My invention relates to a portable milling machine and particularly to one adapted. to mill the valve'seats of slide valve engines. One object ot myfinvention to' utilize the valve chest` of the engine as a base tori the machine thus dispensing with large and heavy castings. Another object of my nvention is to so construct the machine that it may be adjusted to valve chests of different sizes. till another' object ot' my inven-` tion to so construct the device that the parts may be readily detached from `each other so thatl they may bevpacked in smally space for transportation.

Four lugs 12 are secured to the corners of the valve chest by bolts 13. Fach of the lugs 12 is provided with an opening for the passage of a guide bar let which is secured by a set screw after the parts are adjusted. Adjacent to the lugs 12 at one end o'l the valve chest are a pair of clamp blocks 15 and at the other end a pair of clamp blocks 16. Formed in each of the blocks 15 and 16 are a pairot 0pen-4 ings at right angles to each other, one for the reception of one of the guide bars 14 and the other for the reception of a vertical brace rod 17. Set. screws secure these rods and bars in the blocks. While I have shown the blocks 15 and 16 separate from' the lugs 12 each block may be permanently secured to or formed integral With its adjacentlug; Sliding on each ofthe guide bars 14 is a pair of guide blocks 18 similarfin form to the blocks 16 `but each provided with only onelset screw' to secure it yto one ot the pairs o-fjcrtical guide rods 19. A Acrank handle 26 may be ap-` plied to the square end of one of the rods 22 to rotate it. Mounted on the lower end of one of the'guide bars 19 is `an arm 27 having a bearing for a feed rod 28 the threaded portion of which engages.V

This feed screw is prevented from longitudinal movement relative to the bar by a lug 42 secured to the bar and its threaded portion engages with a feed block 43 having a groove in its side sliding around an internal flangekt carried by the casting 30. This construction allows the cutter bar to be rotated by the motor and at the same time provides accurate adjustment for depth which is secured by rotating the feed kbar through the crank handle 45.
My device is applied to the engine by bolting the lugs 12 to the corners of the valve" chestat'ter thecover had been removed, the set screws in the lugs as Wellas those in the clamp blocks 15 and 16 and in the guide blocks18 being first loosened to allow the device to be adjusted to thesize of the valve chest. The set screws are noW tightened so that the parts will form a rigid frame work. It will be understood that sprocket chain 25 may be lengthened or shortened by inserting or removing links. The milling action of the device is the same as in any milling machine and need not be described.V
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent of the United States is:
l. In a device of the class described, the combination with two pair of lu'gs adapted to be secured to thel valve chest of an engine, of a pair of guide bars each adjustably carried by one pair of said lugs, a cross carriage slidingly carried on said guide bars, a tool carriage slidingly mounted on said cross carriage, and a milling tool mounted in lsaid tool carriage.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with two pair of lugs adapted to be secured to the valve chest of an engine, of a pair of guide bars each adjustably carried by one pair of said lugs, a second pair of guide bars extending at right angles to said first named pair and forming a cross carriage, adjustable connecting means between said pairs of guide bars, a tool carriage, sliding on said second set of guide bars, and a milling tool carried by said tool carriage.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with two pair of lugs adapted to be secured t0 the valve chest of an engine, of a pair of guide bars each adjustably carried by one pair of said lugs, brace rods said latter named guide bars, feed rods en# gaging said yokes, means for simultaneously rotating said feed rods, and a tool carriage slidingly mounted on said cross carriage.

In a device of the class described, the combination witlrlugs adapted to be secured to the `valve chest of an engine, of a pair of guide barsadjustably carried by said lugs, a second pair of guide bars slidingly "mounted on said first named guide bars and forming a cross carriage, yokes engaging,
said latter named guide bars, feed rods engaging said yokes, and a tool carriage slidingly mounted on said cross carriage. 6. In a device of the class described, the combination with lugs adapted to be secured to the valve chest of an engine, of a pair of guide bars adjustably carried by said lugs, a brace bar extending between said guide bars, clamp blocks adjustably securing said brace bar to said guide bars, feed rodsv carried by said clamp blocks, a cross carriage actuated from said feed rods, and a tool carriage sliding on said cross carriage. 7. In a device of the class described, the combination with lugs adapted to be secured to the Valve chest of an engine, of a. pair of guide bars adjustably carried by said lugs, a second pair of guide bars forniin'g a cross carriage, adjustable means for securing said second pair of guide bars in sliding relation to said first namedbars, a feed rod carried by one of said second named guide bars, and a tool carriage sliding on said cross carriage and actuated from said feed rod.

In a device 0f the class described, the combination with a tool carriage, of means for mounting' said carriage on the valve chestof an engine, a casing mounted on said carriage, aV cutter bar journaled in said casing, a feed screw passingthrough said cutter bar and engaging with a slotted feed block, and an internal flange carried by said casing and engaging the slot in said feed block.
