Description
T. B. DUULITTLE. Means for Holding Conductors Punches.
No.166,858. PatentedAug.17,l87.5.
N. PETERS, FHOYO UTNOGRAPMER WASHINGTON. D c.
UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE THOMAS B. DOOLITTLE, OF BBIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEANSFOR HOLDING CONDUCTORS PU'NCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 166,858, dated August 17, 1875; application filed May 8, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOS. B. DOOLITTLE, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Holding Conductors Registers or Check-Punches;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means for holding check and alarm punches and fare -registers upon the hands of conductors or other persons employed in collecting fares or tickets in railroad, street, or other cars or places; and it consists in the application to such devices of a holder, hereinafter more fully described, adapted to be connected to the device, to be held, in such manner that the device may be held in the palm, while the holder passes over the back of the hand and around the Wrist of the user in such manner as to allow of the free use of the fingers for the purpose of holding or collecting fares or tickets, while the thumb is free to be used to operate the button, or other means for operating the punch or other device.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved holder applied to a conductors register and alarm. Figs. 2 and 3 represent opposite side views of the holder separately.
In each of the views similar letters are employed to indicate corresponding parts wherever they occur.
A A represent an alarm-register, and B B are projections extending therefrom, which are provided with loops 1), to which the holder C is attached, as shown, for the purpose of supporting the alarm-register in the palm of the hand of a conductor or other person. The holder C is composed of a vertical or nearly vertical strip of leather, or other suitable substance, 0, the lower end 0 of which is, by preference, connected to the projection B by being passed round the same and stitched to the rear side of the part 0 while the upper end 0 extends under the projection B, as shown, in order to shield the hand from the friction of the projection, and on its outer side is provided with a strap, 0 which passes through the loop I), and is secured to the part c by means of a buckle, c, and loops 0 0 At about the center of the part c an extension, d, is formed, which connects the part c with a band, 0, adapted to pass round the Wrist of the wearer, in order to prevent the punch and part c from slipping out of position. This band 6 is provided with a buckle, c and loop 6 for the purpose of holding, with capability of adjustment and removal, the end 6 of the band e.
The inside of the parts of the holder C may be padded, in order to give greater ease and comfort to the wearer.
By supporting check and alarm punches and registers in the palm of the hand by means of a holder, C, carried over, and supported on, the back of the hand and wrist, the user of the punch or other device is enabled to make free use of his fingers for col lecting money or tickets, while at the same time the thumb is free to operate the mechanism of the device.
Although I have shown my improved holder adapted to an alarm-register, such as described in an application -for Letters Patent filed by me on the 31st day of July, 1874, it may be readily adapted to check-punches or registers in which the parts are so arranged as to be capable of being carried in the palm of the hand.
Having thus describedmy invention, I would have it understood that I do not claim, broadly, supporting a check or alarm punch'or fareregister by means of a strap or holder; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A holder, C, adapted for use with 'a check or alarm punch or fare-register, consisting of a part, c, for the hack of the hand, a connecting-piece, d, and a band, 0, for the wrist, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
Witness myhand this 24th day of March, 1875.
T. B. DOOLITTLE.
