This invention relates to improvements in weft detectors for weft replenishing looms wherein the detector is mounted on a regularly moving transterrer arm and it is the principal object of the invention to simplify the construction of the parts movable relatively to the transferrer arm to the end that they may be assembled as a unit and then mounted on the arm.
My previous Patent No. 1.372,316, show-s a transferrer arm which is given a regular downward movementon detecting beats of the loom to cooperate with the lilling in the shuttle under the magazine. A plunger slidably mounted with respect to the transterrer arm is normally held in retracted nonindicating position, but at the time of transfer is moved outwardly to cooperate on the upward stroke of the transferrer arm with a rocking indicating lever operatively connected to the magazine. In the various forms in which this general construction has been embodied the plunger has usually been supported directly by and mounted to slide on the transferrer arm, being retained by some form of latch or detent, the holding effect of which is overcome by a detector mounted on a lever pivoted on the transferrer arm. In such constructions it is usually necessary to adjust the various parts to. function properly after they have been assembled on the transferrer arm. It is an important object of my present. invention to mount the indicating plunger on the lever which supports the detector and to dispense with the latch or detent heretofore employed. In this way I am enabled to assemble all the operating parts of the device independent of the transferrer arm and then attach them directly to the arm at one point.
In detectorsof the type specied the part which does the detecting is lower than usual on the indicating .beat so as to require more time to be withdrawn Jfrom the shuttle than is the case on non-indicating detecting beats of the loom. It is a further object of my invention so to relate the parts that the coaction between the indicating plunger and the indicating lever on the replenishing mechanism will act to lift the detector away from the shuttle at the first part or" the upward stroke of the transfer-rer, in this way insuring proper and complete removal of the detector on detectingbeats to avoid interference with the iront wall of the shuttle as the lay moves rearwardly.
In my aforesaid patent the lever on which the detector is mounted cooperates with a yielding actuator supported independently of the transferrer arm and in the form of the invention shown in co-pending application Ser. No. 127,694, filed by Turner the yielding actuator is dispensed with and the energizing :torce necessary to give the detector its detecting movement is derived from the energy stored in the supporting lever when the transferrer arm comes to rest. The detector set forth herein may be actuated by either of these methods but I choose to illustrate the same inconnection with the latter 0r inertia actuated type.
lVith these and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, myy invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawings it will be seen that I have provided a transferrer arm 10 having a portion ll extending parallcl to the lay and located'above the shuttle box (not shown). Said portion 11 is provided with a heel 12 which engages the butt B of a bobbin W. By means of mechanism not shown but fully set forth in the aforesaid patent the portion 11 of the transferrer arm is moved downwardly toward the bobbin on alternate or detecting beats of the loom when the supply of weft is thereunder. An indicating lever 13 mounted to move about a pivot (not shown) rocks at the time of indication of weft exhaustion to initiate replenishment of the depleted shuttle.
In carrying my invention into effect I provide a supporting lever 2O having pivotally mounted at one ,end thereof as at 21 a weft detector 22 having a roughened detecting surface 23. LAn :indicating element shown as a plunger 24 has a head 25 which fits loosely through the bore 26 of the lever 20, and said plunger has a shoulder 27 against which presses a compression spring 28 the left end of which bears against a depending forked guide 29 formed as part of the lever 20. Said guide is shown more particularly in Fig. 4 as having a pair of walls 30 spaced to define a slot 3l through which extends the left and flattened end 32 of the plunger. Said end 32 is further provided with a notch 33 to cooperate with a retaining plate 34 held to the walls 30 by means of screws 35.
The lever 20 is pivoted on a pin 36 secured to the transferrer arm and extending through a vertical slot 37 in which the lever moves. A tension spring 38 extends between a horn 39 on the detector and an upstanding finger 40 on the transferrer arm and. serves normally to hold the parts in the position shown in Fig. V3 with respect to the transferrer arm.
The detector has a locking arm 41 adapted for cooperation with the tip 42 of end 32 and said detector is further provided with a tripping knee 43 so placed as toengage the underside of the plunger end 32 along a preferably inclined surface 44 at the time of indication of weft exhaustion. lThe spring 38 normally holds the lever 20 against the bottom of finger 40 to position said lever and parts carried thereby.
In operation the notch 33 is held by the plate 34 as indicated in Fig. 1, the head 25 in this position being out of the path of the cam lever 13 and the spring 38 holding the detecting surface 23 in proper position lby engagement of the left end of the locking arm 41 with the tip 42 of the plunger.
'Asthe transferrer arm arrives at its lowern ever, as shown in Fig. 2, the teeth 23 will be unrestrained and will move to the right, the knee 43 of the detector engaging the lower inclined surface 44 of the plunger end 32 to raise the notch 33 above retaining plate 34. Spring 28 will immediately act to move the plunger to the position shown in Fig. 2, cotter pin 45 limiting such movement by contact with a portion. of the lever 20. It will be seen that when the detector moves to the position shown in Fig. 2 the locking arm 4l moves from plunger locking position and permits the adjacent end of the plunger to move upwardly to be released.
As soon as the parts assume the position shown in Fig. 2 the transferrer arm will move upwardly and the extended head 25 will engage the cam lever 13 to rock the same in the manner set forth in the aforesaid patent. Because of the fact that the plunger moves 'pivotally about pin 36 the vfirst contact of the plunger with the indicating lever will serve to raise the supporting levery 2O and detector from the position shown in Fig. 2. to that shown in Fig. 3, causing said detector to rise quickly out of the path of the parts moving rearwardly with the lay. As the transferrer arm continues its upward movement the head 25 will engage an inclined surface 46 on the :indicating lever 13 to `move the plunger to the left until notch 33 lies over the left hand end of the retaining plate 34, at which time spring 38 acting through the locking arm 41 of the detector will depress the head 32 so as to insure holding engagement between the notch and the plate. Spring 38 and arm 41 will there.
after constitute a yielding lock to prevent accidental upward movement of the plunger.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a detector for a loom transferrer arm wherein the detecting element and the indicating plunger are both mounted on a lever which has a single fixed point of connection with the transferrer arm, thereby permitting the assembly of these devices away from the transferrer arm with resultant manufacturing advantages. It will further be seen that the first action of the indicating lever 13 is to raise the detector 22 so that the same will be out of the shuttle, thus preventing improper contact between the front wall of the shuttle and any part of the detecting mechanism. Furthermore, it will be seen that the single spring which serves to raise the supporting lever acts also to lock the plunger in retracted position, thus preventing accidental indication of weft exhaustion, this result being achieved without the use of a latch or other movable device directly connected to the transferrer arm. Also, the single spring serves to return the detector and supporting lever therefor to normal position, as has been the case in previous motions of this type and furthermore serves to lock the plunger yieldingly against accidental release.
Having thus described my invention it will be apparent that changes and modifications may be made therein bythose skilled in the art Without departing from thefspirit and scope of the invention, an'dYI do not Wish toy be limited to the detailsherein disclosed, but what I claim is:
