UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PERRY GALE GOODRICK, OF FOND DU LAC, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOB '10 CANVAS PROD- UCTS CORPORATION, OF FOND DU LAC, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN.
CONTAINER.
Application filed February 1, 1926. Serial No. s5,111.
This invention relates to containers having a body portion of pliable material such as canvas and a metal bottom, and more particularly to means for securing these parts together.
In manufacturing containers of the character referred to, the practice heretofore has been to insert and fit one end of the pliable body portion Within the metal bottom member which is dish-shaped, and to pass rivets or similar fastening members through this end of the body portion and the sides of the bottom member to secure the parts together. This construction, while providing a strong and durable metal bottom for the container, has been objectionable for the reason that after continued and hard usage of the container the pliable body portion thereof, which is generally made of heavy cloth or canvas, tears away at the rivets and becomes separated from the metal bottom member. Another objection to this construction has been that the rivets or other fastening members rust through due to the action of air and water which Works its way down between the pliable material and metal bottom to the shanks of the rivets.
One of the objects of the present invention, therefore, is to provide improved means for securing together the parts of a container of the character referred to in such manner that the pliable body portion is prevented from tearing away from the metal bottom, and wherein the rivets are protected against the ,corroding action of air and water.
Another object is to provide an improved container of the character referred to wherein that part of the pliable. body portion through which the rivets or other fastening members pass is relieved of the strain and pull tending to separate the phable body portion from the metal bottom member therefor.
Anotherobject is to provide an improved container of the character referred to which has advantages over those constructed heretofore as regards simplicity of construction and durability.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
For the purpose of illustrating the inventlon, an embodiment thereof is shown in the drawlngs, in which F igure 1 is an elevational view, partly broken away;
F g. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary View, taken from Fig. 1; and
. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, show- In" a modified form.
Tieferring more particularly to Figs. 1 to 3, the body portion 1 of the container is made of pliable material such as heavy cloth or canvas, and is provided with a metal, dish-shaped bottom member 2 fitted into the lower end thereof in telescopic relation with respect thereto, the lower edge of the body portion being folded back upon and stitched to itself, to provide a pocket 3 for receiving a wire 4. A metal reinforcing band 5 1s fitted over the lower end of body portion 1 and about bottom member 2, as shown,'and is held in place by means of rivets 6 or other suitable fastening members, the latter passing through band 5, the lower end of body portion 1, and the bottom meniber 2. The parts are so assembled that the lower edge of band 5 engages the wire 4 pocketed in the lower edge of body portion 1 whereby the latter and bottom member 2 are locked together against axial displace ment away from each other, and the pliable material forming the body portion relieved from strain at rivets 6 to prevent tearing at this point which has occurred in containers of this type constructed heretofore.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a container'of the character referred to has been provided wherein the pliable body portion is relieved from strain at the rivets and prevented from tearing at this point, the construction being such that the strain or pull is evenly distributed around the body portion and the latter securely held in assembled relation with respect to the metal bottom therefor, and that the improved construction whereby this is made possible is simple and comparatively cheap.
The improved fastening means just described makes it possible to fit the canvas body portion over the dish-shaped bottom member without danger of the canvas or other material tearing, this arrangement providing against the entrance of water between the canvas material and the bottom member, which is possible in containers of this type constructed heretofore wherein the canvas body portion is placed inside of the bottom member. This entrance of water between the canvas material and bottom member, which is possible in these containers constructed heretofore, causes rotting away of the fabric and corrosion of the rivet shanks in a comparatively short time.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 4 the wire 4 is dispensed with, the lower end of the pliable body portion 1' being folded back upon and stitched to itself to provide a pocket 3' into which the reinforcing band 5' is inserted, the rivets or other fastening members 6' passing through the two layers of body portion 1 comprising pocket 3', band 5, and bottom member 2'. In this construction, the strain or pull tending to cause axial displacement of body portion 1' away from bottom member 2' is equally distributed where pocket 3' is engaged by the lower edge of band 5, rivets 6 acting merely to hold the arts in assembled relation.
While containers made in accordance with the present invention may be used for many different purposes, they are particularly adapted for use as the outer bag members or layers in the construction of insulated ice cream delivery containers of the type shown and described in copending applications Serial Numbers 733,282 and 4,647, filed August 21, 1924, and January 26,1925, respectively.
Several embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, but of course various changes in the size, shape and-arrangement of the parts may be adopted without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
The invention claimed is:
1. A container of the character described comprising a cylindrical body portion of pliable material, a metal dish-like bottom member fitted into one end of said body portion, the edge of said body portion at said end thereof being folded back upon and stitched to itself to provide a ocket, a wire arranged in said pocket a rein orcing band fitted over said end of said body portion and about said bottom member, and fastening means extending through said band, said end and said member to hold thesame in assembled relation, one edge of said band coacting with said wire to lock said body tion'and-said bottom member against axia' displacement away from each other.
2. A container of the character described comprising a body portion of pliable material, a metal dish-like bottom member fitted to one end of said body portion in telescopic relation with respect thereto, said body portion having a pocket around its lower end, a reinforcing element in said pocket, a band encircling the body portion and having an abutment cooperable with the reinforced pocket of th body portion and means for securing the band to the bottom member whereby the strain is distributed around the body portion through the coaction of the band and the reinforcing element of the pocket.
In witness whereof I hereto affix my signature.
