To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, J'osnri-r H. JACos, citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination- Presses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the :'lccompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a press adapted for use in machine shops in various relations, as in the use of dies. ln other words, it is well adapted to perform the function of a die press, but it may be used in many other relations where a similar or analogous .funcion is required.
My iniproven'ient consists of a frame worl; having two spaced parallel bars upon which is slidably mounted a support for the article to be acted on by the press, this support being normally locked in the desired position of adjustment through the medium of dogs engaging ratchet teeth with which the bars are provided. By releasing these dogs the said member may be quickly adjusted vertically through the medium of a rack and pinion construction, rac-lis being formed on the said bars and the pinions being mounted on the adjustable member and connected to coperate.
The other member of the device carries a divided nut which is normally spring held in cooperative relation with a screw which may carry a tool of any desired character, as a die, for punching or embossing. The two parts of the nut are adjustable to disengage them from the screw. in which event the latter may be quickly adjusted vertically through the medium of a shaft and pinion, the latter cooperating with the screwthreads and having its periphery groove-d and recessed to engagesaid threads.
Having briey outlined my improvement, l will proceed to describe the saine in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated an embodinient thereof. In this drawing:

Let the numeral 5 designate a frame composed of two spaced parallel side members 6 which are centrally provided with longitudinally disposed toothed or cogged racks 7, these racks being formed directly on parallel parts 8 which are secured in any suitable manner to the parts 9 of the members 6, the latter being connected at the top by an arch 10, the arch and parts 9 being preferably formed of standard channel iron, usually rlhe parts 8 upon which are formed the racks 7 are of different metal and a re secured to the members 9 so that so far as the operation of the structure is concerned the two parts or members are substantially integral. The parts 8 are connected at their extremities which are upmost when the structure is in the upright position, as shown in full lines of the drawing, by 'a transverse member l2 perforated, as shown at 13, to receive a screw le which is grooved on opposite sides to receive dogs l5 which are secured to the part l2, as shown at 16. These'dogs prevent the screw from turning when `the device .is in use.

The block is equipped with a hand wheel 37 for convenience of manipulation.

This member 3S is ot channel shape, as illustrated in the drawing, and is provided at its opposite ends with clamping parts 39 which are connected by bolts d() which pass through pertorations formed in the channel member 3S and the parte 39, nuts al being used to secure the clamping parts in place. These parts 39 turn inwardly at their outer extremities, shown at 42, whereby they engage the outer edges ot the channel anges ot the parts 9 of the frame. The bolts 40 also pass through cylindrical parts 43 of dogs lll. which are jouriialed on the bolts, the said dogs being equipped with teeth or projections Ll5 which are adapted to engage ratchet teeth 46 which are formed on the parts 9 of the trame. these ratchet teeth being arranged on oppol site sides ot centrally located toothed racks 7, the dogs being centrally recessed, as shown at 48, to make room tor the toothed racks, whereby the dogs are tree to move sutliciently to throw their projections into and out ot engagement with the ratchet teeth without the interference ot said racks. The dogs are adjustable for the purpose of releasing the member. 38 from its locked relation upon the frame through the medium ot' a rod 49 which is arranged within the chamber of the channel and connected at one eX- tren'iity, as shown at 50, with a projection 5l formed on the cylindrical part ot' the dog, while its opposite extremity is connected, as shown at :32, with a similar projection 53 formed on the cylindrical part of the opposite dog, the two projections, as shown in the drawing, being oppositely disposed on the two dogs with reference. to their axes, whereby the movement ot the rod in oneI direction oi the other imparts corresponding movement to both dogs, whereby the projections ot the two dogs are thrown simultaneously out of engagement with the ratchet teeth ot the trame.4V The rod 49 is actuated to perform the last named function through the medium of an arm 54E which is secured to a spindle 55 joui'naled in the two lianges ot the channel shaped member 38, the said spindle having a depending Vcrank arm 56 slotted, as shown at 57, to receive the rod. The teeth or projections l5 of thevdogs are normally held in engagement with the ratchet teeth of the frameby a torsional spring 58 surrounding the spindle, but having one extremity secured thereto, as shown Vat 59, while. its opposite extremity is secured to the channel member 38, as. shown Vat 60. The torsional stress ot this spring upon the spindle actuates the crank arm 56 to cause the latter to engage a stop 61 formed on the rod, the crank arm, as illustrated in the drawing, engaging the rod between the stop 31 and a second stop 62.
lV hen the dogs are disengaged from the ratchet teeth of the frame, the member 38 is adjusted longitudinally of the frame by means of pinions 63 which engage the racks 7 et the frame. As illustrated in the drawing one ot these pinions is mounted on a spindle (Se journaled in one extremity ot the member 37 and the adjacent clamping parts 39 ot the structure, the spindle (3f-l having an extension at one end which is tashioned, as shown at 65, to receive a socket wrench which may be ot the brace and bit type, whereby the spindle, together with its pinion, may be rotated in cooperative relation with the rack. In order that this movement ot the spindle 6l may impart a cor" responding movement to the pinion 63 on the opposite side, the last named pinion is mounted on a spindle 6G which also carries a bevel-gear G7 meshing' with a similar gear G8 i'ast on one extremity of a longitudinally disposed shaft 69 whose opposite extremity is equipped with a gear 70 meshing with a similar gear 7l fast on the spindle G4. By virtue oit this construction the two pinions 63 are simultaneously actuated to impart longitudinal travel to the member 38 on the trame whether the latter is in the horizontal or vertical position. When the trame is in the upright position it will only be necessary to actuate the lever arm 5d in the proper direction to release the dogs from the ratchet teeth of the frame in order to allow the member 38 to move downwardly or horizontally ot the trame parts 9; while the member 38 may be moved in the opposite direction through the medium ci the pinions and racks, a suitable socket wrench of the brace and bit type being employedfto actuate the spindles through the cooperation of the sha'lt (i9 which geared to the spindles ot the pinions as heretofore explained. lt is evident that by the manipulation of the spindles the transverse member 38 may be moved in either direction according` to the rotation ot' the spindles, when the dogs are in the disengaged position or when their projections are out ot engagement with the ratchet `teeth 4G. e
The transverse member 38 is centrally provided with a perforation 7:2 adapted to receive an article which may be of such. character as to be verticallyr positioned in order that it may be acted on in the endwise direction by the screw la or Aby a -tool ot' any desired character comiected with the lower extremity ot said screw. This article may he a shaft or rod trom which pulleys are to he pressedn in which case a die or vthe purpose would be secured to the lower end of screw shaft lei, as by means of a set screw 100 running into a socket (not shown) in the lower end of screw sha-ft lll. n order that the article may be properly positioned within the opening 7.2 l have provided a slot or side opening 7 3 which is normally closed by a reintorcingplate 7l. rlhis plate is provided with a bottom flange which cxtends underneath one of the flanges of the channeled member 38, and this flange is perforated at one end to receive a fastening screw 76 which forms a pivot upon which the plate may be swung into and out ot position, while the flange at its opposite end is slotted, as shown at 79, to engage another screw 8O which is threaded into the adjacent iiange of the member 38. ln order to properly hold the plate 7i in the assembled relation with the body of the transverse member, I employ two screws 8l which pass through perfor-ations in the plate et suiiicient size to allow the screw heads to pass through. I then insert spring washers 82 between the screw heads and the plate, whereby the latter is under tension to maintain its proper position in close contact with the body member, ln order to hold the spring washers in proper position they are slotted on one side to receive pins 83 which are fast in the plate a short distance from the screws. These pins prevent the washers from rotation on the screws and possible disengagement, while at the same time the washers are readily removable whenever it becomes necessary to swing the plate away from the body member.
In order to facilitate the rotary movement ot the block 17, l provide a circular bearing consisting ot a wire or small rod 8i which is partly embedded in a groove formed in the upper surface ot the Atrame part l2, but extends suiiiciently above the part 12 to iorm a bearing for the block which may be providedv with a circulanl groove which the bearing also engages. This bearing ring 8l slightly spaces the block Ytroni the iti-ame part 38 and reduces the iriction incident to the rotation of the block to a minimum.
The eXtreinity 10 ot the traine which is appermost when the structure is in the upright position, is provided with a swinging member 85 which is pivotally connected with the frame, as shown at 88. 1When it is desired to use the machine in the horizontal. position or that illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 6, the iframe is moved to the horizontal position, in which event the base 87 upon which the structure is supported in the upright position, forms a support ior one end ot the structure, while the swinging niember 85 assumes the vertical position and forms a support tor the opposite extremity as shown at S9, and hinged to the adjacent extremity o-f the base 87, as shown at 90, so that when the device is moved to the horizontal position, it will simply turn on the hinge 90, while the plate 88 willr remain in its normal position. By virtue of this construction the press is locked against displacement upon the floor or bench, or other surface or supporting structure where it is employed.
From the foregoing description, the use and operation of my improved press will be readily understood. The screw 14 may be moved longitudinally on the frame either by rotating the block 17 when its sectional nut is in cooperative engagement with the screw, or the nut members may be disengaged from the screw, in which event the latter may be given its endwise or longitudinal movement through the instrumentality of the shaft 35 and the pinion 36. Again, in order to move the member 38 longitudinally of the frame to coperate with the screw 14, it is only necessary Vto disengage the dogs ai from the ratchet teeth of the frame to permit the member 38 to be moved in either direction thereon, the dogs automatically assuming their locking relation with the ratchet teeth as soon as they are released from the disengaging stress through the medium of the stress exerted in the opposite direction by the torsional spring 38 mounted on the spindle 55, as heretofore explained.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A combination press comprising a frame, a rotary block mounted on the frame, a screw passing through an opening in the frame, a divided nut mounted on the block and normally spring held in coperative relation with the screw, means for adjusting theV nut to disengage it from the screw, and means forimparting longitudinal movement to the screw when disengaged.
2. A combination press comprising a frame, a rotary block mounted on the frame,
a screw passing through an opening in the frame, a divided nut mounted on the block and normally spring held in cooperative relation with the screw, means for adjusting the nut to disengage it from the screw, means for imparting longitudinal movement to the screw when disengaged7 said means comprising a shaft journaled in the frame, and a pinion mounted on the shaft and engaging the screw. f f
3. A press comprising a frame, a rotary block mounted thereon, a screw passing through an opening in the frame, a divided nut mounted on the block and normally spring held in cooperative engagement with the screw, and means for adjusting the nut to disengage it from the screw, said means including a cam mounted to rotate and arms acted on by the cam and having parts engaging the nut members and arranged to move the latter against the normally acting spring tension.
4:. A press of the class described comprising a frame, a block mounted to rot-ate thereon, a screw passing through an opening in the frame, a divided nut mounted on the block and normally spring held in coperative engagement with the screw, means mounted on the frame and engaging the screw to lock the latter against rotary movement, means for adjusting the nut to disengage it'from the screw, and means for imparting movement to the screw in the direction of its axis when the nut is disengaged therefrom.
5. The combination with a frame member having spaced parallel arms, a screw movable in the direction of its axis on the frame member, an opposing member movably mounted on the frame member', means for adjusting the opposing member on the arms of the frame member comprising dogs mounted on one member and a cooperating ratchet carried by the other member, means for connecting the dogs, and means attached to the connecting means for simultaneously actuating the dogs.
6. The combination of a frame having spaced arms and a transverse connecting member, a screw endwise adjustable on the transverse member of the frame, an opposing member movable on said arms of the frame and having dogs cooperating with ratchet teeth formed onthe arms, a rod connecting the dogs, a spindle journaled in the opposing 'member and connected with the rod, a torsionally acting spring mounted on the spindle to normally hold the dogs in engagen'ient with the ratchet teeth of the arms, and a corresponding arm mounted on the spindle for hand manipulation.
7.* The combination with a frame, of a screw locked against rotary movement, a nut coperating with the screw, means for releasing the nut from the screw, and means for imparting endwise movement to the screw when disengaged from the nut.
S. The combination with a frame, of a screw locked against rotary movement, a nut cooperating with the screw, means for releasing the nut from the screw, means for imparting endwise movement to the screw when disengaged from the nut, an opposing member movably mounted on the frame, and means for adjusting said member comprising ratchet and dog mechanism and rack and pinion devices.
9. The combination with a frame, of a screw movable on the frame in the direction of the axis of the screw, means for actuating the screw, an opposing member arranged to cooperate with the screw, the opposing member being movably mounted on the frame,
and means for actuating` said member, comprising` ratchet and pawl mechanism and rack and pinion devices, the ratchet being located at the side of the rack.
l0. The combination with a frame, of a screw movable on the frame in the direction of the axis of the screw, means for actuating the screw, an opposing member arranged to coperate With the screw, the opposing the pawl being recessed to pass over the l5 rack.
