the
proper functioning of the tool.
The accompanying drawing represents by way of example a Spanner according to the invention:
F the ig. 1 is an axial longitudinal section of spanner provided with the displaceable silde and bolt.
igs. 2 and 3 are respectively front and rear views of the spanner.
ture 2 in which a rod 3 integral with the i slide 4 can be shifted and secured as required` 1. he handle 1 is provided with an aperby a suitable nut 5. The slide 4 is guided laterally in a guide 6 integral with the handle as shown in Fig. 4,
1; the faces of the guidemay be plain or dovetailed, or formed in any other suitable manner. At the end oft he slide 4 there is a bolt 7 of which the beveled part 8 can enter one of holes 9 of suitable form (round, oval, etc.) provided on the periphery of the socket 10. The socket is open at each end l1, the openings being of tion the rectangular hexagonal or other desired secand of different dimensions. Around bolt 7 there is a spring 12, one end of whichrests against a vshoulder 13 of the slide 4. The spring constantly presses the bolt 7 forward, the bolt being retracted by means of a milled head 14. When the socket 10 is to be replaced by another having a larger or smaller diameter, it is only neces-sary vto move the slide 4 either upwards or ldown- Wal' ds so that the bolt 7 is disengaged from ig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 ofl Fig.
one ofthe holes 9 ofthe socket lO.- The part of the socket vcontaining the holes 9 has an external flange 15. .This flange-'is provided tosecure the -socket 10 to the handle 1 by means of the slide 4.`
The slide 4 and the corresponding part of the handle 1 are shown provided f with notches 16in order to fix the parts more securely together.
In order to use the spannerin the case where the nut to'be tightened or loosened` is close to a wall or the like, the opening 'for the socket is disposed eccentrically in the head 17 of the spanner so that there is only a very small portion 18 at the head 1 of the spanner which might otherwise in` terfere with the use of the tool.
Having thus describedthe nature of the said invention and the best means I know olf carrying the same into practicalelfect, I c aim l Es PATENT oFFIcE. ,l
The combination'with a handle provided in one end with a nut socket receiving opening, a slide mounted upon the khandle adjacent said opening, the free end of the slide being provided with a socket-engaging recess, means for locking the slidein adjusted position7 and a spring projected socket engaging bolt mounted in and carried 7 y 70 by the slide, of a socket insertible within the opening of the handle and providedwith an annular projection to fit the recess of the slide and be held against outward displace- 'ment relatively to the handle, and with openings to receive 'the bolt, the bolt and openings cooperating to hold the socket against rotation.`
l In testimony whereof I have signed. my name to this specification.
