ALIGNMENTSTRIP FOR ELECTRICAL BARRIERS.
Application filed. May 16, 1927. Serial No. 191,908.
This invention relates to insulating barrier constructions for use in electrical power plants, sub-stations, and the like, and particularly relates to means for attaching amb strips and front panel members to insulating barriers.
lt is an object of the invention primarily to provide a type of jamb strip for use on insulating barriers that will be of a simpler and cheaper construction and more easily and quickly installed than devices heretofore employed for a like purpose.
These and various other objects the invention attains by the construction hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of a barrier construction comprising jamb strips and front panels in accordance with the invention. f
Figure 2 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view of one of said barriers and the corresponding amb strip.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectaken upon the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
In these views the reference character 1 designates a wall, partition, or ceiling of a building as for example a power plant or sub-station. Mounted upon the wall 1 transversely thereto is a'plurality of insulating panels or barriers 2 of which two are shown. Said barriers are suitably spaced to accommodate between the same one or more electrical conductors or any electrical yequipment (not shown) requiring such shielding as is afforded by said barriers. For the purpose of mounting the barriers 2 upon the wall 1 elongated bolts 3 are extended through said barriers from their rear to their forward edges, the rear ends of said bolts being threaded for engagement by nuts a attaching said ends to anchorage plates 5 suitably embedded in said wall.
Upon the forward edge of each barrier 2 is vertically extended a j amb strip 6 formed preferably of a suitably light insulating material such as wood, and at suitable points said strip is formed with openings 7 giving passage to the forward end portions of the bolts 3. For reasons which will presently appear the openings 7 are proportioned to somewhat exceed in size the diameter of the bolts passing therethrough. The front portions of the openings 7 are enlarged in diameter as indicated at 8 to accommodate washers v9 and nuts 1() clamping said washers upon the shoulders formed between the inner and outer portions of said openings.
Secured to the front face of each strip 6 by nails or the like?) is a finish strip 10 covering the openings 8, and of lesser width than said strip G. The spaces formed between each adjacent pair of barriers 2 are closed by panel members 11 which may if desired, have the nature of removable or adjustable closures. The lateral marginal portions of the panels 11 seat against the front 'faces of the strip 6 at the sides of the finish strips 10 and may if desired be secured to the strips 6 by nails 12. or the like. In order however, to more securely fasten the panels 11 in place and to impart a more iinished appearance to the installation it is preferred to mount quarter-round or other suitable mouldingvstrips 13 in the angles formed by the front faces of the panels 11 and the lateral faces of the strips 10', said moulding being secured to the strips 10 by nails 14 or the like.
Because of the clearance afforded to the bolts 3 in passing through the openings 7 it is possible to laterally adjust the strips 6 (together with the strips 10 carried thereby) to compensate for any inequality in the spaced relation between the front ends of the barriers 2 so that panel members of a uniform size may be installed between a series of such barriers.
rlhus in Figure 1, it will be observed that the right hand jamb strip 6 is laterally eccentric to the bolt 3. While provision has heretofore been made for laterally adjusting jamb strips upon the forward edges of insulating barriers, such a provision being particularly shown in applicants Patent #1,612,644; issued December 28, 1926, the herein disclosed structure is yof a much more simplified nature than prior disclosures and through avoidance of metallic strips accomplishes a desirable reduction in cost as compared to prior disclosures.
It is to be understood that the term wall, as employed in the appended claims, is considered to include either a vertically or horizontally elongated structural element.
Vhat I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a barrier, and a jamb strip extending upon an edge face of said barrier, and having openings therethrough from its outer face to the engaged edge of the barrier, the outer portions of said openings being enlarged, of securing elements for said strip carried by said barrier propecting into said openings oit the strip7 and means Within the enlarged outer portions of said openings for clamping the strip to the barrier.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination With a Wall and a barrier seated against said Wall transversely thereto, a jamb strip extending upon the edge of said barriers remote from said Wall, a securing member anchored to said wall and extending through said barrier and into said strip, and a common means carried by the outer end of said securing member for attaching the jamb strip to the barrier and the barrier to said Wall.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination With a Wall, of a barrier seated against said Wall transversely thereto, a jamb strip extending` upon the edge of said barrier remote from said Wall having anl opening therethrough enlarged in its outer portion, a securing element anchored to said Wall and extending through said barrier and into said strip, and means carried by said securing member Within the enlarged outer portion of said opening clamping said strip to the barrier and securing said barrier to said Wall. Y
4. ln a device of the character described, the combination With a barrier and a jamb strip engaging an edge face of said barrier and formed With a plurality of openings extending from its outer face to thev engaged face of said barrier7 the outer portions of said openings being enlarged, and the inner portions of said openings aii'ording a clearance of said securing members providing for a lateral adjustment of said jamb strip7 of a linish strip secured to the outer face of said jamb strip and covering said openings.
5. in a device of the character described, the combination with a Wall and a barrier seated against said Wall transversely thereto, a jamb strip extended upon the edge of said barriers remote from said Wall, asecuring member anchored to said Wall and extending through said barrier and into said strip, and a common means carried by the outer end of said securing member for attaching the jamb strip to the barrier and the barrier to said Wall, said jamb strip being laterally adjustable relative to the barrier. Y
In Witness whereof I hereunto set my hand.
PAUL NICHGLAY.
