Description
UNITED STATES PATENT (Demon.
EPHRAIM H.. ADAMS, OF LYKENS TOWNSHIP, CRAWFORD COUNTY, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAND-ROLLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 67,380, dated September 7, 1875; application filed April 8, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPHRAIM H. ADAMS, of Lykens township, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Land-Rollers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan view of all its parts. Fig. 2 is bracket I, attached to F and G. Fig. 3 is a section of the plate P as attached-to roller 0 and side J. Fig. 4 is a plan of the draw-bar T.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The object and purpose of my improved roller are to allow the separate rollers the means of a limited adjustment on the central draftrods T T, so as to each separately follow the inclination of the ground over which it passes, the front roller acting independently of the rear ones, and rolling as required by the loose coupling of the clevis, by which the rear rollers are attached thereto.
I construct my rollers as follows-that is to say, of wood, by putting on staves or strips to the circular ends 0 in any suitable manner. On the said circular ends 0 I securely fasten a plate, P, of which. Fig. 3 is a section. The pin K is driven tightinto ahole prepared for it therein, and the flanges being bolted thereto, the journal M is embraced by the two halves of the cast-iron journal box N, the upper half of which is secured to the ends of the sides J J, which form part of the several frames F G H, and the lower half is bolted thereto. front of the two rear rollers, is also of wood,
The cross-bar D, which stands in and the coupling-piece E is gained into the under side thereof. At the inner ends of the frames F G, which embrace the rear rollers, I put a bracket, I, with a lip bent at each end, for the purpose of preventing the roller raising or lowering beyond the limit assigned to it. I insert my tongue in the under edge of the front frame H, secured there by bolts passing through the same. Through the frames F and G I place a draft-rod, T T, on which the said frames may have a rotary motion, for the purpose of accommodating themselves to any ground and over any obstructions. Through the front frame H I put an eyebolt, L, through which the clevis Q passes, and the bolt R passes through the couplingpiece E and secures the clevis thereto. The draw bar or rod T is made with a wide flange to bolt it to the cross-bar D. The remaining part of the rod is round, so as to allow free play of the frames F and G thereon within the limit allowed by the bracket I.
I do not claim any novelty in the construction of the rollers, neither in the manner of their adjustment in the frames, or in the manner of attaching the rear to the front frame, or in the manner of attaching the tongue to the front frame.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, whatI do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The stop-plates I I, in combination with the pivoted roller-frames F G and transverse bar D, as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand this 26th day of March, A. D. 1875.
EPHRAIM H. ADAMS.
Witnesses:
JOHN GWYNN, H. O. KEPPEL.
