PATENT OFFICE.
EBENEZER GOMME, 0F HIGH WYCOM'BE, ENGLAND.
FURNITURE FITMENT.
Application led October 12, 1926, Serial No. 141,049, and in` Great Britain July 21, 1926.
This inventionielates to an improved furniture fitment and has for its object to provilie a secret receptacle for valuables and the li e.
According to the invention, I provide in any piece of furniture, such asa sideboard, dinner-Wagon or generally in any woodwork framing comprising uprights, stiles or le s, cross rails and a panel, means whereby t e panel or abutting sections thereof may be swivelled or revolved in a vertical plane so that either the front or back of the said panel or sections can be made to face outwards and so be visible. The back of the panel or of each of the sections thereof is fitted with a holder or receptacle for valuables or other articles which thus can either' be" concealed from view or brought to the front and so become accessible.
In a suitable construction according to the invention the panel or each of the sections thereof is provided at both its top and bottoni with a central pin which engages a slot or socket in the cross rail of the piece of furniture, or vice versa, or the pins and sockets may be arranged at the sides of the panel when not in sections. Whilst to outward appearance an ordinary or jointed panel is presented, this arrangement allows the -said panel or each ofl the sections thereof to be revolved on the centre axis provided b v the said pins, so that the back of the panel, of each section, -to which is attached a. holder for valuables or other articles, can show to the front.
It is obvious that a door hinged at one side and acting as a panel might serve as a carrier, but the hinges and handles necessary for the opening and closing thereof, cannot be concealed, and thus prevent the secrecy and consequent security obtainable with the above described arrangement, in p which neither hinges nor handles are required.
To enable the invention to be fully understood I will describe it by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of a sideboard provided with a panel in accordance with the invention.
Figures 2 and 3 are, respectively, sections on the lines 2-2 and 3-3 Figure 1.
Figures 4 and 5 are views similar to Figures l and 3 respectively, showing the panel rotated to reverse the positions o-f its front and rear surfaces.
Figure 6 is a view similar' to Figure l but showing the panel in two abutting parts or sectionsarranged to swivel independently.
a is the panel having the front and rear faces b and 0, respectively, and d is the woodwork or framing around the opening e filled by the said panel. f, f are the pms centrally arranged at the top and bottom of the panel a and shown as being attached to the framing d and entering sockets g, g on the panel; or the positions ofthe said pins and sockets may be reversed, that is to say, they may be arranged, respectively, on the panel and the framing.
By this arrangement it will be seen that the panel a can be rotated within the opening e, around the common central vertical axis of the pins f, f so as to present either its front face b, or its rear face c outwardly.
h is a stop on the frame ai which I employ to limit the rotative movement of the panel through an angle of 180, so that when it `is rotated in one direction or the other it will be arrested with either its back or front surface substantially in the plane of the frame el or parallel with the said plane.
In the arrangement illustrated I have shown the rear face c of the panel as fitted with a support or holder z', for a bottle, decanter, or the like` and a holder or support j for drinking glasses or tumblers one of which is indicated by dot and dash lines at k, Figures l, 2 and 4, so that by rotating the panel within the opening e from the position indicated in Figures l t0 3, in the direction of the arrow Figure 3, it will bring the bottle or decantcr and thedrinking glass into the position for use. indicated in Figures 4 and 5. After use, by rotating the anel a in the direction of the arrow, Figure 5, it will be caused to reassume the normal position indicated in Figures 1 to 3.
It will be understood that devices other than the devices z' and ,7' can be attached to the back of the panel a, for instance, a holder or receptacle for valuables.
In the arrangement illustrated in Figure 6 the panel fitting within the opening Z in the framing m is divided into two independent parts or sections n, o normally abutting together at the joint p and each capable of swivelling on a vertical central axis by l y n 1,eee,e4e
i t i means of pins g engaging sockets r, stops the side portions of said fra-me and inside 15 s, t on the said framing limiting the swivelof the planeof the inner face of said panel, ling movement of the said parts, n, o, re- 'a stop projecting from one 'side of said frame spectively, similarly to the stop z in the arfor engaging the rear face-of the panel at 5 rangement illustrated in Figures lato 5. one side thereof to hold it in position'to rep- I claim: resent a solid panel, glass racks secured to 20 A cabinet havin f a concealed compartment the rear face ofv said panel and a guarded defined on one si e by a vertical panel endecanter rack also secured to the rear face closing rectangular frame, a panel supportof said panel, said stop also adapted to en- 10 ed in and substantially fitting said 'fiame, gage the rear face of the panel`\ at the other and mounted in vertical positlon by vertiside to hold said panel in' positidn with the 2b cally disposed co-axial pivots at thetop and racks exposed to view. bottom of said panel having' their common axes located substantially centrally between y EBENEZER GOMME.
