- Application filed October 11, 1926. Serial No. 140,942
This invention relates to a collapsible garment hanger, composed of two short U- shaped sheet metal bodies connected the one to the other by va hinge, an elastic fork being inserted in each body so that it can be shifted in longitudinal direction between two stops, one of said'forks having at the outer endthe hook and the other one the bu'tton hole for thefgarmentto be suspended, i. e. the trousers. According to the invention a safety` device is provided designed to ensure the accurate joining of the edgesof the U-armsof the two bodies when the'gar.- ment hanger is being unfolded to adapt the posit-ion of use, and further a locking device for securely holding the two bodies in the position of use, and means for stilfening the two arms of the U-shaped fork of each body at the hinge point, the suspension lhook being constructed to serve as hinge pin.
Anembodiment of the invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 shows in a central longitudinal section the garment hanger in'the position of use,
Fig. 2 is a cross section on line lI--I of Fig. 1, on largerscale.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 1 viewed from below.
Fig. 4 shows in side elevation the garment hanger collapsed.
Fig. 5 is a similar view as Fig. 4 turned 90. i
The two elements or bodies 1 and 2 of the garment hanger are of substantially U- shaped cross section, the edges of the arms being bent inward. 'IheA two elements 1, 2 are connected the one to the other by a hinge 3.' The U-a-rrns of the two elements are larger at the inner ends than at the outer ends. In each of the hollow bodies 1 and 2 an elastic fork 4, 5 is inserted, the arms of which have the tendency to spread away the one from the other so that they press onto the side arms of the hollow bodies. Each fork is shiftable in the corresponding body between two stops 6 and 7, in opposition to the fixation produced by the elastic pressure of the fork arm upon the of angular cross sectiondixed onthe inner fl surface of the back of the hollow body, the outer' stop 7 `being' formed bytwo flapsbent inward from the edge of each arm ofthe corresponding body. v The arms of each forltr 4 the innerend at 8 and 9 (Fig. 5) at right angles in inward direction-andthese inwardly bentl ends abut in the two extreme positions ofthe fork against `the .stops 6 or 'T and 5 are benty at respectively. .To the outer web of fork 5a lug 1() is attached, a hook 11 being suspended to the outer webof the other fork 4E A pair of' `.trousers can be suspended in Athewell known manner into the lug-10 and hook 11.

- The arms ofthe U-shaped cross .section of the elements 1 and2 are out at the hinge point` so that, if the two elements orv bodies 1, 2 join in the position of use, the edgesy 12 and 13 of the joining elements forma convenient angle, as shown in Fig. 1. In order that .the edgesof the. two elements come accurately into .contact theflonev with the other the element 2has on the lcontact edge of each arm .a .flap 14 which is lfixed 4in .close proximity to the hinge Sby a rivet 15 on the corresponding arm of the'U-shapedtro'ss, section and partly overlaps the contact, edgev 12 and projects over the edge ofthe arm of the U-shaped cross section. This projecting portion of flap 14 forms a guide for the contact edge of the arm of the opposite element. At the inner end of each arm of the element 2 of U-shaped cross section an inwardly bent nose 16 is arranged designed` to come into engagement with a notch 18 in the corresponding flap 14 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. On the end of each arm of the: element 1 a similar nose 17 is arranged, said noses 17 engaging with the notches 18 of the flaps 14 when the two elements of the garment hanger are in the position of use, the flaps yielding ela-stically in outward directions. The two elements of the garment hanger are thus secured in the position of use, and to release the same a-pressure has to be exerted upon the projecting portions of the flap 14.
In order to prevent yielding of the arms.l of each element 1, 2 of U-shaped cross section at the inner ends in outward direction inwardly bent opposite flaps 19, 2O of said arms are connected the one to the other, as
closely as possible tothe contact edges 12, l
