SCAFFOLD- Application filed August 27, 1927. Serial No. 2 15, 851.
This invention relates to improvements in scaffolds adapted to be used. by masons, painters and the like, and has particular reference to a scaffold of this kind having improved means whereby it may be raised by persons within or upon the framework of the building.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a device of the above kind having a minimum number of operating parts and embodying such simple and durable construction as to meet with the requirements for a successful commercial use.
A still'further. object is to provide means whereby the platform of the scaffold may be readily leveled transversely preparatory to raising the same. v
Other objects will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better under-v stood, and the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, 5 indicates the framework of a building, and suspended at each end from the top of the building by means of a hoisting device is a scaffold platform 6.
As the hoisting devices are alike, description of one will suffice for'both. Asshown, each hoisting device embodies a frame composed of a pair of beams 7 rigidly connected in spaced parallel relation, as at 8, and
preferably consisting of channel beams with inwardly projecting flanges. This frame is suitably secured, as at 9, to the top of the building so as to project a distance beyond the front of the latter, and secured at their lower ends to the outer sides of the inboard ends of the beams 7 are spaced pairs of uprightslO and 11 in the upper ends. of which are journaled the shafts of winding drums 12 and 13. These drums have pairs of similar end spur gears 14, and 15 engaged by pawls 16 and 17 whereby the drums may befreely turned in one direction but will be prevented from turning in the opposite di rection unless the pawls. are released. As shown, the pawls are rigid with transverse horizontal operating shafts respectively journaled in extensions 18 of the uprights 10 and in uprights 19 secured to the beams 7 outwardly of drum 13.
A further pair of uprights 20;are secured to the beams 7 between theuprights-lO and 11, and slidably and rotatably mounted in the upper ends of these/uprights- 20 is a shaft "21' having end operating cranks 22 and on which are secured elongated spur pinions 23 arranged between and adapted to simultaneously mesh with the gears 14 and 15. The uprights 10 are laterally offset; in one direction as shown in F iguress3 and 7, while the uprights 11 are offset in the other direction, as shown in Figures 3 and 8, thus positioning the gears 14:- and '15 out'of alignment. The uprights 20 are, however, laterally offset away from each other as shown in Figures- 3 and 5, thus leaving spaces between the same and the pinions. 23 when the latter areengaged with the gears 1 1 and 15, whereby the shaft 21 may he slid laterally of the beams 7 to disengage the pinions23 from the gears 14 while remaining engaged with gears 15 or to disengage them from gears 15 while remaining engaged with gears 14. In tl1is' way,.either winding drum may be disconnected or freed from the operating shaft and the other drum for independent actuation, thus enabling any slack to be taken up in either of the cables 24 or 25 for transversely leveling the scaffold platform 6 preparatory to raising the latter. The cable 24 is attached to drum 12 and passes outwardly over a guide pulley 26 supported by uprights 27 attached to the outboard ends of thebeams 7, the
.lower ends of the cable 24 being attached to the outer side of platform 6. In a like manner, cable is attached to the drum 11.3 and the inner side of platform 6, the same passing-over a guide pulley 28 supported by shorter uprights 29 secured to the bean 7 inwardly of the uprights 27. It is ten apparent that by turning. shaft 21 with pinions 23 engaging gears lland 1:5, both drums may. be turned at a corresiimnchng speed to. wind the cables 24 and 25 thereon and. raise the end. of the scaffold 1')latfor1n while preserving the trai'isverse level of the latter. A corresponding operation of the other hoisting devicefor the other einl of the platformwill resultin raisingthe latter whilepreserving its level longitudinally.
If desired, suitable releasable means may be provided to prevent accidental longitude nal shifting of shaft 21 transversely of the frame whenpinions. 23 are 'in engagement with gears 14 and 15, and such means is shown :as embodying chock members 3 pivoted to the uprights 20 and adaptedto be swung to or from between the pinions 28 and the uprights 21, the chock meu'ibers 30 being slotted, as at 31, to fit over shaft 2 when operatively disposed and having suitable handles 32. If desired, the shafts 21 of) the twohoisting devices may be coupled for causing the operation of one hoisting device by the other.
As shownbetter in Figur'es a and (5, the platform 6 may embody boards'laid across end transverse beams 38 andheld together between the :cables 2% and 25 as well as held down by cross plates 34: disposedacross the upper surfaces of the boards.- The cables are passed through the ends of the plates and anchored to the adjacent ends of thebeams 33, as at35.
In operating the device to lift the platform, the cranks 22 are turned, thereby imparting rotation simultaneously at the same rateof speed to the drums 12 and 13 and winding up the two cables at the same rate so that the platform will not be laterally tilted.
