IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,282, dated August 31, 1875; application filed October 5, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SIGOURNEY WALES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Lever- Buckles, of which the following is a specification:

My invention consists in such a construction of the buckle that it may be readily removed from and placed upon the strap, and at the same time present a perfectly-finished appearance, the unused end of the strap being concealed beneath the leaf of the lever when closed.

My invention further consists in an improved construction of the base-plate in such lever-buckles, whereby it is made to furnish an elastic or springing surface beneath the cam.

My invention further consists in so indentin g or raising the base-plate beneath the camlever as to afi'ord a friction-surface for the material to be held.

Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved buckle. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view. Fig. 4 is the reverse. Fig. 5 is the lever B, for attaching the strap. Fig. 6 is the lever O, with thumb-plate, which is common in all lever-buckles. Fig. 7 shows a slotted buckle, (see Fig. 1,) with material D inserted beneath the lever 0. Fig. 8 represents the lever B open, and the strap L beneath it,

ready to be shut in and secured by the teeth in the short arm. Fig. 9 represents lever B closed upon the material L. Fig. 10 is a sectional view, showing lever B with the strap closed in and concealed without the use of the fold K. Fig. 11 represents a buckle with a portion of the cam cut away to show the baseplate, which is cut, as at F, without removing any of the metal, in order to afiord a yielding bed.

Like letters in the several drawings represent like parts.

In Figs. 1, 2, 4, and '7 the base-plate and sides are represented as slotted at F F, to admit the edge of broad pieces of material; but this feature I do not claim herein, it having been made the subject of an application filed by me on the 14th of February, 1874.

A is the spring-tongue or prolongation of the base-plate E, formed by the slots F F, or by the cuts F, which have the advantage that they do not remove any of the material, but preserve nearly the entire strength of the buckle. The tongue is stamped or punched up at G to form projections of friction-surface, which materially aids in securing the fabric or material beneath the cam. B is a lever, designed to secure the buckle to the fast end of the strap, and it is so formed as to entirely conceal the end of the strap, either being provided with the fold K, which shuts down over such end, or having its leaf H at a sharp angle with the toothed portion or arm, so that the leaf itself may shut down over the strap and conceal its end without loss of holding-power.

In operating the buckle, the lever O is thrown back and the material inserted, which passes beneath the hinges of the lever and over the tongue A. When the lever is replaced it presses the article against the tongue A, and, with the aid of the projection G, gripes it firmly.

The lever B operates like common buckle levers, only differing in the arrangement of the leaf H or the fold K, concealing the unused end of the strap.

I claim as my invention 1. In a buckle, the lever B, constructed as described, with leaf H, and with or without fold K, so arranged as to conceal the end of the material, substantially as set forth.

2. In a lever-buckle, the V-shaped projections .or indentations Gr, struck from the sheetmetal bed or tongue, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a lever-buckle, a bed-plate cut longitudinally without the removal of its substance, to form a spring-tongue, substantially as set forth.
