An object ofthe invention is to provide a grille capable of a Wide .range of utility, but linding one ofits preferred embodiments in awdevice for use on apartment doors.

An object of the invention isv to provide a device of this character which will permit the occupant of an apartment to'observe applicants lforentrance without opening the door, .to pay bills, or to carry on conversationV through the grille without'any danger ofv an intruder gaining entrance or inserting his hand through the grille to Open the door from the inside. The grille of the present invention representsa material improvement over the grille disclosed in myl copending application Serial N o.- 126,055; particularly in that the cost of kmanufacturing the grille has beeny materially reduced, and the Operation of attaching the grille to a door has been considerably simplified and facilitilted. Fig. 5 is a similar View illustratingk a fur- Referring first to .Figs.,1 to 3 inclusive of the drawings, I have used the reference numeral 10 to vdesignate a door, and 11 an opening preferably of circular shape which l.is cut in the door. `The grilles are' particularly suited vforuse in connection with thin metal lire-proof doors, and vare designed to 'comply with' all the requirements of the fire laws. An openingv frame;` vmember 12 is adapted to snugly fit within the opening 11 and includes a flanged portion `13 overlying the outer face of .the door. Frame memberl 12 is preferably integrally cross barred as at 14 andthe flange 13 is provided with suitable openings through which securing screws 4or equivalent securing .devices 15, are adapted to be passed. If desired, the screws may be passed through the radially extended ear, portions 16;.of the lange 13.

Projecting inwardly from the rear face of the ring 12 are a pair ofspaced ears .17 receiving between vthem, spaced ears 18 onv a circular closure plate 19. A hinge pin 2() passes through aligned pairs of ears 17 and 18 and the exposed intermediate portion of the hinge pin is preferably encircled by a coiled torsional spring 21 urging the closure plate 19 to closed position.

The portion of the closure 19 opposite its hinged portion carries a sliding bolt 22 mounted in a.y sleeve 23 integral with the closure and normally projected by a spring 24 pocketed in the inner end of the sleeve. The shank 25 of an operating handle 26 works in a slot 27 in the sleeve, and the pocket end of the bolt is provided with an inclined face-28 for coaction with a keeper Ideparting member Q9` onE thegring 12 inorder'that the bolt ma automatically latch `asthe closure is urged 'to closed position by the spring21.l
