C. E. STRIC KLAND BLADE HOLDER Filed April 5. 1927 Patented Apr. 24, 1928.
UNITED. STATES t i I 1,667,061 PATENT OFFICE.
CLARENCE STRICK'LAND, or ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY.
' BLADE HOLDER.
Application med April 5,
and it is an object of the invention to pro vide novel and improved means whereby such a blade may be conveniently and effectively mounted to. facilitate the use of such blade as a scraper for removing foreign matter from glass surfaces or the like and also to enable the blade to be employed w th facility as a cutter, such as can be used'in ripping seams andthe like.
The invention consists 1n the details of construction and in the combination and ar rangement of the several parts of my improved blade holderwhereby certaln lmpor- .tant advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and. advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. I
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed. I
In order thatv my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to de scribe the same with reference ,to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a blade holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention in assembled relation with a blade applied;
Figure 2 is a sectional view-taken substan-v tially on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional View taken through Figure 1 between the plates of the members with theblade in elevation;
Figure 4 is a view in perspective of the blade carrying member unapplied, the applied blade being diagrammatically inc 1- cated by broken lines,
Figure 5 is a View in perspective of the body or main member.
As herein disclosed, my improved holdercomprises two members A and B one snuglyfitting in the other and in a manner to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
As herein disclosed, the member A is.
stamped from a single sheet of metal of requisite gauge and which comprlses two overlying plates 1 integrally connected along similar marginal edges by a substantially cylindrical web 2. The outer longitudinal marginal portions of the plates'l are 1927. Serial no. 181,080.
returned, as at 3, to provide a double thickne'ss for reinforcement or strength and also to protect the user against injury as would otherwise be liable to occur by accidental contact with a raw edge of a plate. The plates 1 converge inwardly one toward the other while their outer portions are substantially'maintained in a fixed separated relation by the bridging arms 4, each of said arms being pre erably integrally formed with one of the plates 1 and bent to overlie the second plate 1 and soldered, welded or otherwise rigidly secured thereto.
The member B also comprises two overlying plates 5 integrally connected along similar marginal portions, the opposite ends of one of the plates 5 being provided with spaced arms 6 integrally formed therewith and bent to overliethe adjacent end portions of the second plate 5 and welded, soldered or otherwise fixedly secured thereto. Between the arms 6 each end of such plate 5 is provided with the outstanding fingers or lugs 7f which,'when the member B is forced within the member A between the plates 1 thereof, the contact of these fingers or lugs 7 p with the arms 4 limit the extent of insertion of the member B within themember A.
'Either of these fingers or lugs 7 may be readily engaged by the digit of a hand to facilitate the removal or separation of'the member B with respect to the member A.
' The plates 5 of the member B are adapted to have engaged therebetween a portion of a razor blade R of a well known flexible type for use in connection with safety razors.
'. Only avportionof the blade R, however, is
received within a member B thus providing an extended or projected part of the blade R which,cwhen the member B is engagedv Within the member A, is in requisite position to permit the blade to be used for scraping purposes, such as removing paint and other foreign matter adhering to a glass surface or the like. With a blade R operatively comprised within my improved holder, the blade can also be effectively and conveniently employed as a cutter, as for ripping seams, cutting paper, opening cartons and other general cutting operations. I have also found in practice that my improved holder can be employed to advantage in holding a flexible 'razor blade for honing and stropping.
When the blade R is not, in use, it is to be understood that the member B is to be inserted within the member A with the projected portion of the blade R inwardly directed, thus assuring effective protection against the action of the blade when the same is not in use, The member B .serves to facilitate a requisite engagement of a blade within the member A and the coaction between the members A and B is such to assure a maximum of stress being imposed on the blade R through the member A.
While not necessary, it is to be understood that the cylindrical web 2 may be employed as a barrel to permit the member A to be mounted upon the end portion of a suitable handle.
From the toregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a blade holder constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be' assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modilication without departing from the princip es and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and tormation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice ex cept as hereinafter claimed.
l claim 1. A holder for a razor blade comprising two members, one of said members constituting two overlying plates converging toward their rear margins, the rear marginal portions of said plates being resiliently connected, the :liorward marginal portions oil. said plates being spaced apart, arms connecting the outer portions of said plates for positively maintaining such portions of the plates separated, aiblade carrying member insertable between the plates of the first member, said blade carrying member having outstanding lugs coacting with the first named member for limitin the extent of in sertion of the blade carrying member inwardly ot the first-named member.
2. A holder for a razor blade comprising two members, one of said members constitutin g two overlying plates, the rear marginal portions of said plates being resiliently connected, the forward marginal portions of said plates'being spaced apart, arms connecting the outer portions of said plates for positively maintaining: such portions of the plates separated, a blade carrying member insertable between the plates of the first member, said blade carrying member having outstanding lugs coacting with the first named'member for limiting the extent of insertion of the blade carrying member inwardly of the first named member."
. 3. A holder for a razor blade comprising two members, one of said members constituting two overlying plates, the rear margin a1 portions of said plates being resiliently connected, the forward marginal portions of said plates being spaced apart, arms connecting theouter portions of said plates for positively maintaining such'portions of the plates separated, a blade" carrying member insertable between the plates of the first member, said blade carrying member having outstanding lugs contacting with the arms of the first named member for limiting the extent of insertion of the blade carrying member inwardly of the first named member.
4. A. holder for a razor blade comprising two members, one of saidunembers constituting two overlying plates converging to wardly of the first named member, said blade carrying member comprising two overlying plates secured one to the other and between which a razor blade is adapted to be artially received.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
