A. S. SPIDEL CORD GUIDE Eiled-Oot. 18, 1926 Patented Apr. 10, 1928. I
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR S. SPIDEL, OF BREWSTER; OHIO, ASSIGNOR F ONE-HALF TO E. A. HAMILTON, 0F NAVARRE, OHIO.
- CORD GUIDE.
My invention relates to cord guide members for the caps of separable attachment plugs for electric cables and the like.
These plug caps as ordinarily made, while being adapted for the proper connection of the cable cords by leading or snubbing the cords around the contact blades and passing them over the top of the contact blade base plates, are also adapted for improper connection of the cable cords with the contact blades by leading the cords directly to the binding screws from the center of the cap without snubbing the cords around the contact blades and without passing them over 5 the top of the contact blade base plates in the proper manner.
It is desirable to snub the cords around the contact blades and lead them or'r the top of the contact blade base plates to the binding screws to avoid short circuits, and to minimize the strain on the binding screws caused byapplying a tension to the cable attached to the plug cap.
One object of the present improvements is to provide cord guide members for the caps of separable attachment plugs which will permit the attachment of the cable cords. to the contact blades of the plugs only by the proper method of snubbing the cords about the contact blades and leading them over the top of the contact blade base plates to the binding screws.
A large number of plug caps at present in use are of a standard form; and a further object of the present improvements is to provide a cord guide member as aforesaid which may be inserted into any standard cap before or after manufacture of the cap.
These and ancillary objects areattained in the present improvements by a construction and arrangement .for the cord guide member, which may be set forth in general terms as including a cord guide member having a two bladed propeller like formation adapted to be inserted into a plug capbetween the contact blades for maklng, with the plug cap, guideways for the cablecords permittlng only the proper connection of the cable cords with the contact blades.
A preferred embodiment of the invention Fig. 2, a vertical cross-section thereof as on line 2-2, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, a front perspective view of the propeller like cord guide member;
gig. 4, a rear elevation view of the same; an
Fig. 5, a perspective view of the cord guide member, the contact blades, and a cable, il-, lustrating the arrangement ofthe cable cords relative to the cord guide member and contact blades before snubbingthe cords about the contact blades and leading them over the top of the contact blade base plates.
Similar numerals'refer to similar parts throughout the drawing.
A cap indicated generally at 10 for a separable attachment plug for electric cables and the like is provided with they improved cord guide member 11 for forming with the Walls of the cap 10 guideways 12 for the cords 13 of the cable 14.
The plug cap 10 includes the molded cap dome 10' of rubber or the like, and contact blades 15 having base plates 16 are secured in a usual manner upon the dome. An axial aperture 17 is provided for the dome and enlarges inside the dome into a slotted cham ber 18; and the cords 13 of the cable 14 are inserted through the aperture 17 each cord being guided by the diagonal rear groove 19 of the propeller like cord guide member 11 so that it must be snubbed around the blade 15 and over the base late 16 for connecting the bared end 20 of t e cord to the binding screw 21 mounted in the base plate.
The propeller like cord guide member 11 is centrally wide enou h to fit tightly between the contact blades 15 and opposite sides of its opposite ends are curved as at 22 for fitting about the binding screws 21 to make certain that the ends 20 of the cords 13 will be hooked about the binding screws correctly from the outside as best illustrated in Fig. 1.
The outer ends 23 of the cord guide memher are preferably tapered towards each other from the front face 24 of the guide for fitting tightly into the dome chamber'of the plug cap dome preferabl so that the outer 1 surface 24 of the cord gulde lies in the same is illustrated in the accompanying drawing plane as the outer peripheral surface 25 of forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a blade end view of a plug cap provided with the improved cord guide;
the plug cap dome.
The cord guide member 11 is preferably made of the same composition as the cap dome; and uncured cord guide members may be inserted in uncured cap domes and the dome and guide of each plug cap cured together. On the other hand a' cured cord guide member may be press fitted into a cured cap dome after the cap dome has been assembled with the contact blades.
In addition to providin an internal conformation of the cap requiring that in wiring the same, the cords be snubbed around the contact blades and over the contact blade base plates, the cord guide member provides an eflicient insulation between the bared ends of the cords.
I claim:
1. A cap for a separable attachment plug and the like, and a cord guide member in the cap, the cap having contact blades and base plates therefor, and the cord guide member having faces forming, together with 'faces of the cap, guideways for snubbing cord wires about the contact blades and directing them over the base plates and for preventingconnection of the cords to the base plates without snubbing the cords about the contact blades.
2. A cap for a separable attachment plug and the like, and a cord guide member in the cap; the cap having cont-act blades and base plates therefor, and the cord guide member having propeller-like faces forming,
together with faces of the cap, guideways for snubbing cord wires about the contact blades and directing them. over the base plates and for preventing connection of the cords to the base plates without snubbing the cords about the contact blades.
3. A cord guide for the cap of a separable attachment plug and the like, including a front face, propeller-like side faces, and a diagonally grooved rear face. 1
4. A cap for a separable attachment plug and the llke including contact blades, and base plates for the contact blades, and means in the cap forming guideways for directing cords and the like about the blades and over the base plates and for preventing connec tion of the cords to the base plates without snubbing the cords about the blades.
5. A cap for a se arable attachment plug and the like including contact blades, base plates for the-contact blades, and binding screws for the base plates, and means in the cap forming guideways for directing cords and the likeabout the blades and over the base plates to the binding screws and for preventing connection of the cords to the binding screws'without snubbing the cords about the blades.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
