which I obtain these results will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings in which three satisfactory and preferred embodiments of the invention are illustrated. Fig. l is a partial longitudinal section of the container; Fig. 2 is an end View thereof; Figs. 3 and 4'are views similar to Fig. 1 illustrating further embodiments of my invention.
The body orshell A of the container is generally cylindrical or substantially so, the container therefore having the shape of a barrel or drum. Sheet iron or any other suitable material may be employed in the construction of this body. As shown in the drawings, the shell A is made with aninwardly extending annular fold or projection b which serves as a support or backing for a flat ring a constituting a cover support and located toward the open end of the container. The material of the shell is provided with a return-bent portion 0 toward the open end of the container, said. portion being extended inwardly until it is in con.- tact with the flat ring a on the surface thereof opposite to the one engaging the fold I). At 7 I have indicated a removable cover which may be of any suitable construction, the outer portion of this cover overlaps the .ring a and bears against an elastic expanding ring h of the split type,
which latter is fitted within the end of the container, and-in the closed condition of the receptacle engages an inwardly extending flange at the free end of a ring g which also has an inwardly extending flange at its other end fitted against the fold b at the junction of its two layers. A packing rin def any suitable material is fitted aroun the cover in the annular space between the cover-supa and the return-bent portion 0 of the shell. By virtue of this arrangement a very secure and tlght joint is obtained, preventing the entrance of any foreign matter into-the container, as well as the escape of any of the contents. It will be understood that the expanding ring it may be contracted sufticiently to pass through the opening at the free end of the ring 9 and that upon releasing the ring it it will expand to the position shown to hold the cover in the sealing position.
.The cover support a, of rectangular cross section, as shown, may be made entirely flat as in Fig. 1, or in addition to this fiat portion, .the cover support may be provided with an outwardly extending flange a, fitted between the end of the shell and the return portion 0, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The return-bent portion 0 may terminate at the outer surface of the ring portion-a, having edge contact therewith only as in Fig. 1, or this return-bent portion may be provided with an inward extension such as 0 in Figs. 3 and 4, said extension being in contact with the outer surface of the ring portion a. To obtain still better contact and greater security in sealing the container airtight, a flange 0 may be provided at the inner end of the extension 0' to fit into the opening of the ring portion a, asshown in Fig. 4. In each of these constructions the packing ring 03 seals not only the openin of the container, but also the joint wh1ch the return bent portion 0 forms with the cover support. In each of these constructions also, the return bent portion 0 is extended into contact with the ring portion a of the cover support.
Various changes in the specific forms shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
' I claim:
1. A container comprising a shell having an inwardly bent projection at a distance from its end, and a return-bent end portion located on the inside of said shell, a cover support clamped between said projection and said return-bent portion, a reinforcing ring surrounding said return bent end portion of the shell, having a flange projecting inward- 1y at the extremity of the shell, in engagement with the bend of said portion and an but said shell in interlocking engagement with, and protects, said portion and projection against shocks or blows, an expanding ring fitted within the shell in engagement with said flange, a cover fitted between said expanding ring and said support, and a packing ring engaging said cover and the returnportion of the shell and preventing leakage between said shell and cover support from the interior of the container to the exterior thereof.
2. A container according to claim 1, in which the cover support has a flat ring of rectangular cross section engaged by the edge of the return-bent'portion on that surface of the ring which is opposite to the inward projection of the shell.
3. A container according to claim 1, in which the cover support has an outwardly extending flange fitted between the returnbent portion and the body of the shell.
4. A container according to claim 1, in which the return-bent portion is provided with an inward extension in contact with the surface of the cover support opposite to that which is seated on the inward projection of the shell.
5. A container according to claim 1, in whiclrthe' return-bent portion is provided with an inward extension in contact with the surface of the cover support opposite to that which is seated on the inward projection of the shell, and in which the inner edge of said extension is provided with a flange projecting into the opening of the annular cover support.
6. A container comprising a substantially cylindrical shell having one end thereof open for a detachable closure, said shell being provided with an inward projection located at a distance from said open end and a return bend extending inwardly of said shell at said end, a cover support clamped between said bend and said projection, a reinforcing ring surrounding the end portion and covering said pro'ection and said return bend, said ring aving an inwardly projecting flange spaced from said cover support, a packinglmounted upon said cover ed upon said ring, a packing interposed be tween said cover and r1n and means to sea cure said cover detachab y in position, the end of said shell interlocked with said ring being located adjacent to said packing whereby said packing serves not only to provide a seal for said cover, but also to seal the joint between said ring and shell and prevent leakage through said joint.
8. A container comprising a substantially cylindrical shell having one end thereof open for a detachable closure, said shell being provided with an inward bend located at a ist'ance from said open end, and a return bend extending inwardly ofsaid shell at said end, a cover support clamped between said bends and having a horizontally extending flange for the reception of a cover and a packing therefor, said inward bend of said shell terminating in contacting engagement with said cover in a position such that leakage of the containers contents between said shell and cover support will be prevented by said packing, and a reinforcing ring encircling said shell and having a pair of inwardly extending spaced flanges interlocked with and surrounding said bends for locking said ring securely to said container and for protecting said bends from external shocks or blows.
