UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TRYON EDWARDS, OF HAGERSTOWN, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEAD-RESTS FOR ACAR-SEATS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,455., dated August 10, 1875; application tiled November 3, 18732 To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, TRYoN EDWARDS, of Hagerstown, in the county of Washington and State of Maryland, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Head-Rests for Gar- Seats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention consists, mainly, in constructing the ordinary car-seat in such manner that a portion of it is adapted to slide upward to form a head-rest, aswill be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a front view ot' a car-seat having my improvement applied thereto, and Fig. 2 a partial transverse sectional view.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A represents a car-seat, which may be generally of any proper construction 5 but is provided, in addition, with the loose portion B, adapted to slide in either direction, so that it may be raised when the seat is turned either way. This portion is located in the center of each half of the seat, and is adapted to slide in any proper manner, tongue and grooves, as shown, being, however, preferred.
Any suitable means may be employed to increase the friction ot' the moving parts, it' such action is necessary.
It desired, the portion B may be divided on a horizontal line, and only a portion of it be moved, as shown in Fig. l.
It will be observed that the movable portion B is made a part of the seat-back proper, so that its face portion forms a part of the face ot' the back. By this means the headrest and seat-back always remain in the same plane, no matter Whether the portion B is raised or not, and consequently the supporting-surface is continuous and Without projection or recess.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A car-seat back provided with the loose portion B, having its face adapted to form a part of the face of the seat, and also capable ot' use upon either edge of the back, as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 8th day of October, A. D. 1873.
