UNITED STATE 5.
J'QSEPH PLATT, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
. PASS TRAY.
Application filed April 22,
My invention relates to a pass tray and an object of my improvements is to provide a movable receptacle by which money or valuables may be transmitted through a bullet proof partition without exposing an operator to an assault by a robber.
I accomplish this object in the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which V Figure 1 is an outside elevational view of an apparatus embodying my invention and parts adjacent thereto.
Figure 2 is a section of the same perpendicular to the partition.
Figure 3 is a section of the tray on the line 3, 3, Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detail section showing the pivotal connection of the tray.
Figure 5 is a detail section on the lines 5, 5,-Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a section similar to Figure showing a modified construction of the cover,
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the cover of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the stationary portion J of the cover of Figure 2.
Y is a counter, and K a partition of bullet proof material. In the partition K, just abovethe counter Y and below a window is formed a rectangular opening of convenient size, generally extending for the breadth of the cashiers window.
Fitting in said opening is a tray X of the size and shape in cross section of the opening through the partition K. This is also made of bullet proof material and has a fiat portion which is vertical in the normal position and forms a part of the partition K. The tray X has two end plates and a bottom plate which is contiguous with the lower edge of said vertical ortion, extends inward and bends upward s antingly terminating in an inner edge that is horizontal and somewhat below the upper edge of said flat portion.
The tray X is pivoted to turn about an axis Z at its lower left hand corner and a stop V is provided to limit its inward motion of rotation.
J is a plate secured at its inner edge to the partition K and extending inward therefrom part Way over the open end of the tray X. R is a cover extending from the inner edge of said tray to and just beneath 1926. Serial No. 103,820. I
the inner edge of the plate J. The cover R is movable and may slide in the waysindicated at the edges of thesideplates of the tray X. Both the plate J and coverbR should be of transparent bullet proof material. I
v The method of operating the "above described -device is as follows:
The cover B, being in the position shown in Figure 2 and the customer Wishing to pass an object to the cashier, the tray :1s
tion to extend intothe interior of the tray X, as shown in Figure 6, so that a weapon cannot be used by a person outside of the partition against a person'inside of said partition.
What I claim is: g
1. In an apparatus of the kind described, the combination of a bullet-proof partition having an opening therethrough, a bulletproof receptacle filling said opening'open at the top and movable from one side of said partition to the other through said opening, means for constraining the motion of said receptacle in said opening, said receptacle having sides one of which closes said opening at one limit of the travel of said receptacle and the other of said sides closes said opening at the other limit of the travel of said receptacle, and a cover for said receptacle closing said opening during the intermediate travel of said receptacle.
2. In an apparatus of the kind described, the combination of a. bulletproof partition having an opening therethrough, a bulletproof receptacle filling said opening open at the top and movable from one side of said partition to the other through said opening, means for constraining the motion of said receptacle in said opening, said receptacle" having sides one of which closes said opening at one limit of the travel of said receptacle and the other of said sides closes said opening at the other limit of the travel of said receptacle, and a transparent cover for said receptacle closing said opening during the intern'iediate travel of said receptacle.
3. In an apparatus of the kind described, the combination of a bullet-proof partition having an opening therethrough, a bulletproof receptacle lilling said opening open at the top and movable from one side of said partition to the other through said opening, means for constraining the motion of said receptacle in said opening, said receptacle having sides one of which closes said opening at one limit of the travel of said receptacle and the other of said sides closes said opening at the other limit of the travel of said receptacle, and a cover movable from the inside oi said partition for said receptacle closing said opening during the intermediate travel of said receptacle.
4. In an apparatus of the kind described, the combination of a bullet-proot partition having an opening thcrcthrough, a bullctprooi' receptacle filling said opening open at the top and movable from one side o'l said partition to the other through said opening, means for constraining the motion of said receptacle in said opening, said receptacle having sides one of which closes said opening at one limit of the travel of said receptacle and the other ol said sides closes said opening at the other limit of the travel of said receptacle, and a cover secured to said partition and extending part way over said receptacle and a cover secured to said receptacle over the part of said receptacle lcl't uncovered by the lirst mentioned cover.
5. In an apparatus of the kind described, the combination of a bullet-proof partition having an opening therethrough, a bulletproof receptacle lilling said opening open at the top and movable l'rom one side 01" said partition to the other through said opening,
means for constraining the motion of said receptacle in said opening, said receptacle having sides one of which closes said opening at one limit of the travel of said receptacle and the other of said sides closes said opening at the other limit of the travel of said receptacle, and a bullet-proof transparent cover secured to said partition and extending part way over said receptacle and a cover secured to said receptacle over the part of said receptacle lel't uncovered by the tirst mentioned cover.
(5. In an apparatus of the kind (l(.'t'!il)0(l, the combination of a bullet-proof partition having an opening therethrough, a V-shaped bullet-proof receptacle open at the top and having its lower edge pivoted at the lower edge ol? said opening and being adapted to turn about said pivot through :aid opening. and a cover extending over the upper end ol. said receptacle while it is turning through said opening. v
T. In an apparatus of the kind described, the combination of a bullet-proof partition having an opening therethrough, a V-shaped bullet-proof receptacle open at the top and having its lower edge pivoted at the lower edge ol said opening and being adapted to turn about said pivot through said opening, and a cover extending over the upper end of said receptacle while it is turning through said opening, said cover consisting o l' a part secured to said partition and extending part way over said receptacle, and a part secured to said receptacle and extending over the part of said receptacle not covered by the lirst mentioned cover.
8. Claim 7 when either of said covers is of transparent material.
In testimony whereof, I. aliix my signature.
