CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
onsrme DEVICE.
Application filed Jul so, 1927. Serial No. 269,473.
This invention relates to improvements in casting devices, and moreespecially to die casting devices in which air is exhausted from the die so that atmo heric pressure forces the molten metal into he die cavity.
In devices of this kind, it frequently is necessary or desirable to make the die of several arts. This is sometimes necessary so that t e casting can be removed from the die without destroying the same. When the die is made up of several parts ordinarily there are a'irleaks between the parts. Consequently, if the air is exhausted from the die at one point, there is danger of leakage of air into the die at other points with consequent injury to the casting.
Y The principal feature of my invention is the provision of an airtight container .in which the die is placed. A metal inlet is provided in the container into the die. Air is then exhausted from the container, with the result-that air escapes from the die into the container through every crack and interstic e in the die. It will be seen, therefore,
that all air leakage is from the interior of the die outwardly. Consequently, when the metal rushes into the die ,cavity it becomes completely filled, there being no air bubbles to spoil the casting.
Another feature of my invention is the making of the die container so that when the air is exhausted from the inside, the atmospheric pressure surrounding the same tends to hold the parts of the container together.
. Other features and advantages of my invention will appear more 'fully as I proceed with my specification.
In that form of device embodying the features of my invention Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view, F 1g. 21s a view taken as indicated by the line 2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 I
is a view taken as indicated by the line 3 of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation of the upper end of the device.
As shown in the drawings, 10 indicates a substantially cylindrical air tight die con- The lower end of themontainer 10 is provided. with a nipple 12 having an prifice 13 to permit entry of the molten metal. 14 indicates, in general, the die which is here shown as made up of three parts comprising the inner cylindrical core member 14:, the intermediate ring member 14 and the outer'ring member 14. 15
with each other.
suitable pipe connection 23 is noted, however, that the entire die is con? tained within the die container 10 and that such die container is air tight. It is to be understood that the parts 14*, 14", and 14 of the die do not form air tight connections Also, the outer member 14 of the die does not have an air tight fit inside of the container 10. A substantially air tight connection, however, is formed between the die and the upper end of the metal inlet nipple 12. This nipple, as here shown, extends up into the container and is provided with a shoulder 12. The lower end of the die member 14 is provided with an aperture as indicated by 10 to receive the upper end of the nipple 12 and the lower surface of the part 14 is adapted to seat on theshoulder 12. Means are provided for making a substantially air tight joint on this shoulder, such means comprise a rod 16 with a disk 17 on the lower end adapted to bear against the die. The rod 16 is pressed downwardly by means of the spiral spring 18. The cover 11 for the die container carries a tubular casing 19 in which the rod 16 and the spring 18 are housed.
20, 20. indicate two rods connected by a yoke 21 at their upper ends and provided with hooks 22, their lower ends adapted to engage the under side of a flange 10 at the upper edge of the die container 10. The

upper end of the tubular member 19 is pref- I erably closed by means of a plug 19 and 9. provided for exhausting air. I
24 indicates a lever pivoted beneath the yoke 21 by means of the pin 25 and provided with a cam shoulder 24 adapted to force the plug 19 and the casing 19 downwardly and pull up on the rods 20 when the lever 24 is in horizontal position as shown in Fig. 4. When the lever 24 is swung upwardly, to a vertical position the shoulder 24 is removed from the plug 19* and the rod 20 can be dropped to permit the hooks 22- to be released from the flange 10" so that the die container can be opened.
The lower surface of the disk 17 is pro vided with radiating slots 17 so that air escaping from the crack 26 between the mold members 14 and 14 is free to escape into the space 27 at the top of the die container.
In the operation of the-device, the lever 24 is operated to pull u on the hooks 20 and push downwardly on t e tubular casing 19 so that the cover 11 is firmly sealed on the die container 10. The rod 16 operates to force the die downwardly tight on the shoulder 12 of the metal inlet nipple to form an air seal. Air is then exhausted from the pipe 23 and tubular member 19 to exhaust air from the die container. This causes air to escape from the cavity 15 in the die through every crack and interstice in the die or between the parts thereof. The lower end of the nipple 12 is then inserted in the molten metal whereupon the flowing of the metal is sucked up through the orifice 13 into the cavity 15 to fill all parts thereof. It will be seen that when the air is exhausted from the interior of the die container atmospheric pressure will assistto hold the die container 10 and its cover 11 tightly together to assist in making the same air tight.
While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty in my invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.
7 What I claim is new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A casting scribed comprising an air tight die container with a metal inlet nipple'havihg a metal inlet orifice, said nipple projecting into the interior of the die container; 9, die inside of the die container provided with a metal inlet adapted to seat on the inner end of the metal inlet nipple in the die container, said die having air communication between its cavity and the interior of the die container; and means for exhausting air from the interior of the die container.
2. A casting device of the character described comprising; a die container with a metal inlet orifice; a cover for the die container; a die inside the container having a metal inlet adapted to seat tightly around the metal inlet orifice of the die container, said die having air communication between its cavity and the interior of the die container; a' clamp for holding the cover on the die container; spring means operating in connection with said clamp to press the die down to cause its metal inlet to seat tightly around the metal inlet orifice of the die container when the clamp is tightened; and means for exhausting air from the die container.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of July, 1927.
JOHN LE MAY.
