Description

March 27, 1926, 1,664,316
I F. OWENS WI PER INVENTOR WITNESS: ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 27, 1928.
UNITE OFFICE.
FRED OWENS, OF MOUNT VERNON, KENTUCKY.
WIPER.
Application filed October 22, 1926, Serial No. 143,448. Renewed February 1, 1928.
oil is splashed against these rods so that it is necessary that the same be withdrawn, wiped and again reinserted in the opening in order that the quantity of the oil in the case may be accurately ascertained. The wiping of the rod is apt to soil the hand and clothing of the operator and a cloth is generally required for this purpose. It may,
therefore, be considered the object of this invention to provide a wiping device for this type of rods, which shall be of an extremely simple construction, cheaply constructed and conveniently positioned on the motor.
To the attainment of the above broadly recited objects, the improvement further resides in the construction, combination and operative association of parts, a satisfactory embodiment of which is disclosed by the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sufficient portion of an internal combustion engine to illustrate the application of my improvement thereon.
Figure 2 is a perspective view to illustrate the manner in which the improvement is used.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through the improvement.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the crank case of an internal combustion motor, the same being provided in the usual manner with an opening for the reception of a flat gauge rod 2. The rod has its outer 1 end formed with the usual handle 3.
In carrying out my invention I make use 'of a right-angle metal member. For dis extends from its outer end to a point adjacent the top flange 4. The edges of the flange 5 are of a greater Width than the flange 4 and these edges are bent inwardly, as at 6, for clamping engagement with the edges of wiper cloths 77. The free ends of the cloths extend through the mentioned opening 8in the flange 5.
The improvement may be readily attached to any convenient part of the engine casing, such for instance as disclosed by Figure l of the drawings. Figure 2 illustrates the manner in which the rod 2 is wiped by the improvement.
The simplicity of theconstruction and the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention relates when the foregoing description has been read in connection with the accompanying drawings, it
being, of course, understood that I do not wish to be restricted to the precise details herein set forth and hold myself entitled to such changes therefrom as fairly fall within the scope of what I claim.
Having described the invention, I claim A device for the purpose set forth comprising an angle member, one of Whose flanges is bifurcated for securing it to a support, the second flange having a central opening extending from the outer end thereof, the outer edges of the last mentioned flange being bent over the body thereof, wiper cloths secured to the body by said bent edges and the free ends of the wiper cloths extending into and passing through the mentioned opening in the member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FRED OWENS.
