EDWARD CHARLES WEBB, or LoNDoN, ENGLAND, AssIeNonoF ONE-HALF To GEORGE HENRY COWELL, or LoNDoN, ENGLAND. I
CIGARETTE CASE AND LIKE CONTAINER;
Application filed May 14, 1324,'Serial No. 713,321, an in Great Britain January 21, 1924.
This invention relates to cigarette cases and like containers and has particular reference to cigarette cases of the kind in which the actuation of a catch for locking and un- 5 locking the'li d so thatit may move relatively to the body'about. their ,hinging edges is effected by a relative sliding movement of the lid andbody with respect to one another. The chief object of the present invention 18 to provide improved and relatively inexpensive means for enabling the aforesaid sliding movement to take place. lVith the above object 111 vlew the clgarette case according to-the present invention may be said to comprise a body portion, a lid portion and a strip hinged to one of said portions, the strip and the other of said portions being provided with rod-like membersfitting concentrically the one within the other 20 with freedom of limited axial movement. In the preferredform the two rod-like members comprise a longitudinally slit hollow rod or tube, and a rod axially movable there-v in, the tube being secured to the body portion of the case alongside its hinging edge,
and the rod being connected to the lid portion by way of a web passing through the slit in the tube andunited to the hinge, the elements of which are movable with the lid 39 in an axial direction along the hinging axis.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect I will now describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate what I now consider to be a preferred embodim'ent ofthe invention as applied to a cigarette case. In these-drawings Figure 1 is a face view'and Figure 2 a cross section of the cigarette case and, V i Y Fi 2 is a section on an enlarged scale of the hinge parts shown in section in Fig. 2.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary View illustrating the details of construction.
A is the body of the case, and B is the lid. B" C are hinging elements connected toget-her in the usual manner andv containing a spring for causing the lid to fly open automatically when released.
Any ordinary form of catch may be used such as the co-operat-ing members D and E on the lid and body respectively for locking the latter together.
The hinging elements C are in one with a strip or so -called lid bearer C housed or bedded in a shallow recess along the hinging' edge of the body A, such recess being slightly longer than the length of the lid bearer so as to give a limited freedom of axial move-.
ment of the lid bearer along the saidedge as represented by the gap F.
Suitably housed or fixed inside the body A alongside its hinging edge is a longitudinally split tube G and slidably housed therein is a rod H connected by a web J to the lid bearer C, thesaid web extending from the rod H through the longitudinal slit in the tube G.
From the foregoing description it will be readily understood that the lid B, lid bearer C, hinging elements B O, web J and rod H can slide axially with respect to the body A and tube G- When the lid is closed upon the body such relative superficial movement of the lid and body looks or unlocks these parts depending upon the direction of move ment.
The above described arrangement and con-' struction of parts c'onstitute not only cheap and reliable means for the purpose in view but the concentric rod and tube serve to strengthen the'case in the region of its hinge owing to their being located'alongside the hinge.
Although I have described a preferred constructional embodiment I wish it to be understood that I do notlimit my invention precisely to such construction but regard various modifications having the same principle of construction and operation as with in the scope of my. invention. For example the aforesaid split tube might form part of or be secured to the web of the lid bearer and the rod be secured to the body of the case. Also instead of a single rod and a single split tube extending along substantially the whole length of the hinge the said rod and tube may consist of separate sections. In a further modification the rod and tube may be replaced'by two superposed strips rolled up on one another.
hat I claim and desire to secure'by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A cigarette case or like container comprising a body portion, a 11d portion, a strip hinged to one of sald port-1011s, rod-like members fitting concentrically the one Within the other with freedom of limited axial move ment, one of said members being connected to one of said portions, and a web portion connecting the other member to the said strip.
2. A cigarette case or like container comprising a body portion, a lid portion, a strip hinged along one of its sides to one edge of one of said portions, a longitudinally split tube secured to the adjacent edge of the other of said portions, a rod-like member slidably emb 'aced by said tube and a web 10 portion connecting said rod-like member with said strip, the aforesaid adjacent edge of the tube-carrying portion being recessed to present shoulders to limit relative axial movement between the tube-carrying por- 15 tion and the strip,
EDWARD CHARLES WEBB.
