ABDOMINAL SUPPORT AND JOCK STRAP.
Application filed March 3, 1926. Serial No. 91,902.
This invention relates to an article adapted to serve as and perform the functions of an abdominal support and jock strap.
Jock straps as usually constructed have a relatively narrow continuous elastic band or belt adapted to encircle the body of the wearer. Such a belt perform-s no body supporting or abdominal supporting function and, furthermore, since the elastic band or belt is stretched whenever the jock strap is put on or taken off, the belt soon loses its elasticity and the strap is useless.
Jock straps are usually worn by persons engaging in some athletic pursuit or contest and it is very desirable that the abdomen be supported, especially when the wearer leads a sedentary life and the abdominal. muscles have become flabby.
This invention has for its salient object 20 to provide in a single article a device so constructed as to perform the combined functions of an abdominal support and jock strap.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following specification taken in connection with the drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an article constructed in accordance with the invention;
Iiig. 2 is a front elevation of the article; an
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional elevation taken substantially on line 33 of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment of the invention illus trated, the device consists of a belt adapted to encircle the abdomen of the wearer and a strap 20 secured as hereinafter set forth to the belt intermediate the ends of the belt and adapted to extend. between the legs of the wearer in the mannerof the usual jock strap.
The belt 10 comprises two sections 11 and 12 of relatively wide, non-elastic, flexible material, such as a heavy grade of canvas. The ends 13 and 14 of the sections or strips 11 and 12are connected by a relatively short strip 15 of elastic material and a second strip 16 of elastic is secured at 17 to the other end of the section 12. The other edge of the strip 16 has secured thereto, books 18 adapted to engage loops 19 secured to the end 21 of the non-elastic section 11.
The strap may be of any desired shape and is secured at one end 25 to the section 11 of the belt intermediate the ends thereof and is secured at its other end at 26 to the section 12 intermediate the ends of this section.
The sections 11 and 12 of the belt are preferably formed of relatively stiff material and the junctions of these sections with the elastic stripsmay, if desired, be reinforced to stiffen the belt. In Fig. 3 it will be noted that the section of the belt is double in thick ness as shown at 30 and 31, the elastic strip 15 being enclosed between the outer and inner layers 30 and 31 of the section.
Attention is called to the fact that the elastic strips 15 and 16 are disposed at the sides of the article and this is desirable since it permits the belt to expand and contract where such expansion and contraction is most necessary, namely, at the sides of the wearer above the hips where the diaphragm expands and contracts in breathing. Furthermore, since the belt is buckled around the wearer, the elastic strips 15 and 16 are not stretched by pullingthe'belt over the hips as the article is put on or taken off.
Although one specific embodiment of the invention has been particularly shown and described, it will be understood that the invention is capable of modification and that changes in the construction and in the arrangement of the various cooperating parts may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, as expressed in the following claim.
What I claim is:
A combined abdominal support and jock strap consisting of a band comprising a pair of sections each formed of a single rectangular piece of relatively wide, non-elastic material, an elastic member of substantially the same width as said pieces secured to and connecting two of the ends of said sections, a second elastic member secured to another end of one of the sections, said sections and said elastic members being formed of relatively stiff material and the junctions of the sections With the elastic strips being reinforced to further stiffen the belt, quick detachable securing means comprising hooks and eyes for connecting the end of the second elastic member to the end of one section, a jock strap loop of non-elastic material secured "to said non-elastic sections intermediate 'theends'thereof, said 100p being formed of a relatively Wide portion at its junction with one of the non-elastic sections and with a relatively narrow portion at its 10 junction with the other non-elastic section.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set 1 'Iny'ha'nd this27day ofFfebrua'ry,19 26.
