D. A. KELSEY.
Whip-Socket. No, 167,258, PatentedAug. 31,1875.

DENISON A. KELSEY, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT m WHIP-SOCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,258, dated August 31, 1875; application filed June 10, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DENISON A. KELSEY, or" Quincy, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whip-Sockets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs.
The invention relates to an improved whipsocket, which is hinged to the dashboard of a vehicle, or otherwise secured in proper position, and arranged so as to spring toward a cushion on the dash-board, for the purpose of holding the reins when placed between the socket and dash-board, or socket and cushion, and also for the purpose of affording a convenient and reliable means of holding the whip.
The figure herewith presented represents the device as placed horizontally, with the cushions in contact.
A in the accompanying drawings is a plate secured in any suitable manner to the dashboard, and provided with the cushion B, formed preferably concave, and of corrugated sheet metal, and elevated on one side, so as to more certainly effect its purpose. The whipsocket D is secured by the hinge E to the plate A, which permits the socket to swing toward the driver. A proper distance above the hinge is provided the coiled spring F, having a tension toward the dash-board. Above the spring the socket is provided with a cushion, H, preferably convex, and of similar material to the cushion B, opposite which it is placed, and with which it comes in contact when the spring retracts the socket.
The socket in the present instance is recessed, as shown, and has secured to the edge of the base of the recess the lower ends of the fingers I, which are curved, as shown, in a lily form, and, with the socket, serve as a catch to retain the Whip in place. The central one of these fingers, 1, extends to near the point of the recess to prevent the whip being thrust through the same. The lower portion of the socket is provided with apertures to permit the escape of water or filth.
The whip being in position, when it is de-' sired to secure the reins it is only necessary to grasp the whip above the socket, and draw it toward the seat of the vehicle. This separates the cushions B and H, and permits the reins to be introduced between them, when, the whip being released, the socket springs to place, and the reins are caught and held between the cushions.
It is obvious that the socket may be hinged directly upon the dash-board.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The socket D, hinged as specified, and
provided with the spring F, substantially as i set forth.
2. The cushions B and H, arranged and operating in the manner specified.
3. The combination of the socket D, spring F, and fingers I I, as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvements in whip sockets, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 5th day of June, 1875.
