' 4 Claims. (01.142-40) My present invention relates to portable devices particularly adapted'for temporary installation within fulling mills for use in relagging the rolls.
While my invention may be employed for.
other uses, its novel features and advantages may be best illustrated by considering the problems involved in servicing fulling mills. In fulling mills there aretwo pairs of wooden rolls controlling the feed of the cloth through the mill, with each pair being mounted on a common shaft and being rotated oppositely to the other pair. When these rolls become uneven they must; be refinished in order for'the mill to operate properly, and standard procedure has been to take down the mill sufiiciently to permit the heavy rolls to be removed and transported to the machine shop for turning in a lathe. The
rolls may be quickly and easily refinished after In accordance with my invention I am able to minimize the expense of this phase of fulling mill maintenance. I accomplish this result by means of a portable device adapted to be supported within the fulling mill in predetermined relation to a pair of rolls. The device includes a support slidably carrying a base having an adjustable cross slide on which I mount a pair of rotatable cutters. I space the cutters so that each may have an operative position anywhere between a point adjacent a mill wall and a posi-- tion common to the other. By this construction, I am able to refinish a pair of rolls without moving the device while ensuring the adaptability of my invention to all types of fulling mills.
The cutters are driven at high speed by an electric motor which may be quickly detached from the device in order to decrease its weight sufficiently to permit it to be readily carried from one fulling mill to the next.
In accordance with my invention after the various mills to be serviced have once been provided with cleats or other means to support the device in desired relation to the rolls, the refinishing of the rolls may be quickly effected since the rolls are not disturbed. i
In the accompanying drawings'I have illustrated an embodiment of my invention from which its full natureand several novel features and advantages will be readily apparent.

I have indicated 'at'l the top of the base oi my device, and at 2 the side walls. In order to ensure rigidity I have utilizedcrcss pieces 3 and adjacent each end of the base I I provide cross pieces 4 to establish compartments for slides 5 by which the overall length of the base I may be adjusted as required" by the distance between the walls W- of a particular mill M. The slides 5 may be locked'in any adjusted position by set screws 6 threaded through the wall*2 constituting the front wall of the base.
- The otheror back wall 2 carries adjacent each of its ends a boss 1 to rotatably support the screw 8 having on one end a gear 9 in'mesh with a gear [U on the shaft ll supported in yokes The shaft lil carries a crank l3 or: the like by which it may be rotated by the operator.
In the embodiment of:my invention shown in the drawings, the top I 'of the base extends laterallyof the walls 2 to present gi-bs l4 engage-' to establish a sliding interlock. The bed I6 is formed to establish a compartment I 8 to receive the fixed nut l9 carried by the slide l8 and also to reduce weight. A screw 23 rotated by the crank 2| is threaded through the nut I9 and rotatably supported by the ends of the bed I6.
The cross slide [8 supports at one end a bracket B braced as at 22 having a pair of spaced bearlugs 23 for the shaft 24 and a pair of guards 25 for the cutters 26 carried by the shaft 24, Intermediate the bearings 23 I mount a pulley 21 on the shaft 24.
Adjacent the other end of the slide [8 I provide a laterally disposed support 28 braced as at 29 to support the motor 30 with its driving pulley 3! in alinement with the pulley 21. The support 28 carries a pair of spaced uprights 32 having keyhole shaped slots 33 to receive the ends 34 of the motor mount base 35. The ends 34 are slightly'fiattened on one side as at 34 to fit within the narrower part of the slots 33.
The; motor mount base 35 carries the motor supports 35 in elf-center relation. The supports 36 are slotted as at 31 to receive the bolts 38 attaching the motor 30 thereto to permit the motor 30 to be shifted relative to the base 35 as required.
By this construction it will be apparent that the motor 30 may be quickly installed or removed by positioning it so that the ends 34 may be inserted in or withdrawn from the slots 33 while at other times the motor is locked in place although free to pivot. In Figs. 1 and 4 I have exaggerated the position of the motor relative to its supporting means but it will be appreciated that the off-center relation of the supports 35 to the base is only suificient to ensure the weight of the motor being off-center to maintain the belt 39 taut without danger of being worked forwardly by its pull. a H
In practice when the motor is installed it is rocked forwardly to permit the belt 33 to be positioned over the pulleys21 and.3l and is then brought back to bring the belt under tension;
Before devices in accordance with my invention are used, cleats 40 or other suitable supporting means are attached to the walls of a fulling mill. While in some mills'the supporting'means may be permanently attached to-the walls W in other mills this is not possible. For that reason mounts 4! that may be bolted to the walls W through established bolt receiving apertures.
Preferably the cleats-4B are'formed withribs42 ence in the direction of rotation ofthe rolls 45 and: 46 .I have provided a reversible; motorwith the reversing switch indicated at 4'. so that the cutting action may be reversed when the device is moved from one set of cleats to the other.
I employ two cutters 26 and these are spaced to ensure the adaptability of my device to all types of fulling mills. Because the motor 39 and the bed I6 and cross slide 18 are limited in their travel on the base I by the walls W, I space the cutters 26 so that they may have operative positions adjacent the walls -W. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the spacing of the cutters 26 is such that they both travel through a substantial common Zone so thatas one cutter 25 is brought into operative relation with one roll, the other cutter 26 may still be in an inoperative position, This relation is desirable asit ensures the adaptability of my device to all mills.
It will be appreciated that while it is desirable to have my devices of minimum weight, I have been able to accomplish this result without loss .of essential rigidity so that my invention is well vice comprising a bed, a cross slide adjustably i Ihave shown in Fig. 4 the cleats 40 carried by mounted on said bed, rollrefinishing means mounted on said slide, a base slidably supporting said bed, and being formed with an open compartment at each end, and a base supporting slide positioned in each of said compartments.
2. The device of claim 1 in which pairs of horizontally alined members are carried by the mill walls in predetermined relation to each pair of rolls and the base supporting slides and the members include complemental interengaging portions. 3. The device'of claim 1 in which pairs of horizontally alined members including upwardly disposed fianges are carried by the mill walls in predetermined relation to each pair of rolls and the base supporting slides comprise a rectangular frame receptive of the flanges.
4a. The device of claim 1 in which said base comprises top, front and back walls, cross members intermediate said walls bracing said base anddefining a compartment adjacent each end of said base, and a base supporting slide in each of said compartments.
