By constructing the battle in this manner it is easily assembled in position and is readily removable when it is desired to remove it. It is apparent that the battle, hesides functioning in the ordinary manner as a battle also acts as a. heating surface and thereby serves to increase the etliciency of the furnace. It is apparent that this is also true of the bridge-wall. Delivery pipes and 36 which are connected to some suitable source of fluid supply communicate with the container at the opposite sides thereof. These delivery pipes may communicate with the container at either the trontor the rear thereof, depending upon the convenience of attachment in each particular case, and for this purpose openings are made in the end walls of the container at each side of each end wall, the openings which are not being used being closed by suitable plugs. Outletpipes 38 and 37 are provided for delivering the hot water to the radiators, the number of said pipes being optional in each case. The form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 are of a water heater and the forms shown in Figs. 4 and 5 relate to the use of the device for a steam heater which will be described hereinafter. In the form shown in Fig. 3 and Fig. 4, a delivery pipe 40 is in communication with the bridge wall and projects exteriorly of the furnace and may be attached or connected to the main delivery pipe at any convenient location. Provided in the end walls of the furnace are openings 42 and 43 which communicate respectively with the passages 45 and 45 provided between the container and the shell so that the dust and dirt which is brushed from the upper surface of the container may thereby be removed, although it has been found in actual experience that most or all of the dirt and soot which is deposited in said passages is very readily burned by the hot gases passing therethrough. )peni11gs 4-4.- are provided in the end walls adjacent the upper portion thereof to allow the operator to brush the dirt and soot; from the upper surface of the container into the passages 45 and 45. IVith a device constructed as described there is provided av furnace which is simple of structure and at the same time very durable. By forming the various, parts as described the number of parts to a furnace is greatly reduced and the cleaning of the furnace is brought to a greater degree of simplicity, as well as reducing the costs of assembling a furnace of this type. The increased combustion resulting from the. introduction of air into the furnace and the manner of introducing the same also add to the eiliciency of the device.
In Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 there is shown a modilied form of the invention whereby the furnace is utilized for steam heating instead of for hot water heating. A steam dome 50 is mounted on the shell and is connected to the container by means of pipes 51 and 52 and to the bridge wall by means of the pipe A delivery pipe 52-5 serves to conduct the steam from the dome 50. In both cases, whether the device is used for a hot, water heater or a steam heater stay bolts or ribs are cast integral with the interior of the container. serving to reenforce the walls of the container so as to prevent any warping oi the same or any bulging thereof.
\Vhile we have illustratml and described the preferred :forms of construction we do not wish to limit ourselves to the precise forms of structure shown but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modific' tions as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A boiler comprising a semi-cylindrical fluid container having semi-cylindrical walls in spaced relation; end walls mounted thereon and integral therewitl'i; spaced longitudinally extending L-shaped supporting standards adapted for engaging the edges of said container for supporting the same. the inner diameter of said container being equal to the space separating said standards; supporting brackets projecting inwardly from the inner surface of each of said supporting standards and above the bases of said standards; grates mounted on said brackets and positioned below the point of engagement of said container with said supports; outwardly projecting brackets on said supporting standards for reinforcing the same; a semi-cylindrical outer shell supported along its edges by said supporting standards and in spaced relation to said container; and a front and rear wall co-operating with said outer shell for enclosing said container.
2. A boiler comprising a semi-cylindrical fluid container having semi-cylindrical walls in spaced relation; end walls mounted thereon and integral therewith, said container comprising a single casting; spaced longitudinally extending L-shaped supporting standards, each having its legs vertically extending and engaging with its base the below the point of engagement of said con-v tainer with said supports; a plurality of reinforceing brackets mounted on the outer surface of said supporting standards for re inforcing the same; a semi-cylindrical outer shell supported along its edges by said supporting standards and in spaced relation to said container, the end, front and rear walls co-operating with saidouter shell for enclosing said container.
