This invention relates to a door or window adaptable for insertion in a panel, it being especially adapted for sight purposes and oral communication. A special field of utility is in association with panels of entrance doors for edifices, although not limited to such use. In such locations, the panel door may be opened to view the person on the outside of the house and the occupant may converse through the panel door opening with the person on the other side.

It is desirable to provide such a panel door structure which will have the following features: a structure capable of installation without requiring more than the provision of an opening in the panel for reception and attachment of the door panel; a panel door which is self contained; a panel door which may be constructed of metal and wherein the panel door jamb is formed as a part of the panel door frame; ease of installation, economy of construction and a structure which lends itself to ornateness.

These objects together with other objects and corresponding accomplishments are obtained by means of the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is an elevation showing a fragment of a panel with my improved panel door mounted therein; Fig. 2 is a section as seen on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a fragment of the panel with the inner and outer sections of the panel door frame separated and in position to be assembled.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, 5 indicates a door panel. An opening is formed therein for the reception of the panel door which is clamped to the marginal faces of the panel.

eral groove 8 adapted to receive the marginal edge of the panel 5 at the panel door opening. The plane of division between the sections is preferably at the groove 8. The abutting sections of the frame have flat faces 5 so that when the frame is assembled, there is in effect a unitary metal structure. EX- tending across the outer section 6 is a grill 9 to guard against intrusion. The inner section 7 has a recess 10 so as to provide a door jamb. Hinge ears 11' are provided on the inner side of the frame for the reception of hinge eyes 12, the latter being formed on the door 18. The door 13 is preferably of such thickness that when closed, its inner face is flush with the frame of the panel door. On the door is a pivotally mounted latch 14 to cooperate with a keeper 15 on the door frame.

In installing the door, an opening is cut in the panel 5. N 0 other mutilation of the panel is required. The inner section 7 is then placed in position with the flange of its recess resting against the inner face of the door panel. The outer section 6 is then similarly disposed on the outer side so that the 7 recess 8 receives the marginal edge of the opening; Screws 16 are then inserted to clamp the front and rear sections together and hold the panel door securely in position. As shown herein, bosses 17 are formed on the inner section through which the screw holes are bored. However, the screws for attaching the sections together may be inserted inother positions. The panel door is thus clamped securely in position and forms a self contained unit. The screws being on the inner side of the frame and covered by the door 13 when closed, are inaccessible.

What I claim is A three piece panel door unit comprising a relatively thin frame split in the plane of the frame to form cooperating outer and in her sections and having a door opening, a

peripheral panel receiving groove in said frame at the plane of juncture of said sections, the inner wall of the inner section of said frame being recessed on the front face to form a door jamb and having screw openings extending therethrough, a door for closure of said opening hinged to said frame so as to be flush with the frame when the door is closed, said outer section having a grill formed integral therewith and tapped screw bores, and screws in said openings and bores to secure said sections in abutting relation and to be covered by the door.
