This` invention u relates A, generally t o rail straightening devices used to straighten rails, such as used by railroads of all classes, so as to maintainthe propergauge of the rails. The invention has for an object the provision of an improved rail straighteningV device easily and quickly operated.
For further comprehensionfof the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanyin drawing, and to the appended claim in whic the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth. y

,As here embodied" my improved rail vstrai htening device comprises a base 10, suitably reinforcedby side elements 11, depending downward therefrom, and having end elements 12, depending downward from the base 10,r as' a means of supporting the base 10. The base 10 is provide with apertures 13, to removably support clamps 14, adapted to engage the flange 15 of a rail 16. The base 10, has rigidly but removably attached thereto as by means of bolts and nuts 17 at or near its extremities, supports 17 adapted to engagev a rail 16, and a rail 16', and having an elon ated aperture 17.', longitudinally positione or located. The base 10, is provided with elongated apertures 18, to' sliclably accommodate the rail spreading` members 19 and 20, adapted to engage t e rails land 16', and threadedly attached to the turnbuckle 21, which has a 'central element 22, provided vwith serrations i 19 and 20 will engage the rails 16 and 16 23. The turnbuckle 21, is relatively positioned in the elongated apertures 15, of the base 10, by the positioning memberr 24, rigidly attached to the said base 10, and provided witha threaded aperture to accommodate the turnbuckle 21. The wrench 25, is providedwith a suitable extended element 26, `or handle, and has i rigidly attached thereto, at or near its lower extremity, hook shaped members 27, depending therefrom, and having pivotally. attached thereto, asat 28, an engaging member 29,
adapted to engage the serrations 23.0f the central element 22 of the turnbuckle 21.
The rail clamp 30, is provided with a curved recess 31, adapted to engage the rails 16 and 16', and has attached thereto a depending chain 32.
Referring to the operation and function of my improved device, as above set forth and described; it will be understood, that when the wrench 25, is engaged with the central element 22 of the turnbuckle 21, and pulled in one direction that the turnbuckle 21 will slide thel rail spreading members 19 and 20, so that the said rail spreading members so as'to force the said rails 16 and V16 i against the supports 17, which will cause the rails 16 and 16 to assulne the proper gauge, in the event the rails 16 and 16 havespread. It will be further understood that when the rail clam 30 is enga ed with the rails 16 ,or 16', the epending c ain 32 being engaged in the hook shapedl member 33 or in the elon ated recess 17', that the rails 16 and 16 may e pulled or forced toward one another, which will cause the rails 16 and 16 to assume the proper gauge, in the event the said rails 16 and 16 are further apart than they should be.'

It will be clearly understood that the above be adjusted, and side and end elements depending downward rom the base as a means of supporting the base, the said base being formed with elongated apertures to slidably accommodate ,the said spreadin members, and the rail gauging means and t iestraightening means beingarranged on the base.
