Description

A ril 10, 1928. 1,665,507
J. POLLAK GARMENT Filed Feb. 17, 1927 Patented Apr. 10, 1928.
TED STA T JULIUS IZOLLAKQOF HOUSTON, TEX-AS.
Application filed February 1'7, 192?. Serial Nb. 169,087.
This invention relates to garments for automobile drivers and equestrians and which are so shaped as to fit the wearer comfortably when in a sitting position. It
5 is inconvenientfor an automobile driver to use a lap-robe or the like in cold weather, when it might be desirable to do so, for the reason that a lap-robe or buttoned overcoat would interfere more or less with the operation of the pedals, levers or other parts by which the machine is controlled; and the present invention has for its object to provide conveniently detachable garments which, while protecting the legs of the wearer from cold and wet, will be comfortable and will not interfere with the use of the machine controlling devices. To this end the improved garments are so shaped that when adjusted to the legs of the wearer they will have thigh portions which are bent relative to their knee portions at the knee parts of the garments so as to conform the garments more or less closely to the bent legs of the wearer. To enable the garments to be conveniently applied for use they are preferably made open throughout their lengths and are provided with detachable fasteners.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a plan view of one of the improved garments with the parts folded together. Fig. 2 is a view of the same in open or unfolded position.
Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes the body or leg portion of the improved garment and 13 the bent or thigh portion thereof, said thigh portion extending upward some distance above the knee of the wearer. The entire garment may consist of one piece of any suitable material as heavy woven or knit fabric, or it may be of leather or any rubberized Waterproof material. In forming a garment of a single piece of woven fabric it is only necessary to cut out gores from the two sides thereof and then secure the separated edges formed by cutting out the gores together in any suitable manner, as by seams 14. If the improved garment is of knit fabric it may be fashioned or shaped to the desired form in knitting.
The leg portion of the garment is provided with suitable fastening means herein shown as ball and socket snap members 15, only one set of these fasteners'is shown in the drawing, but more can be used if desired. The thigh portion of the garment may also be secured together, in any suitable manner, preferably by snap fasteners, one member 16 of said snap fasteners being herein shown as mounted on a tab 17 stitched to the said thigh portion and the other members 16 being mounted on a strap 18. As herein shown the member 16 is the ball member of the snap fastener while the other members 16*, mounted on the strap 18, are the socket members. By providing a series of spaced members 16 on the strap 18 it will be evident that the thigh portion of the garment may be secured together in different positions of adjustment, according to which of the several members 16 is engaged with the member 16. Instead of snap fasteners but? tons, clasps, buckles, hooks and eyes or other equivalent or well-known detachable fastening means may be used if desired.
These fasteners are shown as being located near the bend of the garment, leaving the upper and lower ends of the garment open when in use. It will be understood that the improved garment is made to fit the wearer very loosely and is closed at its front, but is normally open throughout its length at its back, and may therefore be conveniently applied to the wearer; and when thus applied and fastened the garment will still be open at its upper and lower ends, affording free fiexure of the knees of the wearer; this construction rendering it unnecessary to use more than two detachable fastenings to keep the garment in place when in use.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the invention provides convenient garments which may serve to protect the legs of the wearer from cold and wet, the thigh portions of the improved garments being made of sufficient length to come up high on the thighs or lap of the wearer for protection. Owing to the fact that the thigh portions of the improved garments are bent, or are formed at an angleto the leg portions thereof, it is obvious that the improved garments may be comfortably worn by persons in sitting position without binding at the knees, so that the improved garments, while affording protection from cold and wet, will not in any way interfere with the operation of pedals, levers and other parts necessary in the control of an automobile.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A garment shaped to provide a leg portion and also a thigh portion, the latter being proper the garment may be comfortably worn when the user is in a sitting position, said gar- V ment being closed at its front and normally open at its back throughout its length and being provided with detachable fasteners which are located near the bend of the garment, leaving the upper and lower ends of the garment open when in use, thus afi'ording free flexure of the knee of the wearer.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JULIUS POLLAK.
