H. SNODGRASS HAIR WAVER Filed Oct. 6 1927 Patented May 1, 1928.
UNITED STATE-s HASCAL sNoDGnA'ss, or BISBEE, ARIZONA.
HAIR WAVEB'.
Applicationuled October 6, 1827. Serial No. 224,466.
This invention relates to hair wavers and more particularly toa device for imparting a permanent Marcell wave tothe hair and is adapted for Waving the hair on one side of the head at a singleoperation and sol efficiently performing the function that the hair will remain in what is known as a permanent wave for a vconsiderable length of time.
A further object is to provide a device of this (character which can be easily operated without danger of burning the patient and which will most eiciently perform the functions intended. v
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure l is a plan view of my improved device;
Figure 2 is an end view ofv Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlargedview in section on the line 3 -3 of Figure 1; y
Figure 4 is a view in section on the line 4-4 of Figure 3, the iron being shown in elevation.
My improved device comprises what I shall term a base member 1 and a series of heating elements which I shall term irons 2. The base member 1V has an arm 3 ixed to one end and adjustably connected to an upright or support 4 by means of a bolt 5 and a nut 6' to permit of adjustment to support the device asy desired with relation tothe head of the patient. n
The base member 1 comprises a series of receptacles 7 of general U-shape in cross section and extending from end to end of the base. These receptacles 7 rmay be formed in the base in any way desired and, as a matter of fact, constituteparallel grooves, and I preferably locate in the base member between the receptacles 7 heating elements 8 with a casing of asbestos or other nonconducting material 9v extending around the lower face of the base member and preventing any transmission of heat from the base member to the outside. 4
The heating elements 8 are merely shown more or less diagrammatically as it is of course to be understood that these elements may take any form and are of the type in which electricity may be employed to generate heat.
The series of irons 2 are hingedly connect-- ed, as shown at 10, to bifurcated brackets 11 on one end of the base member 1, and they are adapt-ed4 to` be positioned in the several receptacles 7 and have a cross sectional shape and a surfacecontour conforming to thev shape and contour of the receptacles 7` but are smaller in crosssection than are the re ceptacles, so thatfwhen allthe irons are in vposition a sinuous passage or space is provided for the accommodation of hair 12, and
felt or other coverings 13. Y, y
Furthermore, it will be noted that these irons are of such apsize vthat they iit together at their outer portions so as to prevent the` escape of heat and are made to` accommodate electric heating elements 14, the terminals 15 of which project through insulated extensions 16 on one end of the base member 1.
The opposite end of the base member 1 is provided with a series of U'shaped spring clips 17 having flared upper ends to receive handles 18 on the `irons and insulated from the irons. These vclips 17 actascatches to maintain vthe virons in'proper position in the base member but permit the irons to be` swung on their pivots, as indicated in dot and dash lines in Figure 4.'
The operation of my improved device is as follows:
The irons 2 are all swung out of operative position relative to the base member 1, the sheet of felt or other material 13 is positioned against the walls of the receptacles 7 and may be moistened with any suitable material. The hair 12 is then placed on the sheet 13 and the series of irons 2 are then brought into proper operative position to the base member, these irons being moved in position in regular succession so as to exert pressure on the hair without undue strain. The irons of course are held in operative position by the clips 17 and the hair is left in the device as long as necessary to give the desired permanent Marcel wave.
rlfhe broad idea of the invention is to provide a' base member, preferably heated, and a plurality of pivoted irons, also heated, which vare adapted to move into and out of opertions might. be made in the general form of the parts described Without departing from the invention and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall Within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A hair Waver, including a base member, a plurality oi' irons hingedly connected at one end to the base member and removably connected at their other ends to the base member, said base member and irons forming a sinuous passage for the accommodation of hair t0 heat and curl the same, electric heating elements in the irons, and heating elements in the base.
2. A hair cui-ler, including a base member having a series 0I" parallel U-shaped receptacles, heating elements in the base member between the U-shaped receptacles, an iron for each receptacle hingedly connected at one end t0 the base member and removably connected at its other end to the base member, said irons also of general U-shape externally but smaller than the receptacles, heat elements in said irons, and said irons of a width to it close together When in the receptacles.
3. A hair curler, including a base member having a series of parallel U-sha-ped receptacles, an iron for each receptacle hingedly connected at one end to the hase member and removably connected at its other end to the base member, said irons also of general U- shape externally but smaller than the receptacles, heat elements in said irons, and said irons of a Width to iit close together' when in the receptacles, a sheet of insulating material securedL to the :tace oi the base member, and heat elements Within the base member between the receptacles.
Signed at Bisbee in the county of Cochise and State ot Arizona this 27th day of Sept., A. D. 1927.
