UNITED STATES IBRONISLAW KACZMARSKI, or Dn'rnorr, MICHIGAN.
SHADE RQLLEIR. H
Application filed April 23, 1927. Serial No 186,076.
This invention relates to improvements in shade rollers or the like, and it is the prin cipal object of my invention to provide a shade roller allowing a ready adjustment of the length of the roller to any width of window.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a shadeor curtain-roller of the above described type equipped with means for firmly holding and guiding the parts of the roller in their relative adjusted positions.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a shade or curtain roller equipped with simple, yet efficiently operating means for locln'ng the parts of the roller firmly in any of their relative adjusted positions without interference with their adjustability.
These and other objects .and advantages of my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds, and will then be specifically defined in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a roller constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, partly in section.
Fig. 3 is .a cross-section on line 33 of Figure 2.
The shade roller or curtain roller, as illustrated, may be constructed of any suitable 5 material, and comprises a body part 10 with ends 11 and 12 equipped with the customary metal mountings containing the springs and pawls commonly used with such rollers, and projecting beyond these mountings the usual pins 13 and 14 for supporting the roller are provided.
The median part of the roller is composed of preferably six members 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20, each substantially triangular in cross-section and having an outer face curved at the arc of a circle, all together forming the outer circumference of the roller. These members are at their outer ends made integrally with the end parts of the roller so that the third member slides within the opening formed between the adjoining two members of the other roller end. During their relative adjustment against each other to suit the length of the roller to the width of a window, these members are guided and held in position by means of the bands or sleeves 21, 22 and 23, 24 respectively.
A locking device for firmly locking the parts and members of the roller in their extended or reduced positions is composed of a rack 25 adapted to be engaged by a pawl or finger 26 pivotally secured intermediate its ends to the member next adjoining the member to which the rack is secured, the pivot point of this finger is designated 27 and its rear end is secured, as at 28, to a spring plate 29 or the like yieldingly supported or attached to the member next adjoining to the one carrying the rack.
The operation of my device will be entirely clear from the above description. If the roller is to be extended to suit the width of a window opening, the plate 29 is pressed slightly towards the adjoining member to which the rack is attached and the finger is lifted out of engagement with the rack by turning it about its pivot point, and members can now be slidably displaced with respect to each other so that the ends guided within the sleeves are distanced from each other for an amount suitable to make the rod serviceable to the width of the window whereupon the finger is again brought into engagement with the rack teeth in order to lock the parts in their relative adjusted positions.
It is to be understood, that the reducing of the length of the rod is effected in the same manner.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention as an example of the many ways to practically construct my device, I wish not to limit myself to the exact form shown and described, and reserve my right to make such changes therein as come within the scope of the appended claim without departure from the gist of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A shade-roller of the class described comwithin the opening formed between the adjoining tWo members, bands for guiding and holding the members, a rack on one of said members, and a pawl pivotally secured intermediate its ends to the member next adjoining the member to which said rack is secured, and a spring plate yieldingly secured to the member next adjoining to the member carrying the rack to whieh the rear end of said pawl is secured for" lackin the 10 parts in their relative adjusted positions.
Signed at Detroit in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan" this 9th day of April A. D. 1927.
BRONISLAW KACZMARSKI.
