W. W. HARRIS SOAP STICK AND HOLDER Filed April 13f 1921 4 B 'lL I INVENTOR, I W I 4 ATTORNEY Patented June 12, 1928.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM W. HARRIS, OF NEWPORT, NEW JERSEY.
SOAP STICK AND HOLDER.
Application filed April 13, 1921.
My invention relates particularly to soap sticks and holders for same, especially of the type in which the holder forms the body part of the soap stick container.
A principal object of the invention is to provide simple means whereby the stub end of a used soap stick is automatically positioned and retained on the usable end of a new stick when the latter is inserted in the holder, thus effecting the economy of using the entire stub without any inconvenience whatever to the user.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a holder of ample gripping proportions and which also serves to form a considerable portion of the container thus reducing the expense of the container as a whole.
Another further object of the invention is to provide simple and sanitary clamping means within the holder by which the soap stick is readily retained in any desired position and which is of such a nature as to be non-corrosive and otherwise innocuous to the soap stick, thereby rendering it unnecessary to protect each stick of soap with waxed paper, tinfoil or the like. The doing away with the necessity of such wrappings is not only of great economic importance but also eliminates a source of much inconvenience to the user, as wrappings of such nature become imbedded in the soap by continued pressure of the fingers or by the pressure of the retaining means sucha-s used in other holders heretofore suggested in the art.
Further objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description and accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation partly broken away, of a full-length shaving stick and its holder embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the clamping element shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central sectional View of the holder proper and its cover and cap, but showing the soap stick used to the limit ofthe holder proper;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal central sectional view, of the holder proper and its cover, the soap stick being further reduced to a stub and a fresh full-length soap stick being shown in an initial position of insertion; and 1 Fig. 5 is a longitudinal central sectional view, similar to Fig. 4, but showing the fresh full-length soap stick fully inserted with the soap stub anchored thereon.
Serial No. 460,991.
Referring to the drawings, the holder proper 1 is provided with the forward opening 2 through which projects the soap stick 3. The cover 4t is shown closed at its outer end 5 and adapted to be frictionally or otherwise secured at its open end 6 about the forward end 2 of the holder proper 1.
The holder proper 1 is provided. with the open rearward end 7 and is provided with external threading meshing with corresponding internal threading of the cap Such forward end portion 2 of the holder proper 1 is forwardly inwardly tapered as of frusto-conical or like contour and coacting therewith is provided the split tube 9 of cardboard or like material which is innocuous to soap. Such cardboard 9 may be cut from flat stock and turned to form a slitted tube and is of such length that its forward end is, forced within the clearance between the tapered end 2 of the holder proper 1 and the soap stick 3 and abutting at its, rearward end against the inner face of the flange of the cap 8, whereby upon tightening the cap 8 the soap stick 3 is clamped at the forward end 2 of the holder proper 1.
, Preferably the holder proper 1 is provided with the beading 10 to facilitate gripping manually of the holder proper and which also serve as a stop for the edge of the open end of the cover 4:.
- The holder proper 1 may be beaded at 11 similarly to facilitate gripping of the same; the cover 4 may be provided at 12 with a heading for ornamental or other purposes.
Preferably, the cover 4 is lined with the inner tube 13 of paper or the like and may be permanently positioned therewithin.
The soap stick 8 is shown of full length in Fig. 1, namely approximately of a length extending from the inner face of the cap 8 to the inner face of the top 5 of the cover 1.
Such soap stick 3 is formed with the projection 1 1, preferably of tapering conical contour and having the rounded outer edge 15 and the inner fillet portion 16. At its opposite end the soap stick is formed with the recess 17 of general cylindrical contour. The soap stick with its forward projection 14 and its rearward recess 17 are usually formed by molding the same in proper molds, as will be understood.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the soap stick 3 used up to approximately that limited by the forward end portion 2 of the holder proper 1. In order to progress the unused portion of the original soap stick 3 forwardly. the cap 8 is loosened to thereby permit the clamping tube 9 to be released manual y or otherwise from frictional engagement with the soap stick 3, and upon passing a finger through the open end of the cap 8 the soap stick is pushed forwardly until it abuts against the inner face of the top 5 of the cap 4, whereupon the cap 8 is now tightened to move the clamping tube 9 again to its clampinc position. I
The soap stick is now prepared for further use and in Fig. ll have shown the same used down to the stub indicated at. 16, comprising substantially an annular ring of soap and the recess 17 of the original. soap stick now 0:;- tends through such stub 16. A fresh soap stick 3 is now pushed through the open end of the cap 8, passed through the split tube 9 until the projection 1-l" of the fresh soap stick 3 is fully entered into the annular opening 17 to anchor the stub 16 onto the fresh soap stick 3", and the fresh soap Si" is progressed still further forwardly of the holder proper 1 carrying the stub 16 air chored on the projection M, as indicated in Fig. 5, whereupon the cap 8 is again tightened to move the clamping ring 9 to its clamping position.
The rounded forward portion 15 of a fresh soap stick facilitates entry of its projection within the annular opening of the. stub of the previous soap stick. The fillet functions as a wedge with the rearward edge of the annular stub in the operation of anchoring the stub on the fresh soap stick.
As will be noted, the cardboard clann'iing element serves to obviate the need of wax pin per, metal foil, or other wrapping for the soap stick as is required in shaving stick holders heretofore proposed. The clamping member in the form of a split ring serves also to adjust itself automatically to varying diameters or other irregularities of soap sticks, incident to molding. The cap 8 may be of the closed end type if desired. in which case the cap is manually removed from the rearward end of the holder proper 1 when progressing forwardly the unused portion of a soap stick and when inserting a fresh soap stick within the holder.
My invention is advantageous in avoiding loss of soap inthat the clamping is effected by pressure alone and directly against the soap stick without any intermediate wax paper, or foil or the like.
The invention is also advantageous in that the clamping ring or other clamping element disposed solely within the holder proper and carried wholly by the holder proper. hen the shaving stick holder is entirely disassembled there are but three loose parts which are readily replaced in their respective assembled positions.
.Vliercas l have de-cribed my invention by reference to specific fornr: thereof it will be understood that many changes and modili cations may be made without departing from the spirit of the invcrtion.
I claim:
1. .t soap stick holder compri:-'ir. 15 a inbular holder of metallic material and provided with a contracted forward open end and a movable strip of ardboard serving as a wcdging element. in coaction with said conlractcd forward end. said st rip of cardboard being freely folded about a circular stick of soap and disposed about. substantially' the whole of the inner face of the holder and for all its positions retained within the hold or to engage the inner surface of said tubular holder and including the inner surface of said contracted forward end. said tubular holder having an open rearward end to afford access manually to the rearward end of the stick of soap.
A soap stick hohler comprising a tubular holder of metallic material and provided with a conically contracted forward open end and a movable strip of cardboard serving as a wedging element in eoaction with said conically contrzurted fm'ward end. said strip of cardbmird being freely disposed within said tubular luldcr and for all of its positions wholly within said tubular holder. said strip of cardboard being folded to surround a circular stick of soap when disposed within said tubular holder and to wholly cngage the inner surface of said tubular holder and includingthe inner surface of said conirally contracted forward end. said tubular holder having an open rearward end to afford access manually to the rearward end of the stick of soap.
In testimony whereof I. have signed this s 'ieciticat-ion this 8th day of April. 1921.
