provided with means for removing foreign material from beneath the nails.

Practically all manicure files commercially sold at this tome are provided with a pointed tip at one end, which tip often causes damage to clothing when the file is carried in the pocket. In the commercial form of file above referred to the longitudinal edges must be tapered to permit the tip to be formed in a convenient shape for utilization to remove dirt from beneath the nails. The tapering of these longitudinal edges adds materially to the cost to manufacture.

It is an object of my invention to provide an improved manicuring file provided with eflicient means for dislodging dirt from beneath the nails and capable of being manufactured at relatively low cost.

It is a further object to provide a manicuring file which may be formed from a continuous elongated strip of material having a recess formed in a longitudinal edge thereof to produce a laterally disposed pointed portion adapted to remove dirt from the nail. V

Another object is to provide a manicuring file which may be carried in a pocket without injuring clothing or the person carrying the file. v

These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and in which:

My maniouring file is referably formed from an elongated strip of suitable material, such as steel, cut a suitable length for convenient manipulation. The longitudinal edges a, it will be noticed, are parallel and an arcuate shaped recess Z) is cut in one longitudinal edge extending inwardly into the body of the file, thereby forming a prong or .pointed portion 0 adjacent the outer end of the file, which is adapted to be utilized in the manner shown in Fig. 2 to scrape or dislodge foreign material from beneath the nails. A portion of the body of the file d is roughened for filing the nails and, it will be noticed that the same strip of material constitutes the filing portion and provides. the'laterally extending'prong 0. It will also be noticed that the point of prong c is slightly rounded and is disposed inwardly of the longitudinal edge a.

In operation the filing portion is, of course, utilized in the well known manner for wearing down the edges of the finger nails. To dislodge dirt and foreign material the body of the instrument is grasped in one hand and disposed edgewise in reference to the under surfaceof the nail, prong 0 extending beneath the nail and recess Z) accommodating the rounded tip of the finger. The file is then moved laterally and edge The longitudinal edge an adjacent prong c furnishes a protective guide to prevent the tip clothing when the file is carried in the pocket. In most files'the pointed end or tip will soon penetratethe pocket or tear the clothing, and is likely to cause injury if a person falls with the said tip disposed towards the body.-

In manufacturing mydevice a continuous strip of material may be cut laterally. to form 0 from engaging or penetrating the the body of the file, the handle end rounded on a grinding wheel and the filing portion roughened. It is then only necessary to stamp or grind out the recessed portion, which forms the prong 0.

It will be seen from the foregoing description that I have invented an extremely simple but efficient manicuring file having several important advantages over files 1n commercial use at this time.

It will, ofcourse, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of parts without departing from the scope of the invention.

A manicuring instrument comprising an elongated body provided with parallel edges and terminating in an end normal to said edges, one of said edges having an arcuate of the finger, said prong terminating at a" point disposed inwardly of the longitudinal edge on which the notch is formed, and a roughened surface on said body constituting 1 a file.
