BOOK WRAPPER.

This invention relates to book wrappers particularly designed for wrapping books having paper covers, particularly heavy books, as mail order catalogues.

Mail order catalogues are usually bound in paper covers and after being bound are trimmed so that the edges of the leaves will be even, and are wrapped for distribution in paper wrappers and distributed to the public or to the trade by mail or by other usual distributing agencies.

The covers of the books are usually of considerable heavier and stronger paper than the leaves thereof and when the books are trimmed the edges of the covers are quite sharp and experience has shown that, in handling, the sharp edges of the covers are liable to cut the wrappers, thus not only preventing the catalogues or books from being delivered to destination, but also often resulting in serious damage to the books and loss to the distributor, not only through damage to the books, but by loss of business owing to the catalogue not being received.

The object of the present invention is to overcome this objectionable feature by providing a wrapper, comprising a reinforced portion which, in use, is adjusted over the free edges of the cover and leaves of the book. thus effectually preventing the wrapper from being cut and severed by the sharp edges of the cover. so that the book will be free to open and often resulting in the wrappers becoming detached from the hooks. thus preventing delivery of the books at destination.

In accordance with my invention, I attain the object of the invention by the use of a book wrapper consisting of a sheet of paper one end of which is folded to provide a portion of double thickness. which. as applied in use, is adjusted around the free edges of the cover and leaves of the book.

The invention also comprises the other various features and. details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.

Describing the invention with particular reference to the drawings, a, Fig. 1, indicates a wrapper of my invention designed and adapted for use in mailing books, particularly books with paper covers, as mai order catalogues.

In accordance with my invention, the wrappers when applied to the books, are adapted to be protected from being cut by the free edges of the book covers by folding back one end of the paper. as shown at 1the line of fold being indicated at a", Fig. 1.

The folded back end portions 1 of the wrappers impart a double thickness to portions 0 of the wrappers which. when said wrappers are folded around the books. are adiusted over the free edges of the leaves and covers of the books. the manner of applying the wrappers to the books. designated 7). being indicated in Figs. 3 to 6. inclusive. the doubled portions a of the wrappers being folded around the free edges of the hooks and the opposite ends of the wrappers being folded around the bound edges of the hooks and being gummed. pasted or otherwise secured to the doubled portions a thereof.

In the preferred construction shown. the doubled portions (1 are folded around the free edges of the books so as to lie directly in contact with the top and bottom covers thereof. but the exact manner of disposing the overlapping ends of the wrapper as applied to the book is not a matter of great importance. for example. the ends of the wrappers which were folded around the hound edges of the books may be folded inwardly against the book covers and the doubled portions (1: thereof secured to the exposed surfaces thereof.

As shown. also. the portions 1 of the wrapper which are folded back to provide the portions of doubled thickness. are preferably folded inwardly so that they will rest directly in contact with the covers of the books whereby said folded back portions will be held in position by the over-lying portions of the wrappers without the use of other securing means, though my inven tion contemplates any manner of folding the wrapper to provide the'portions a of doubled thickness.

The wrappers a are preferably of somewhat greater width than the length or height of the book and are adjusted to the book in such manner that they will project at both ends of the book, substantially as shown at 2, Fig. 6, thus to a great extent, protecting the edges of the covers andleaves of the book from being torn or mutilated in handling. My invention, however, contemplates equally making said wrappers of any desired width relative to the length of the books that will provide adequate strength.

I claim;

1. A book wrapper consistingof a sheet of. paper the main body portion of which is of single thickness and which comprises an end portion of double thickness which, as the wrapper is applied in use, is adjusted around the free edges of the cover and leaves of the book, and entirely to the outside of the book.

2. A book wrapper as specified in claim 1, in which the portion of double thickness is formed by folding the end of the wrapper inwardly and the wrapper is applied to the book so that its folded-in end. will rest di rectly in contact with the cover of the book.

3. A bookwrapper as specified in claim 1,

in which the portion of double thickness is formed by folding the end of the wrapper inwardly and the wrapper is applied to the book so that its folded-in end will rest directly in contact with the cover of the book and the opposite end of the wrapper is folded around the bound edge of the book and its free end secured to the exposed surface of the wrapper overlying the folded-in portion thereof.
