PORTABLE GARBAGE CONTAIN EB.
Application fled November 20, 1920. Serial Ho. 149,707.
corner of the sink and when this garbage basket is filled to full capacity thehousewife conve s the basket to the garbage can which is o ten located in the basement. In doing this she often drops particles of the garbage during conveyance of the same to the garbage can and also her hands are caused to comeinto contact withthe garbage or refuse in the basket during conveyance of the garbage from the basket to the garbage can. Also these baskets are usual y of a reticulated construction and itwill be obvious that duringconveyance'of the garbage to the garbage can, water from the garbage will leak through the basket and soil the floor or the housewifes garments. therefore, one of the many objects of this invention to provide a sanitary garbage container which will permit the conveyance of the garbage or other refuse tothe garbage can without lacing ones hands in contact with the ar age or other refuse.
A still urther object of the invention is to provide a portable garbage container which supports a main receptacle or garbage bag for receivin the garbage or other refuse and whereb w en the receptacle or bag is filled to ful ca acity the bag and the garbage or other re use can be expeditiously and automatically discharged into the garbage can without garbage.
Other'objects will appear hereinafter.
' The invention consists in the novel combination and arranement of arts to be hereinafter describ and claimed.
placing the hands upomthe The invention will bebest understood by! "reference to the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of construction, and in which: a i

n the drawing 10 indicates a (resin which has an open top 11. The peripheredges 12 around the 0 en top 11 are turned nwardly to rovi e a frusto-conical shaped mouth 13 w ich functions to guide the garbage within the garbage bag.14 arranged within the receptacle in a manner hereinafter set forth.
The open top 11 of the casing v mallly closed a cover 15 which has depen in flanges 16 engaging over the periphera edge of the open top 11. This cover 15 has one of its flanges 16 hingedly connected to the adjacent side wall 17 of the casing 10 as at 18 and the cover includes a finger loop 17 which facilitates removing the cover from closing position. When the cover is in open position it is su ported in such position through the m ium of a bracket 19 secured at a redetermined pointv to the side wall 17. T e casing 10 is supported by feet 20' which are adapted to rest upon the stationary support. The lower end portion of the casing 10 is open as at 21 and the peripheral edges 22 defining the opening 21 are flared. outwardly as best shown in Fig. 2. The open bottom portion of the casing 10 is normally closed by oppositely disposed, leaves 23 which form the bottom of the casing 10. Theseleaves 23 have their adjacent edge portions 24 curled to eliminate shar edges.
The outer e ge portions 25 of the leaves 23 are hingedly connected to the adjacent side walls of the casing 10 through themedium of hinge elements 26.
When the leaves 23 are in closing position with respect tothe open bottom of the easing 10 these leaves function to support the bag 14 within the casinglO. These leaves 23 are held in such position through the medium of fingers 27 which are formed as an integral part of rods 28. These rods 28 are rotatably journaled in brackets 29 se cured to adjacent walls of the casing 10 as at .30. The rods 28 are held in proper relation with respect to the adjacent walls of the casing 10 through the medium of pins 31 which engage the brackets 29. It will be 10 is nor-- thus seen that the pins 31 prevent slidable movement of the rods 28 relative to the adjacent side walls of the casing 10.
The upper end portions 32 of the rods are formed to provide handle elements 33 which permit lifting of the garbage container. The said handle elements 33 extend substantially in a horizontal plane as best shown in F ig. 1.
g The leaves 23 are automatically forced from closing position with respect to the open bottom of the casing 10 through the medium of spring members 34 which spring members have correspondin end portions 35 enga ing the leaves 23 an opposite correspon ing end ortions 36 engagin the adjacent side wa ls of the casing 1 as best shown in Fig. 3. The rods 28 are limited in their rotation to dispose the fingers 27 into and from supporting position with respect to the leaves by means of pins 31' carried by the lower brackets of the brackets 29 and adapted for engagement with the pins 31 adjacent these lower brackets.
To insert the bag 14 within the container the handles 33 are firmly asped by the end and manually manipulate to rotate the rods 28 in their brackets 29 to dispose the fingers 27 from holding position with respect to the leaves 23. As soon as these fingers 27 are moved from holding position the spring members 34 automatically act upon the leaves 23 and move these leaves 23 from closing position with respect 'to the 0 en bottom of the container. The casin is t-ien laced on its side and the bag 14 inserted t erein with the open end of the bag disposed in a direction toward the open end of the casing 10. When the bag is properly inserted within the casing 10 the upper peripheral edge portion 11 thereof will be engaged between the peripheral edges 12 and the mouth 13. It will thus be seen that when arbage or other refuse is disposed in the ag 14 the garbage or other refuse can not gain entrance between the outer walls of the bag 14 and the inner surfaces of the casing 10. When the bag is thus positioned in the easing 10 the leaves 23 are disposed into closing position with respectto the open bottom of the casingand are then held in such position by rotating the rods 28 to dis ose the fingers 27 beneath the leaves 23. rom this it will be seen that when the fingers 27 are in engagement 'with the leaves 23, the leaves 23 with the cooperation of the fingers 27 function to effectively support the bag 14 within the casing 10.
When the bag 14 is filled to full capacity with garbage or other refuse and it is desired to discharge the garbage or other refuse from the casing it is only necessary to convey the container to the garbage can by firmly grasping the handle elements 33.
When the casing is disposed over the garbage can the rods 28 are rotated to disengage the fingers 27 from engagement with the leaves 23. This permits the spring 34 to antomatically open the leaves 23 and dispose the leaves 23 from'closing position with respect to the bottom wall of the casing 10. When this takes place the ba 14 will automatically drop from within the casing due to the weight ofthe garbage or other refuse. By the use of, the garbage container herein set forth it will be seen that the hands of the user donot come into contact with the garbage or other refuse and that the device when constructed in accordance with the drawings will provide a neat and sanitary port-able garbage container which may be placed beneath the sink or in some other convenient place.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carryin my invention into effect, this is capable o variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I,
therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope. of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a portable garbage container, a casing having an open bottom, leaf members hingedly connected to said casing at opposed oints along the lower edges thereof adapted to close said open bottom,- rod' members slidably rotatably mounted on the sides of said casing and having ortions extendin below said leaf sections a jacent the hinge connections thereof, said extending portions servin to move and hold said leaf sections into 0 osing position with respect to said open bottom of said casing.
2. In a portable garage container, a casin having an open bottom, -co-operating leaf members adapted to close said open bottom means for hingedly connecting said leaf members to said casing at opposed points, lugs secured to the sides of said casmg in alignment with said hinge means, rod members extending through openings in said In having handle portions at the upper en s thereof. said rod members includin I portions adapted to be extended below sai leaf sections at the hinged points thereof whereby said extended portions will serve to move and hold said leaf sections in closing position with respect to the open bottom of said casing.
